📍 Meet-Up Sedona, AZ meet-up - September 12 - 13, 2025

This reminded me of the time we showed up to a 5-acre parcel in the northern upscale part of Scottsdale. If you're familiar with the Phoenix greater area, you know where I'm talking about.

Naturally, once people see us set up our equipment and break out our surveying gear, they flock over to us to find out just how much land we're stealing, what impacts we're doing to the land, airports and sewer treament plants we're building or how much disturbance we're going to create - because of course, that's what people who measure land do.

Sure enough, out comes the neighbor, who's residence was about 660+ feet away, marching over to us to find out in great level of detail, as if he were part of the approval committee, to find out just what all was going on in his "neck of the woods."

At this point, I already know where this is going so I just play stupid for the most part, and I can't spill any real details even if I wanted to.

Before heading back to his sprawling 8,500-square-foot estate, he made sure to tell me he would be speaking with both the property owner and the city development department to ensure we minimized any damage to the natural desert landscape. He emphasized that he had spent over 25 years preserving the area in its pristine state. According to him, allowing someone to move in and start building would disrupt the natural washes and creeks crossing the parcel.

He even assured me he knew exactly how many trees were in the area, because apparently, tree is what makes the land “prestigous.” Meanwhile, the irony of his estate’s footprint never once crossed his mind. It’s fine for him to carve out his kingdom, but heaven forbid anyone else tries to develop their own little piece of heaven.

Moral of the story: Sometimes humans move into a habitat, complain about its natural quirks, and then act like very landscape they disrupted owes them an apology. Meanwhile nature just has to deal with us being, well humans.

Working to get some key things locked in, specifically restaurant reservations for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. @AZsurveyor has identified some great places for us to eat at, but advises that it is also peak season in Sedona and the best places to eat will fill-up quickly.

Here's what I've got so far in terms of who is arriving when:

I'll assume that everyone is traveling with a plus 1 for dinner reservations, so just let me know if you'll be solo or if you'll have more people with you (e.g., children so we can pick a place that has kid friendly food or isn't a bar/pub). For example, I'm currently estimating at least 16 people for dinner Thursday night.

Based on the current poll results, it looks like about half the group wants to take the main route while the other half wants to take the more technical route. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be working to build the routes into onX Offroad and will share the links to those routes for review.

That's awesome that you're going to make it. Kids are definitely welcome. My buddy is likely to bring is 1 and 3 year old daughters. I say likely as there's a small chance they might stay with grandma for the weekend.

My 2 girls are 3 and 8 months. We will be driving up from the Phx area. My parents are in prescott so I am sure I will have to see them on the way up or down.

I've been trying to sort out details on each route for each day and for day 2, it looks like the original details I provided in the itinerary were a bit off. We can continue to plan on starting our tour from the east, driving up I-17 and exiting FR 226 / Schnebly Hill Road. From there, we can take Schnebly Hill Road back to Sedona (highlighted in yellow). Along the way (highlighted in orange) is the Volcanic Rim Loop (aka Rock Garden Loop on onX Offroad) which starts/ends on Schnebly Hill Road.

I am struggling to find great descriptions on this loop and can't find any videos of the drive. It is described as more difficult than Schnebly Hill Road, but a 4/10 technical rating on onX doesn't raise any red flags for me (but I'll happily defer to those who have more knowledge on these things than I). For those who don't want to do the loop, I suggest they continue on to Merry Go Round Rock and we'd make that our lunch stop, and they can have an extended lunch while the rest of the group catches up to them.

Once everyone is fed and ready to go, we'll continue back on Schnebly Hills Road to Sedona (and maybe directly to our dinner location depending on timing).
