I've never quite understood the appeal of many of the upper trim levels. The enormous price increases for the same foundation add nothing to the capabilities of the truck. Granted, there are a few options I would have splurged for on my XLT had they been available a la carte, but even then, nothing beyond the XLT trim. I understand some people like the bells and whistles, but I am not one of them. I remember when the top trim levels on a vehicle gave you AC, power locks, and power windows. Now those are basic standard equipment on all trim levels. I looked hard at the SAP and Premium package options(can't have one without the other), but couldn't justify the price increase for the few things I would have liked to have. I have my opinions, but being as I purchased this truck for me, I'll rationalize my decision:
Super Duty - totally a want over a need. Could have bought any 1/2 ton truck I wanted and it would have done everything I need. I've always loved the SD's and being as I keep my vehicles for longer than most, I wanted something more durable and dependable for the long run. I also wanted to get a combustible V8 while they were still an option, not some eco-diesel, hybrid, or twin turbo V6. I had been following the redesign, and as soon as the first 2023's hit the streets and became a reality, I decided that was the route I was going and ordered my 2024 as soon as the books opened back in July.
XL vs. XLT - if I could have added a console and power folding mirrors to the XL, I would have gone with the STX package. Those are the only two options that pushed me to an XLT, otherwise the XL STX package would have given me everything else I wanted.
Tremor Package - I actually like the wheels, and the factory warrantied capabilities and 35's were worth it to me in both form and function. Needed? No, but worth it for my likes and the added capabilities in a stock configuration over the standard FX4.
Sport Appearance Package(SAP) - after the Tremor pkg, only thing I would have liked from this was the LED headlights and painted bumpers, purely for the looks(appearance). I do like the look, but functionally, prefer the chrome bumpers and halogens for long term durability and upkeep expense. Now that I have my truck, I'm glad I went the way I did without the SAP.
XLT Premium Package - I likely would have added this if it wasn't a requirement to also add the SAP. Only thing I couldn't add as an option from this package which I would have liked was the 12" screen and Intelligent Access. I have found the 8" screen to be plenty, but the 12" would be pretty cool. I have also always had a keyed vehicle, so the Intelligent Access would be a new experience, but seems like it would be a convenient feature. At the end of the day, the increase in cost to add both SAP and Premium just wasn't worth it to me. Lots of stuff I don't want to add the stuff I do at a premium cost.
Added options - Center console, $300 was a no brainier for me for my use and preference. Power folding mirrors, big truck, garage, parking lots, worth it. 360 camera, again, big truck, parking, worth it. Box lighting, why wouldn't you? Sliding rear window, I have kids, a dog, and liked to have the option. Upfitter switches, may never use them, but for $165, worth it. Clearance lights, $95 and they just belong on a 1 ton truck.
F250 vs F350 - Tremor package equalizes capabilities, here in MN, it's $120 a year for tabs on a 1 ton. No brainer.
Closing thoughts - I live in MN and have never had a vehicle with heated seats or heated steering. My wife has them, and I never use them. I can always add them later if so desired. She also has adaptive cruise, which again is nice, but I've used standard cruise control my entire life and it's never been an issue. I'm now just shy of 1000 miles on my 2024 XLT Tremor and I don't think I'd do anything different. I'm sure at some point I'll swap out the halogen bulbs for some LED ones, but it'll be significantly cheaper than the sealed LED's, however, probably won't be as effective as melting off the MN ice and snow. The cloth seats are nice and comfortable, not too hot, not too cold, and we'll see how they hold up over time. I have yet to see another '23+ XLT Tremor on the road, so it's still a bit unique in my neck of the woods. $60,838.22 gave me one hell of a truck. The savings off any higher trim level or packages will be a much better investment elsewhere, at least for me.
