Whipple Installed!

Got my new tune and the truck is finally all done and running great!!!
Your SD card might not be seated properly? I got the same message when I forgot to put the SD card in mine. Also, are you sure theres only ONE .BIN file on the tomahawk?
try reflashing the Whipple tune.
Closing the loop on my Ambient Air Temp issue since it is now fixed.

As I mentioned my truck was running fine when I took it in to have the passenger side mirror fixed due to a slow and intermittent folding mirror motor. (The passenger window stops (they're electronic) were also having problems and the window would not go all the way up or down automatically.) The mirror was fixed and the dealer updated all the software on the truck. When I got it back the outside air temp on the dash showed as high as 167 degrees. I'm still here so we know it was wrong.

Back to the dealer it went and they discussed it with Whipple. Whipple said it was wired right. The dealer gave the truck back to me and noted that Ford required the truck to be reflashed due to the mirror fix and they did not know the problem as all was correct except the wire that was cut per the instructions.

I think several of us have experienced the problems with a bad AAT reading. It is more than annoying with things completely unrelated to the engine not working right. I was also getting various P0300 codes at wide open throttle and some stalling issues.

I took the issue to Whipple and they noted my software was all messed up. It was running the latest and greatest stock Ford software. It appears that Ford overwrote everything. Whipple sent me a new tune and it would not load. Whipple gave it a second shot and the truck reflashed and all is good, even the window is working correctly now. These trucks or interconnected more than I would have thought. All the power is back and the only thing I did not check to see is if the latest tune is still not speed limited (5 Star claims it is) as I didn't want to drive out to a place where I would have enough room to test that. It is shifting fine but I want to drive it a few days before I give a final verdict on shifting. This is my third version of the tune. It feels better but I need to drive it more to confirm.

Thats crazy it was running on the stock tune!

Yep - that was why I suggested reflashing it, that’s exactly what I thought!

The stock tune also references the new sensor and hacked wire and is reading temp from inside the blower, if you’re wondering what happened.

The Whipple tune changes that parameter.

The injector duty cycle must be vastly different?
The Whipple injectors aren’t a lot bigger than stock, and then the tune applies trim pretty fast (STFT / LTFT). They are balanced by the bigger ROVAL TB, if that makes sense.

After reading about the new map, I emailed Whipple asking if I could get the map update. They emailed back quickly and said that in May, there was a new update, but it requires a new manifold air temperature sensor and harness, part #116500. If I didn't have that one, they'd send it to me. I installed mine back in April, and sure enough, the tag on my harness is the new one, so I was able to reflash my truck with the updated map. For those with an older than May 25 install, you probably need this new harness and update.

Can you elaborate or was there a previous post about the new MAP

I have been corresponding with 5 Star Tuning about tunes for the Whipple. This is what they wrote this morning.

"Yes we just had one on the dyno so they should be good to go. Whipple updated their tune so the power is about the same but there won't be a speed limiter and the shifting is way better. We did not get any misfire codes either. If you do not have headers I would suggest a set. We have to limit it when you have stock cats on it."

If the Whipple tune has a speed limiter. I never found it and know it will run to at least 115 MPH on the Whipple tune. What 5 Start notes about the cats corresponds to what Whipple notes about the cats, that they are the limiting factor to not getting more power.

Unless you're changing other parts, I'm not sure the money is worth it for the 5 Start tune with a Whipple. I think quicker shifting would be better but I'm holding judgement for now. Whipple sent me the new tune yesterday but it would not load for some reason. After the Tomahawk updated I got this message. “The programing functions are not available.” Whipple is looking into it now.

I think this is misunderstood, the cat cooling maxes out the small injectors that Whipple provides, limiting the ability to make power and cool the cats.

Correct me if I’m wrong please, but it’s the injectors that limit power 100%

5 star turns up the tune with bigger injectors OR no cats, (with much lower fuel demand without cat cooling).

As both items are expensive, but catless headers (or delete pipes) aid flow AND. Solve the fueling, so likely a better value if noise isn’t an issue,

Looking back it looks like post 435 mentioned a new map which got me emailing Whipple. Whipple said in their email to me that there was a new map in May and based on my info, I didn't have that map but the map does require the new part 116500.

First tow, ouchies

75 mph, Hilly, 11k+ lbs

That’s in the ballpark of what I saw, almost 12k - tall bumper pull toy hauler.

I bought a boost gauge to keep an eye on things…

When Whipple finalized my install in March. They told me the only new part was this wiring harness and this was the final configuration they were shipping. They did not note changing the sensor. The referenced post is mine and I do not recall mentioning a new MAP sensor. I'm curious what you get.

With regard to the comments on the cats with Whipple, they mentioned that changing the exhaust did nothing for the kit without tuning. This was at the time when no one had access to tune the '23 and later trucks other than Whipple and Ford was involved in every step. This is discussed earlier in this thread and the conversations were over a year ago. They noted that there was no reason to do a cat back exhaust other than to make more noise. The manifolds and cats were the limiting factor. We did not go into the exact details as CARB compliance is a must for me here is the Peoples Republic of CA and a manifold and cat swap for long tube headers and high flow cats is a no no. I didn't ask. Is it flow? Cooling? I don't know but now you have me curious.

The 5 Star comment I shared is a direct cut and paste of what they wrote and matches what Whipple told me. The cats need to go to get more power out of the kit. I do not know the exact reason. I will question 5 Star on one point. They claim that the Whipple tune is speed limited. I had the opportunity and the space to run the tune Whipple gave me last week all out yesterday. The speedo showed 100 and it kept accelerating for a few hundred RPM after that before I let off. If it is limited it is definitely at a point higher than stock. (Separately, Whipple has not fixed the tendency for cruse control to not downshift on long steep grades causing the engine to lug and the truck to slow down unless you give a quick push on the accelerator.)

Going back to the Whipple conversations, I got that Whipple's goal with this kit was for a stock Super Duty to be 50 state legal and to improve what a Super Duty does, tow haul and work. Having run it longer than anyone else on a '23 and later truck now I think they nailed it. Now that 5 Star (and others) have access to tune them I look forward to hearing about how parts are changed and they're tuned to be even be even better. Unfortunately I'll need to wait for the Trump administration to win its battle with California before participating in such shenanigans.

In your second picture, look at the part number on that white tag. Should read 116500. My parts list had another number but they had sent me the newer harness 116500. Tech support said in the email that I couldn't run their latest map if I had the old sensor harness which I never had so I was good to run the new map.

One problem I have is when I emailed 5 start about a tune this was their response:

Hello, I have used 5 Star twice before on ecoboosts so I am familiar with you guys. I still have an HP Tuners Ngauge, but I think those aren't supported anymore? I now have a 2023 Superduty and just installed a Whipple Gen 6 supercharger. The Whipple calibration is very lazy and only comes alive at WOT. I am hoping to get a better tune that is more aggressive and changes the trans tune. (I don't think Whipple has a trans tune at all?) My truck goes to 6th gear at 30 mph up my steep dirt road. I wanted to see what you guys recommend, I am not familiar with the MPIV3 or the RTD+ and the whole credits thing. Also wanted to make sure you can do the Whipple? The 23+ have a weird thing where you tap into the AAT sensor wire on the PCM.

Their response:

Hey Xrocket21 yes we can tune your truck with the whipple. And using the rtd is easy. It's all done on an app on your smartphone. No tapping into wires, it will be tuned through the obd port. When you buy the device and tunes from us it will include the credits you need. My direct line is xxxxxxx give me a call and i can tell you more about it and place your order over the phone.

This has me worried because getting the sensor, getting the wire tapped, having the wrong old tune and the AAT issue, then getting the right tune to fix the AAT and properly use the tapped in wire with Whipple was a process.

5 star says no tapping into wires, so then does that mean I unhook the yellow wire? will my AAT be screwed up again? Just worries me they didnt know about this setup from whipple, sounds like they are only familiar with the old setup without the y-harness?

I need to just call them, but I haven't had time. And at this point not SUPER excited at throwing more money at this to get it how I want it.
