7.3 to lose 40 LB FT of TQ and 10 HP for 2027

"Now, GM has indeed confirmed that the Megamax - code-named Mongoose - is real, which it did via a short teaser video seen below. As expected, it's squarely aimed at Ford's turbocharged 6.7L V8 Power Stroke diesel, which currently pumps out 500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque, while the existing 6.6L Duramax is good for 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet. In fact, GM specifically references the scorpion in the clip, which is Ford's code name for that oil burner."

I can't believe they called out the Scorpion like that. I hope Ford has something in the back pocket.

Taking the correct road to the new emission standards, dropping boost and increasing displacement. There is no great evidence I have found that Ford is working on any new powertrain.

When the 6.7 and later 7.3 was being developed there were a lot of leaks on SVTPerformance. I haven’t seen any solid leaks so unfortunately I don’t think Ford has a real answer in the works. There was a decent amount of leaks on this new 8.3 on the GM boards, we knew it was coming for a while now.

We really need a Gen II 7.3 as well, the 40 LB FT cut is not acceptable if you see the leaks on the L8S coming. The 7.3 is going to be 100+ LB FT shy of the competition. The super duty team is asleep at the wheel.

It's clear the competitors are aiming for Ford. When you are at the top, that is expected. And I too hope they (Ford) have something brewing to counter with. Giving up best in class Gas and Diesel is not a good move for marketability. I understand the ones that say it doesn't matter- but in a consumer driven market it absolutely does. "Derating the Godzilla" news has totally taken over my YouTube accounts. We can debate it on a forum until we are blue in the face whether it was really a derate. To take your class leading big gas engine and then advertise it LOWER than your competitors is really questionable. On the diesel front, the Duramax has always swung above its numbers in terms of performance. Now they aren't talking about a mild performance bump. They are going after the marketing which, I hope, Ford is armed and ready. Consumers drive sales. And many of us will buy Ford anyway because we feel they are the best. But there are hordes of buyers that buy because of marketing and the "newest shiny thing" that is advertised aggressively. Some may remember Ford commercials in the 80's. They had videos of a Ford truck with a Chevy across the bed and a Dodge hooked to the hitch and drug them both up a rock mountain. THATS what I secretly wish Ford would do today. I bleed blue and hate seeing them not only lose the gas engine crown (I have a 22 Tremor 7.3) but potentially also the diesel crown. Ive seen the speculatory videos of the 8.0 Powerstroke and the internal testing that has supposedly crested 600HP and 1600lbft- I don't recall the exact numbers, but thereabouts. The last one I saw (TK's garage) was an inside leak that indicated they are good on engine but trying to get a transmission to hold it. I am trying to remain confident Ford has the fight to stay aggressive.

Where the hell is anyone going to use 1,600 ft/lbs? Seriously.

I am blown away by what my truck does at full boost. The 6.7 HO is underrated by Ford. It consitently lays down more HP at the wheels than it is claimed to make at the crank, and destroys anything that GM or Cummins has offered to date.

GM BETTER do something, and it BETTER not be a failure.... or they are FINISHED.

Red Scorpion is King, until the MegaMaxi proves they can build a crankshaft that can actually handle 1,000+lb/ft. Which they have been doing a shitty job of lately. That whole keeping the crankshaft in a single piece has been an issue. Likely due to their retarded firing order. is THAT fixed in the new engine?

I know they kept the retarded lifter based cylinder deactivation system on the new gas pigs. Why not keep hammering the front crank leg with both cylinders at the same time in the diesel... What could possibly (continue to) go wrong??

I guess I'm finally old enough to say this an arms race I'm happy to sit out, crack a beer and watch the results. I can't imagine needing any more engine than my HO provides right now.

Can you imagine your 20 year younger self getting to drive your truck today? What would he say?

I know exactly what he would say, lol. I grew up and started driving in the 1980's and I've been a car/truck guy my entire life. The current 3 vehicles in my garage that I bounce between have a combined 2,170 horsepower, and only one of them has any serious power mods. "Golden Age" doesn't really do it justice.

We've come a long way from my trusty 2,8L S-10...

20 year old me was happy to have a 3.0l Ranger with 145 hp and ~ 165 ft-lb of torque, and a five speed. And I towed and hauled more often then I do now. Admittedly not nearly as heavy of trailers. I recall being blown away by our '96 company dually, Vortec 454, all 290 hp/410 ft-lb. of it

At this point I don't think traction and transmissions have caught up to these engines. I did find the video entertaining so good on GM for the marketing. In fairness they do have a 520 hp car for under $70k, and sell a 1,250 hp so they definitely seem convinced power numbers sell.

I don't need any more HP and TQ than my HO provides today. IF I get another truck, it's going to be a 30 SD. I'm kind of hoping it will be a powerful hybrid electric range monster. The internets say it may be a coyote on the generator side. IDK. Either that or keep Dita and drop every ounce of weight on that HO and tune her to survive the apocalypse.

I have the 6.7 SO and more power has never been on my wish list. There is an indirect relationship between HP/TQ and MPG. There is no free lunch.

I suppose some people care about bragging rights but it would take a lot more than that to get me to buy a Chevy.
