7.3 to lose 40 LB FT of TQ and 10 HP for 2027

Maybe just maybe, with the price of trucks now a days and rates what they are the 7.3 cut in to the 6.7 sales more than they thought it would. Not saying there was not a true change on how the power is measured, but There were to many damn engine options and restrictions on how and what you could get. I see it as them trying to steer the non- commercial guys that enjoy the 7.3 to the diesel by slowly nuterting it.

My guess is that there’s no way most buyers will change from gas to diesel over a bit of power loss. It’s actually counterintuitive since it just drives the horsepower hungry to the 6.6 Chevy. It was either done a) purely to match the new SAE test as Apples pointed out b) some sort of new noise (unlikely) or emissions regulation (possible) or c) cost. I could see that. Whether it’s the cost of fuel (regular versus premium) or some internal Ford cost I have no idea.

I do disagree with the idea there are only a few enthusiasts who care; yes some of us fit that category but look at the websites, commercials, advertisements they always talk about horsepower and towing capacity. You would never reduce when competitors were gaining. We even do it in my industry. “Most powerful pump in the industry” is the LinkedIn advertising every time someone builds a new pump.

As an enthusiast I didn’t understand why it wasn’t rated higher. As a business person who has a fleet, I want my F-550s to stand up to abuse regardless of power so that’s likely part of the motivation (and back to cheaper if all are the same spec versus a hotter light duty version and lower power F-450/550 like they do on the diesels for all the way up to the F-750)
 
All I know in my neck of the country I have never seen so many gas super duties in my life rolling around. I personally am not in the market for a new truck for a long while, barring any unfortunate event. I am sure ford can feel the cash loss from the diesel and what ever warranty issues with the cam/lifter issues of the 7.3.

ram, respectfully, there is no power loss. It was a change in how the same power was measured. That's it.

My strong 2025 suffers the identical "power loss/power derate" as any '27 Godzilla does: through parasitic losses caused by the front dress and when the engine cooling fan clutch engages.

That was the whole point of my posts earlier today, but it seems to have gone right over some peoples' heads!
 
I got it. I mean on paper. That’s why I referenced you. If Chevy has X and Ford has Y regardless of how derived if X>Y it sounds better.
 
To no one in particular, but to address the fear:

It is incredibly frustrating to watch a community succumb to "brochure panic" and aggressively reject a perfectly logical, verifiable engineering explanation. Automotive forums are notorious for this—people would genuinely rather believe in a secret corporate conspiracy to stealth-detune an engine than accept that testing math changed.

  • The EPA/CARB Nightmare: A manufacturer cannot just "slip in" a new camshaft profile without recertifying the engine with the EPA and CARB for emissions. A new cam profile changes valve overlap, duration, and lift, completely altering tailpipe emissions. Recertification costs millions of dollars and takes months. Why would Ford spend millions to make their engine look worse on paper?
  • The Parts Catalog Paradox: Ford's manufacturing efficiency relies on parts standardization. If there is a new, weaker cam, there would be a brand new part number in the Ford parts catalog specifically for the newer model year. Challenge them to find the new camshaft part number. (Spoiler: They can't, because the part number for the camshaft hasn't changed).
  • Fleet Average Logistics: The 7.3L is used across the Super Duty line, medium-duty trucks (F-550/F-650), and E-Series vans. Ford is not going to spin up a completely separate, weaker assembly line run of camshafts just to anger their retail F-250 buyers.

Some here are suffering from the "Brochure Horsepower Syndrome." For many truck owners, those peak numbers are a point of pride or tribal internet arguments (Ford vs. Chevy vs. Ram). To them, admitting the numbers dropped—even if it's just a paperwork adjustment—feels like losing an invisible competition.

They are confusing Engine Potential with Certified Net Output. The long block is a air pump capable of the original numbers; the SAE J1349 rating just forces Ford to officially state what happens to that power when the massive, heavy-duty cooling fan is screaming at 100% duty cycle while towing a 15,000-lb trailer up a mountain in Arizona.

If Ford actually changed the camshaft, please explain why the physical part number in the Ford parts catalog is identical, and why Ford would spend millions of dollars in EPA emissions recertification just to make their truck look worse on a sales brochure?

They didn't. The engine has the exact same mechanical capability it always had. You are panicking over a paperwork change. Under SAE J1349, Ford has to account for the heavy-duty cooling fan's parasitic drag. The 'missing' 40 lb-ft of torque is literally just the fan doing its job keeping the engine cool under max load. Your truck will tow exactly the same. Turn off the brochure panic and go drive your truck.
 
Is the L8S a Gen 6 engine? If so that’s totally different from Gen 5 and reliability has yet to be proven. The first release will be the 6.7 in the Grand Sport, GSX and Stingray and then the 5.7/6.6 in the trucks. If it’s just an updated L8T then the reliability likely holds.

I just deleted my L8S comment to stop the arguing. No ramv isn’t crazy, he was replying to me bringing up the L8S (upcoming replacement for L8T).

I don’t have any issue with any engine/brand just commenting the GM confused us all by keeping the displacement but changing engines. (Not that they haven’t don’t that before.)

There’s only three choices in HD trucks and only two in fast desert trucks so in my mind you don’t want to be too loyal. I have had all three brands of HD and my Ford is my favorite but my first diesel and my newest by over 21 years from my oldest.

The friggen 2027 parts catalogue is not available. Yet you're here screaming from the rooftop like you have a clue.

You can mock me all you want... but how many engines have you personally built? How many cams have you selected for your builds?

Your theory holds no water. The LOCATION of the torque peak changed.

No fucking cooling fan load is going to do that.

PERIOD.
