Upfitter Wiring Harness Discussion

Thanks. That is one of the several videos I've previously watched that shows how to pop the box off the bracket so you can twist the box to access the upfitter pigtails while it's still in the truck. But @Mad_Max said there is a video to completely remove the box from the truck so you can do all the crimping on your workbench rather than under the hood. Curious to see what is involved in completely removing the box from under the hood to decide if that is worth it so one can do all the crimping on the bench rather than hunched under the hood.

To completely remove the box, first you need to unclip the upfitter fuse box, remove the cover on the passenger side battery terminal, you will see the positive cable from the upfitter fuse box connecting to the battery junction box , remove the positive lead, next you will see a connector that connects the upfitter fuse box to the factory harness, unclip that and the whole upfitter fuse box can be removed. At least that is how it was on my 22.

Thanks. Simple enough. Didn't realize there were so few cables/connections to the upfitter fuse box, but that makes sense since it's a blank canvas at this point. I'll plan to fully remove it. The few extra steps are worth it, to me, so I don't have to hunch over to work under the hood. That just leads to an achy back and makes me more likely to rush through it where on the bench, I can be methodical and meticulous.
I'll save this project and do along with some other cabling work I have (replacing existing camper DC charge cables with larger gauge and making it triggering with upfitter switch, adding solenoid for the 2Lo mod, etc.).

Took a pic for those comparing different year pickups. For '23/'24 (this is a 7.3L), looks like the HCBJB (High Current Battery Junction Box) has been combined with the fuse box/junction box. The main battery is turned sideways instead of front to back. The HCBJB is no longer on the side of the battery (closer to the engine). It is now within the gray fuse box behind the battery (closer to the fire wall). Will still be easy to remove the nut and pull the entire upfitter box completely out of the engine bay, though. For another time, but wanted to share the image of my '24 7.3L compared to the earlier years others have shown.

Happy New Year - on my 2024 removed the battery to gain access to the HCBJB also labled the connections as the cable routing obstructed the removal of the upfitter fuse box, also to gain access to factory ground location

Hey guys - apologies I was away for a few days and didn't get a chance to reply. Yes this is the vid that I saw on how to remove the upfitter assembly. It was well worth the effort as it made installing the harness much easier.

This is the way to go! I am going to use the method when I add my harness this summer. I am excited to clean it up under there - right now it's great - but not "factory" looking.

Sounds good.

Why ford made it difficult to reach when it really should not be is beyond me.

As an engineer myself, it seems odd how Ford did this. I would have liked to see a simple weather sealed box with a termination block where you could have landed both + and - of the upfitter accessory and screwed the wires down.

just an update after installing and setting up the lights we've had a fairly mild winter only a couple weeks in the 20's light snow and some rain - this setup has been perfect no fuss muss or bother - it's a great product
