Sand Dunes I ride at have some very different rules:

• All vehicles must have a whip attached to the ORV that extends 10 feet from the ground to the top of the whip.
• All vehicles must have a 6" x 12" flag attached within 10" of the whip's tip. It must be bright solid orange in color.
• All vehicles must have a bright white front and red rear lights powered by the vehicle for night use.
• Dune buggies and 4x4 vehicles must have a roll bar sufficient to support the weight of the vehicle and must have a seat belt for each passenger.

Stupid Question # 2 - What does attached 10" from the top mean --> tow hooks is too low for a mount ?

Sounds like it is giving a measurable way to say don't mount the flag half way up the 8' ft whip.

Edit: this requirement was for Moab and/or Sand Hallow. Silver Lake has a 10' from the ground requirement. So depending where you mount, the whip may need to be longer or shorter than 8'.

I can not guarantee that it won't, which is why I recommend adding something such as a pool noodle over the whip, but having a thicker whip helps to prevent this. I haven't bought one yet, but I plan to get a 1/2" whip to help prevent this.

This mount is designed to be very similar to other mounts on the market so it should be just as likely as others to hit the hood. As people start to use these, please report back if the whip is always hitting the hood. I can easily make the metal longer to get it further from the bumper/hood, but I tried to also keep it tucked in and not sticking too far out.

Maybe a slight bend in the metal piece to offset some of the whip bend to help prevent it hitting the hood.

I like the tennis ball idea. There are smaller tennis balls made for throwing fetch toys for smaller dogs - I may use one of those coated grey.

Where’re you fellers finding 8’ fiberglas whips? I see 6’ but want taller and either 3/8 or 1/2” dia.

There are more options near the Dunes but I think a lot of places don't like shipping the longer whips due to high shipping.

I was wondering why whips might not come in two threaded sections in order to break down into two 4' pieces when stowed in the truck for highway travel.

Agreed that there are options out there but I'd love one that is two 4' sections. The tow hook is about 2' above the ground and Michigan requires 10'. I also want it to be 1/2".

The option I posted higher is also split but 9' 4". Similar to there being other mounts on the market, I saw that it could be better and went for. I'd love to do or find the same thing for the whip.
