Follow up on dash mount for those interested…

As previously stated I only have it for once I leave pavement and hit dirt looking for campsites or OnX pins. Super easy to pop in and out. Works exactly as I needed it. No more bouncing around. Visibility is affected and probably wouldn’t use it like this on the highway. I also don’t notice any reflection from the antenna. Pictures seem to pick it up way more.

One thing I need to work on is reliably connecting to it. CarPlay always wants to connect wirelessly then I have to fiddle with disconnecting, then using a wired connection.

I like this set-up. I have been flirting with adding something like this, but I was originally thinking the rear sunroof panel - this may be simpler. I likely would be stopped on the highway for the visibility thing, as you mentioned.

It’s definitely obvious, and a bored Barney could use it as a reason to stop ya. If I had a moonroof I would have gone that direction to be more discreet.

If you’re on a higher bandwidth plan, the satellite position will begin to matter more, but still less than you’d think. I use the 50mbps plan and can easily saturate it when flat against the moonroof glass. My buddy runs a mini on the dash of his jet and can saturate the 50mbps plan at 500+ mph in the flight levels.

Orientation isn’t critical.

It will still work flat but orientation matters...another reason I still use gen 2

Update : I got some mounts and accessories heading to the residence. Damn Aussies got some good stuff for SL, so shipping time is added. Good thing the express shipping wasn't any significant increase. My biggest mounting issue(s) was my GMRS antenna mount as I have it now over the 3rd Brake light. For now I'll be trying the SL (Mini/Gen 4) on a truck rack bar mount first. With the power cables I'll feed off the Up-fitters. Gen 4 final power solution might be a POE convertor, while still using the up-fitter to fed the power convertor.

Did StarLink mini things today...toured some property with my FiL that's in a signal deadzone. SL-M provided much needed support between wifi calling, updating of maps and so forth.

Just for fun, non scientific test.

StarLink on my roof sitting flat. StarLink to Satellite connection.

100' away from the truck I am getting -78dBm. You can just get connection at this level. -60 or less is a good connection. Placed the Mini Router hooked up to a power bank and went another 100'

200' out I and still able to get internet but the level is still in the -70's dBm. I bet I could improve the signal if the Mini Router was higher in the air.

Internet to iPhone through the Mini Router at 200'. I was hoping for more distance and like I said I think if the router was higher or my dish was lower maybe I could get more range.

Mini Router pulls 7 watts the entire time, even when running a speed test.

Side notes:
The iPhone wifi bars are not accurate when compared to the StarLink dBm meter. I would have zero connection (-80 plus) and it would still show full bars. I also had better signal when I stood looking away from the router or dish? It seems the test I did in my house the walls really didn't make much of a difference vs the line of site outside. The distance seems to be the killer. I could not log on to my home network at 100' I set my truck to log onto the StarLink and it logs on immediately, but never want to login to my home network. I wish the app worked with CarPlay, that would be super cool. They need to make solar generator, 12v fridge, wireless controlled rock light and what ever apps work in CarPlay. That would be so convenient.

Not sad for $40.00 and I don't think I would be camped more than 100' from the truck so it would make the campsite have a good signal if I didn't want to take the dish down and move it closer to us.

I had positive experience running it off 12v plug. Some people reported issues but I didn't notice anything detrimental.
