7.3 to lose 40 LB FT of TQ and 10 HP for 2027

Had a little conversation with ChatGPT and landed on this:


Ford eliminated the 6.8L entirely for 2027 and made the 7.3L the sole gasoline engine.

That means Ford was simultaneously:
  1. eliminating one gasoline engine family,
  2. making the 7.3L universal across the lineup,
  3. modifying the 7.3L to meet the new emissions requirements.
That’s a pretty strong indication that Ford chose to spend its engineering/compliance money on one gasoline engine rather than certify both the 6.8 and 7.3 for the new rules.

And I think there’s a strategic reason for the specific 445 lb-ft number

Look at this:

2026 6.8L: 405 hp / 445 lb-ft
2027 7.3L: 420 hp / 445 lb-ft

That’s almost certainly not coincidence.

Ford has effectively made the 7.3L produce the same peak torque as the outgoing 6.8L, while giving it another 15 hp.

So rather than engineering the 7.3L to retain its 485 lb-ft rating, Ford appears to have accepted a significant torque reduction to get the engine through the new emissions regime.

And there’s a business advantage: the customer still gets a 7.3L V8 instead of the 6.8L, but Ford doesn’t have to maintain two gasoline engine calibrations/certifications.

Why doesn’t GM have to do the same thing?

If GM’s 6.6L is indeed producing substantially more torque while meeting the same 2027 emissions requirements, that tells us something important about the relative emissions margins of the two engines.

It could mean:
  • GM’s L8T already had more emissions headroom;
  • GM’s catalyst/aftertreatment system is more capable;
  • GM’s combustion strategy is better optimized for the new test;
  • Ford’s 7.3L architecture has a particular weakness under the new test cycle;
  • or GM is accepting a different certification/credit strategy.

Back to my opinion: Ford is probably banking on past 7.3L and 6.8L sales performance with a worst case that people buy more PSDs (which would be better for Ford anyway). Or maybe GM is about to get a letter from the EPA!

I really want to compare hp/tq curves, not meaningless peak numbers at RPMs nobody wants to drive at. Somebody put these bitches on a dyno!

From what’s been gathered across a few different technical deep-dives into the new specs, here is what's really driving the change:

New SAE Testing Standards (87 Octane):

Under the new SAE J1349 testing rules, Ford switched to certifying the engine on 87-octane regular fuel instead of premium. Because 87 has less knock resistance under heavy load, the ECM automatically retards the ignition timing to protect the engine, which drops the official torque to 445 lb-ft. If you put 87 in a 2026 truck, you're getting this exact same power drop. If you put 93 in a 2027, the ECM advances the timing and gives the power right back.

Factoring in Parasitic Drag:

The updated SAE code requires that for vehicles over 8,500 lbs GVWR, the drag of the massive mechanical cooling fan running at maximum capacity must be deducted from the advertised net power. That alone accounts for about 15-20 lb-ft of torque right off the crankshaft. For 2026, they were able to omit this.

Emissions Compliance:

Ford stated this was updated for environmental standards (likely pointing to EPA Tier 4 criteria). Fortunately, Ford also confirmed they did not add a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) to the 7.3L like they did with some F-150 engines, so the engine is breathing exactly the same.

So the society of automotive engineers says Ford and Ford alone has to count the cooling fan? Righhtttt. As I said, Ford got ahead of it and had the cooling fan included starting in 2023, you can find the test parameters. 27 buyers are losing real power at the wheel whether you like it or not.

They just released the 27 Rams gas #’s (405 HP/430 LB FT) meaning zero power loss and Chevrolet has said publicly no concessions on power will be made for the 2027 model year. A 40 LB FT drop IS. NOT. A. PAPER. DERATE. Your logic makes zero sense.
