Check out this post if you’re experiencing suction on the DEF cap.

I had a bit of a suction issue on my cap initially, but haven’t had any since it was looked at.
I read the post, my issue is that this should have been checked BEFORE shipping!! These caps weren't cheap.
I feel this is the responsibility of the vender selling a defective or pour designed part that is now gong to cost me probably about a $1000.00 . Out of my POCKET! Sorry to be blunt but this should be payed by the seller of the cap. Since the cap is the direct cause of the damage! I could have been on a trip loaded when it would finally totally screwed up my def and would be a even bigger cost!
I guess we or I will find out what kinda stand guy people claim that he is. My concern is if this has happened to me I bet if others look at their def tank they if find the damage tooo. Would like an d response from BroncOH??

What is the indicator here that vacuum is taking place? Is it a sound/feel when removing the cap?

Curious if running the def tank low creates more vacuum effect. I need to check my tank now, but I’ve never noticed a vacuum when removing the def cap… I would assume I would hear a hiss or something. My def tank never drops below 50% before I top it off

Mine is rarely below half too. You can here the air suck in when removing rhe cap.

Didn’t mean to come off as invalidating your concerns; it is for sure concerning. I’m going to for sure check mine given your post.

Just wanted to pull that post up from the depths of this post since it was being discussed.

Not sure about the amount of suction being related to how empty. Logically, it would make sense, more you suck out the more vacuum on the tank. However, to me, it didn’t seem to be any different in loudness or suction between a half tank or almost empty.

@thatdood I experienced the same suck of air with my cap before it was looked at. Haven’t experienced it since.

Been busy away from the forum transitioning over to FoMoCo.

There's an internal passageway that allows the tank to be at ambient pressure. If any unsintered Nylon blocks this passage, this could allow a buildup of vacuum. This passage can be opened up with a 3/32" drill (depth 29mm from the outside) until you feel the resistance of the drill break through. Normally the passage is obscured through the zip-tie cross hole, which is only used for shipping purposes. Use compressed air to blow anything free.

Sorry to be obtuse with this question…

I’ve had my caps since the initial or second release (April 2024). I’ve never noticed an issue until my current trip, towing our TT. Filled my def before leaving western Colorado, drove 2200 miles to central Florida and my def gauge still shows as full. Removed the cap and there was a huge vacuum release. My def tank is not deformed…

Looking through the zip tie hole with a flashlight, there is no opening/shaft at all. Should I be able to see an opening? Should I just drill a hole to be safe?

How’s everyone checking the tank? If I’m looking at the correct place, only a portion of it is exposed due to either skid plates or frame/component's blocking visual access of all sides

I got under the truck…I can see most of the tank. I’m assuming deformity would be fairly easy to see.

My understanding is that the hole from the zip tie opening to the “top” of the cap should be there. Mine is really hard to see. Light has to be just right to catch the barest hint of it.

Someone earlier had mentioned to blow through it after drilling to test for pressure. I’m not sure the validity of that, but after removing the key and “locking” the cap, I was able plug one end of the zip tie line with my finger and blow through the other (after cleaning it, obviously) with no build up of pressure.

Hopefully someone that’s done the drill through can chime in for you. I haven’t done it myself.

Thanks. Here’s a photo of the interior of my zip tie hole…the surface looks to be completely unbroken by any type of vent hole.

Mine looks exactly like that. And I’ve had no pressure releasing to my knowledge or memory, which could be challenged, I suppose!

Apologies for not knowing how to link directly to a post, but the above is from Post #874 on page 44 of this very thread.

It served as the “instructions” when I found that I needed to drill my DEF cap. Drilling the cap was super easy, in simply used a tooth pick and compressed air to clean it out after drilling.

I’m still super pleased with the products I have on my truck from @BroncOh and having to drill my DEF cap didn’t seem like a big deal.

All this talk about DEF reminds me it would probably be best to remove my tank for a proper examination to ensure it’s not deformed. I hear once they’re removed it’s really tough to put them back on 🤣

Any chance there was a product update/redesign or tooling at some point? I don’t think I’ve experienced this but haven’t really paid attention. My caps are made of a white material and I see pics here of a black material used 🤷🏻‍♂️

I checked my DEF cap last night and it wasn’t drilled. Very little (if any) vacuum when I removed the cap, but I haven’t driven the truck since last weekend. I drilled it per the drawing and now it vents. From what I can see of the DEF tank, it looks a feels normal.

I’ve got the white as well. The vacuum is obvious as soon as the seal is broken. Actually have to pull the cap a little to break the vacuum. Then it sounds like I’m disconnecting the hose from an air compressor.

So what is the consensus on drilling the cap? I’ve got a decent amount of vacuum when I take the cap off.

I’d ask BroncOh (not tagging him) myself but he’s got higher priorities (as some of us know).

@mattagc , did you drill yours?
I haven't drilled mine. My cap originally had a bit of a vacuum, a small hiss whenever I opened it. BroncOh then helped me out with an unrelated repair to the cap, and when I got it back, the suction was gone.

Not sure about a redesign, mine was always white. I want to say it had more fingers on it when I got it back, but I can't for the life of me find a photo of the cap right out of the box when I first got it.

Drill it! Just take it slow. It will be obvious when you’ve gone far enough. Clean it out and put it back on the truck. Nothing to worry about going forward.

Mine had no hole to vent i used the diagram and drilled one. To everyone that hs these caps and does not have a vent hole this is what happens. I replaced my tank today it took me a few hours. I included pictures of the old tank beside the new one. If yiu have to replace your send me a message I can help guide you through it. The new tank came with pump and heater installed. They retail from the dealer for $570 + taxes Canadian I was fortunate to get a deal on it from where I purchased the truck.

Still not sure how someone can see the full tank crawling underneath the truck… it seems I can only see a small portion of the tank to check

You can't see the top but it is possible to see the sides. You can see how bad it was ontop, I couldn't see that until to pulled it out . The one side that was bad was the side next to the fuel tank.
