holler anytimeI’ve been doing my research on them for years and everything you have said seems to be very accurate for the breed. One of the main reasons I haven’t gotten one is because I don’t have the time to dedicate to training a Chessie the right way. Like you said, they need continuous training and exposure to different environments and experiences. It wouldn’t be fair to get a pup and then not have the time to spend with it daily. I believe one will be my retirement gift. I’ve also read that as stubborn as they may seem, they are incredibly intelligent and can become discouraged and frustrated when they sense you are forcing them to do something. Seems like showing them the “why” along with the command tends to work better if that makes sense. With you having 4 of them previously, I might have to bounce you for some more information about them if you would be willing.
i did not (bird hunter) train mine
I'm like you. thought the breed was awesome upon my first encounter.
never knew of the breed prior
drove up to a friend of my father-in-law. had 180acre place. pull up to the house. chessie, big deadgrass made it clear. you're really stupid if you get out of your car. the owner, the guy we were coming to see. walked around the corner. hollered "rooster chill". Rooster immediately chilled & was like best old friends the rest of the time. incredible!!!!!!
mine were territorial too. had to introduce whoever came around. after that initial encounter they we great. crazy part??? had a teenaged neighbor, he would come over, play fetch with them for hours. walk out of the gate & I'd have to make sure to go through the introduction ritual, not only the next day but as soon as the gate closed & he wanted to come back in. it was crazy???
my wife wasn't consistent enough for them to be as well trained as i liked.
but you are exactly right about sensitive gentle highly repetitive reward training only.
not that you can't say no & scolled if needed but reward & positive reinforcement or they'll quit on you.
family
everyone needs to go through the paces with them & everyone needs to rotate in feeding.
feeding & rewards (treats) automatically sets hierarchy the easy way.
awsome dogs but they do need training, socialization & continued exposure. the more the merrier!!!!
they are not Labs with a wirery coat!!!!!!
any questions let me know!!!
