Vecman's Build - Boyhood Dreams Realized!

Filled up the coolant, and took her for a short spin to get her up to temp and let the coolant circulate around. Engine light came on. Crap. I did something wrong. Drove over to autozone, had them pull the codes. Intake air pressure/temperature sensor. Hmm. Ahh, forgot to plug the sensor back in. Plugged it in, cleared the codes, no more issues! Whew!! I mean, I didn’t have any parts/bolts left over, so pretty sure I put everything back where it should go. Haha. Glad it was just that.
You’re a brave man. I watched some of the videos on getting to those small bolts in tidy places and i really did not want to do it. This is one area where i might decide to spend the money and take it to a pro mechanic. Lights, wires, drilling, body installs dont intimidate me, but the cramped powerstroke engine quarters do:-)

Ignorance is bliss - the videos I watched really didn’t seem to be that bad, hence why I tackled it. But no more. That definitely was way too big of a project for me. Although, getting the swivel adapter was a major game changer, and would have helped out a lot on the removal in the first place, I just don’t want to deal with that anymore. I don’t mind swapping out some pipes and air intakes and such, but yeah, when I saw the manifolds out of the truck sitting on the bench, and the huge hole in my engine bay, I did wonder if I would get it all back in there correctly. Good experience, not really interested in doing it again

That’s as far as it would go into the SPE base. I should have taken a picture from the bottom, to show it was hitting metal. I am beyond frustrated! All that work for nothing! That was such a miserable experience, I hated to give up. But I tried for 2 hours to think of anything I may be doing wrong. It just didn’t fit. So, I buttoned everything back done (which wasn’t as bad as removing it luckily) - installed the new items, and closed shop. After almost 8 hours under the hood, I’m exhausted. I decided to skip the CCV reroute, as I was just so mad, frustrated, and honestly just tired of reaching into small crazy spaces to take bolts off. If I want to do that in the future, it can be done fairly easily without doing anything else.

I see you did the S&B cold pipe, and the SPE hot side. I did the same. My gripe was the SPE hot side pipe. Opened the SPE box, all the parts were there, totally loose, no packing. Took the wrapping off the pipe and it was scratched up due to all the clamps being able to move around. The video install this guy does for SPE screwed up on both pipes, not impressed with the install videos.

When you did the top radiator hose and drained the coolant, how much if any drained out of the thermostat when you removed it? Also I assume there is a O ring type seal on the block side? Thanks.

I drained about 3.5 gallons of coolant. Took the hoses off and had very little coolant come out. When I got down to the thermostat, very little drained when I removed it also. I think 3.5-4 gallons of coolant drainage is enough to comfortably work on all this stuff. Sucks about your pipe. Mine was packaged well. There’s an o-ring on the radiator side, but attaching it to the block, I don’t recall a ring there. It’s just 3 bolts torqued down and those ring clamps that tighten around the hose and the new connector.

Thank you, so is the O-ring part of the SPE kit?

Yes, it has everything needed
Was wondering if you were able to get SPE to answer thier phone. All I can get is a recording, no call back with messages left now for several hours. I'm beginning to doubt this company's integrity. They are happy to take your money, but your on your own after that.

SPE is a joke for customer service. I recommend HS Motorsports for upgrade parts.

I’ve never tried to call SPE - only email. I hate their customer service. Product quality has been fine by me, just this latest issue. But besides part quality, everything else is terrible. Always an excuse as to why an order is late or whatever.

What are you planning to use the PTO for? Just curious

I can't even get them to respond to emails!!!

Well, it was such a cheap option, just wanted to put it on there. Originally it was to run a generator. But the company I contacted isn’t interested in working with individual clients, only bigger companies. So now it probably will never be used for anything, unless someone decided to do a generator for us little guys. Real Power AC had a 15kW generator that mounts to the frame. I think the option is slick, but they just don’t want to work with customers like us and, due to that, is more than likely cost prohibitive as well. I’m hoping someone pops up with some cool options. I would love something like a small frame mounted generator and then an in-bed interface similar to the F-150 Onboard ProPower setup. That would be great

Installed the small panel in the center console. Note to self, the smaller openings around the edges are NOT big enough for the included screws. I learned this AFTER I had already marked and drilled my holes. I was able to widen the gap and make it work. Glad it worked out, I was worried a bit. Love this addition.

Also installed the rear release kit tonight (I plan on doing some audio stuff eventually so figured might as well put this in now). Install was easy. @Jericho - I closed it right the first time! Then, reached back to see where the release strap was, pulled up a bit on it to have it reachable, and it released again. So I thought, hey, no problem, closed it easy the first time. Yeah…. Took me 30 damn minutes to close it again, and even when it latched, I’m still not sure what I did right! Haha!

How in the world did you separate the plastic piece from the lid? I’ve tried twice and feel like it’s going to break.

Yep! Have fun!

There’s a YouTube video somewhere of someone doing it, that may help you see better where the clips are

Got emails back from SPE - "we haven’t had any issues with your truck and this kit.z" They’re sending me another part to try. Great…. I’m just gonna compare it to the original one and see. If it’s the same size, I’m not interested. And even if it’s not, not sure I’m interested in taking the engine apart again. Might have to pay a shop.

This is their typical response: "We've sold thousands and have no issues"

Avoid them at all costs.

Too late now, as they have my money. The other parts were fine, but it sucks that this particular kit has to be all the way to the fuel pump.

Just saying for the future. I have a list of more stuff from HS motorsports I want to get eventually, plus the S&S Gen 2.1 disaster kit.
