Issue w/ Sync3 Bluetooth/CarPlay calls: microphone volume

Remarkably, my phone works just fine when I hold it to my ear to talk. Did the same thing in my prior truck, believe it or not. I must have gotten one of the good ones.
I've nearly been killed on my bike while commuting more times than I can count by folks with a phone in there hand while driving. Unless it's a dire emergency the phone needs to be put away while driving.

If we're just referring to talking on the phone, then you'd have to go out on a pretty long limb to make the argument that holding a phone to your ear to talk is somehow more distracting than talking to air via the truck's speakerphone. The infotainment systems in modern cars are many, many times more distracting than either of those activities.

No argument from me on texting while driving. That's basically like a drunk driver.

I rolled a truck back in the day texting, so I learned the hard way. I will say the "hands free" options are somewhat distracting for moments. The biggest distraction is trying to disable the bluetooth when the speaker system does not work properly.

I was experiencing same issue. People can't hear me when i call them while connected to CarPlay. Went to microphone settings on iPhone, turned off microphone to all apps, rebooted phone and now it seems to have eliminated the problem.
I tried this, and it didn’t make any difference for me. Would you mind letting me know if you simply turn the microphone off to each app and then restarted your phone or if you did some type of reset to your phone? I turn the power off and back on but I didn’t try to reset the phone.

I drove a new loaner F-150 while my windshield recall was being dealt with and used wireless CarPlay in the Sync 4 system. It was awesome, sounded great, people could hear me very well and system response was far faster than what’s in my Tremor.

Unfortunately other forums are reporting some experiencing the same issues with Sync4.

I happened to buy a new iPhone recently and that resolved almost all issues for me. (Only problem I have is Siri disconnecting when using wireless CarPlay, but works wired.)

It seems very likely to me that there’s a CarPlay compatibility bug Ford introduced in a 3.3 build that is persisting in all future builds.

I’m hoping it can be solved for on the Apple side.

I solved some of the XM stations jumping around but the phone quality with echo and low volume still seem to persist. The other day the XM channels froze so I couldn’t switch them forward or back - but it fixed itself after shutdown and hasn’t done it again. I’m running latest software too.

The iOS 15 CarPlay Beta 1 was released this week. If you’re someone experiencing this issue I would encourage you to try the beta to see if there are any improvements.

Yes, I have this same issue. Everything works spot on except the mic volume level exclusively when using CarPlay. There are other forums about this issue. After doing some research, it appears that certain Sync3 builds have a software glitch that causes this problem. Some people have had success with downgrading their Sync3 build to an earlier build that is known to work correctly with CarPlay. I called Ford Customer Service and they told me they had hear of the issue and they suggested I don't use CarPlay for phone calls. Thanks A LOT!!!! I don't really want to downgrade my Sync3 but the only other choices are to disconnect CarPlay for phone calls until they release a new update for Sync3. That could be a year from now and even then we don't know if it will fix this specific flaw. My truck has Sync3 Version 3.4 Build 20196. I've read that Build 19101 works correctly with CarPlay. There is a Ford Ranger forum that talks about how to downgrade. I haven't tried. View attachment 13649
This also seems to tie into the topic of radio issues where there is a Sync 3 updater to version 3.4.21098

Looks like this is not applicable to 2020 or newer systems. In the video, and the docs, they state that you can brick the Sync if the vehicle is 2020 or newer:
