It’s a loop. Starts off of Thumb Butte Rd and loops back around. Starts and ends in Prescott. Good little write up about it here. We used to do this almost every month.

Wasn’t suggesting it for this meetup that you all are planning. Someone had mentioned Prescott.

Prescott is also home to the world’s oldest rodeo.

I'm familiar with Weaver Mountain but not this particular area of Prescott you spoke about.

Certainly seems like a nice family drive through the pines.

Thank you for the reminder - I forgot to talk about camping areas.

From where DTX is staying, if you keep driving south along Highway 89A, you will come to the town's limits in about two blocks. If you keep driving south and (you'd be leaving the Red Rock area and descending in elevation) about 5 miles, once you're down into the high desert, you will begin to see Fores Service Roads off to either direction (left or right) where you can go hide out and camp. You have about 8 miles of this before you get into the next town which is Cottonwood.

This area which I just described (this being east of HWY 89A) is where I will be staying - I know it as the Page Springs area also known as Cornville -- our wine country sits alongside Oak Creek Canyon.

Quite frankly, anything Northwest outside of Sedona, you can literally take any road that will lead you into the backroads and fine a place to hideout.

I have circled in red, areas which you may find hideout spots, all within 20-30 minutes of Sedona.

For anyone with trailers, Point of Rocks RV campground in Prescott Valley is a nice campground near Watson Lake. It's about an hour to/from Sedona via Jerome.

Where in AZ are you?

I was up in this region all last weekend and will be once again this weekend.

I have a job at Lynx Lake but when we get jobs like this in the area, I try to make it a family weekend.

We will most likely stay in Prescott Friday night, get the job done Saturday, then mosey on into the wine country for the remained of the weekend.

I'd really like to stay in the wine country all weekend if possible (have one place to stay versus moving around) but it is quite the drive to head back into Prescott. It's really slow going through Jerome if I need to get to Prescott quickly, from the other side of Mingus Mountain.

Where in AZ are you?

I'm in Tucson.

I like Point of Rocks because it's just to the north of the town of Prescott and much easier to get in and out of from I-10 across 189. It's doable as a home base from the north side of Mingus but would get old if you have to do that drive more than once in a few days. Watson Lake is a nice spot to do some kayaking or SUPing (no powered watercraft). Seems like a good central spot if you're going to be at Lynx lake, too. There is also a campground inside Watson Lake Park but I think it is all dry camping..

For anyone looking for a nice campground, we stayed at lo lo mai a few years back. They have some spaces that back right up to oak creek. Nice family place and close to some nice wineries in cottonwood and cornville. It’s about 20 minutes outside of Sedona.

Thanks for the link...always fun to find how much stuff can change over time. We ran into the same a couple of times in the passes in Colorado. Looks like you had an epic trip--the damage sucks, but the memories are top notch. I really hope I can make it out there...

It was between way points 5 and 6 where I felt the trail went from a basic 6 to a solid 7.8ish+

Luckily, we did it counterclockwise which I think its the best route one should take; climbing up those rutted and rocky areas versus sliding down them (I am not a fan of having to use brakes constantly, it bets boring).

I kept both my axles locked that entire strectch of the way. Slowly but surely crawling up, picking the best lines and at times sliding sideways into deep crevices then having to work your way out of them.

I would love to do it again but with a lot more time to really spare and enjoy the technical parts of it AND get more ground footage of our rigs strecthing its legs out and grasping for traction.

making 2 trips out of these travels

after the CDT trip with @TellurideTremor, Moab will still be a little warm for my liking. that would be mid-aug to early-sept. so, new plans are to be home and convoy with @DTX2023Tremor & whoever else is going on this trip from our neck of the woods.

do Moab after we're done in Sedona. that'll make it late sept. season is way more hospitable then

It's a short enough trip I'm gonna try and swing it. Life's too dang short and my truck gets higher smiles per gallon when it tells me to shift to neutral first
