Winch Install!

Mine is getting installed today at the Dealership! :cool: :cool:

Photos to follow. 2020 picked up last year in April. They had a Winch in stock in Chicago so I had the parts guy order it out. Using my Ford Points towards the install.

I was going to do my own install but my back said "no thanks". This is actually the first one for my dealership. so I am the learning curve. Hopefully will work out well. My salesman did a bunch of research and got it to the service writer who did the same. It's nice that they spend some time on it for me.
 
Great idea on the FORD points call. I ordered mine with it factory.(wife's idea)
after we got stuck in Moab sand/quicksand
 
Can anyone confirm if I would need dual battery or to replace the alternator? If so, what that would cost? (it is possible to install a second battery and/or replacement of the alternator)

Does it need it? That I can’t confirm, howeve you CANNOT build this on Fords website without the 397 alternator. It automatically changes your alternator to this. Of course I have only built this for the Diesel engine which already has a dual battery setup.

I would go in and build a gasser on the configurator and select the winch and see if it prompts you to change it to dual battery option and the 397 alternator. Then you’ll know what is required.

I am in the same situation. I purchased off dealer lot and it didn't come with dual battery/alternator option. I checked with the parts manager at my dealer and he said that option is absolutely required. I asked him to get me the parts to install the option. After 2 weeks of calls to him he couldn't figure out all the parts that were needed and then said the dealership is unable to do this. He contacted his Ford rep and he told me they are also unable to help. He said if I tried doing this myself it would void my warranty. I then called Ford Performance tech line who said they can not help, I have to have a dealer do this. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Ahh the famous it will void your warranty. Which translates to we are to lazy to help and dont want to deal with you. There is absolutly no reason why you cannot get the parts needed to add the winch. Find a different dealer.
 
Add me to the list that would like a winch but only has a single battery. Ford service manager told me there isnt a dual battery kit add-on FORD kit available. Sounds like a lost cause. I know the extra battery isnt necessary for a winch (just keep vehicle running), but id rather have all Ford parts in my truck - like it was born with it. There is a kit for the 6.2 so perhaps something will become available soon.
 
Also, as Im waited to hear back from my dealer to see if adding the dual battery is even possible/available from Ford, he tells me for them to provide and install the winch is 5600? That seems kind of high to me. 3000k retail from Ford performance, about 1/2 day’s labor. What say you???

The Factory kit is slick, you can add a winch if want to go another route

I did a killer winch set up in my Jeep Wranger Rubicon. Had to get a bumper, mount plate, fair lead and wire kit. And the Winch itself. It was not cheap but was much less than Ford Performance. I Probably have 3k in mine with the bumper and all the mount kits. My own labor. Bumper is high end.

You can do the same with your Tremor or even F250/350, You don't need the dual battery set either. Just be smart how you use the winch. Mind your amp draw. You also don't need the biggest winch you can find. I did not get mine to recover my Tremor but to do other things. ( Dropping trees, small tractors, atvs type stuff) 9,000 lb winch draws less power, may not pull a Tremor out of the swamp but will do a ton of work, There are many sizes out there and cable / rope options.
The same BS from the dealership with snow plows. they won't get them installed for you unless you have there "package". If you take your truck directly to Western, Meyer, Boss or who ever they will no doubt sell and install a plow for you even if you don't have the dual battery or snow plow prep package.

What is great about the Ford set up is the nice hidden set up and it works with Adaptive cruise and its crashed tested. There is no adaptive cruise on my Jeep and certainly don't want to crash it.

I tried the impact but the bolts in behind the fairlead turned anyway. ?

Ford has published *corrected* installation instructions for the Winch to avoid the issue where the bolts snagged the winch line.

This is a major safety issue - definitely make sure your dealer is familiar with this new PDF prior to performing your winch install.

I can’t slide the license plate frame under the winch and between the bumper. Does my winch sit closer to the bumper than yours? I read your prior post again. I think you moved the fairlead forward and slid the license plate holder between the fairlead and the winch frame? Do the bottom clips on your license plate holder snap and hold into the slots under the bumper? Or, can they easily slid out?

I haven’t tried this yet. So dumb question... how tight do the fairlead bolts need to be? If we have to rely on finger friction to reinstall I was worried it would be too loose.
