2022 Sync 4 software update with full screen carplay/android auto

Just to document this for posterity.... I ended up getting the module configs from Jesse over on the f150gen14 forum. There are actually 3 modules that get updated -- GWM, APIM and TCM. All of which errored out the same way when I tried doing it through FDRS.

Everything loaded fine and we're off to the races. Also enabled the Unreal engine, I don't care much about climate control stuff on the screen.

For the Android Auto folks out there, not a great story with full screen (at least on mine). AA is the same size it was, but now, there's a 'fullscreen' icon you can press. It makes the right pane (where something useful was) into a clock.

Maybe there's an AA update coming or something.
So updating the GWM, HVAC, APIM didn't resolve the RS and no seat heat. Sigh!

Glad to hear you got it sorted out.

I likely will just wait for the updates to come OTA. I don't feel like spending $500 on a mongoose cable.
I have a small fleet of Ford vehicles that I can now fully service. For me, the Mongoose is a no-brainer. If I just had one car, notsomuch. Playing with my personal truck is just a bonus!

Gonna quote myself here, my buddies F150 acts the same so I guess I’m gonna have to head out to my parents and connect my trailer and see what happens
Did you get a chance to connect your trailer and see if that enabled the trailer routing profile in the navigation? I am really hoping that Ford resolves this issue and allows for use on the SD.

Still no OTA update for me.

Don't hold your breath on this one. My sons F150 got the first update (the GWM portion) back in early November. He never got the second one (APIM portion). I upgraded his manually as we both got sick of waiting. Without knowing the rollout schedule there is very little way to know when you will get it.

Also keep in mind that the second portion is just over 5Gb of data. With our trucks not having 5G, that is going to take a lot of time to download.

I may be purchasing new tires next week and will use my local dealer if they'll match Discount Tire. I'll ask them to perform the update for me...hopefully they'll do it.

Worth noting I don't think I've received any OTA update since I bought the truck in July.

not yet, I was busy installing a heated steering wheel, troubleshooting headlight swap, and 2 birthday parties this past weekend. I gotta be honest I dont think this is going to work on our SD

I’ve been reading through this a bit and maybe I’m just apprehensive to jump into this without a consolidated list of steps or a precisely lined out process, but I would be willing to pay (or offer all you can drink 😅) someone in the Houston, TX area to help me knock this out.

I’ve got a cable as well for doing the Forscan updates (that I haven’t done in the 6+ months I’ve had it) as well. Would really like to knock this out before leaving for my hunting trip end of next week and willing to travel to you and accommodate any timeframe that would work with said generous individual’s schedule!!

If anyone wants to sell their Vxdiag or mongoose I may be interested if the price is right

Mine is going in to get the carpet replaced from my water leak next week. We'll see if dealer is amenable to updating.

I just picked up a full chip VCM II clone. We'll see how it goes.

What one did you buy? Will it do the same things as the vxdiag and mongooses?
If it works identically to a real Bosch VCM II, it should be better. I've read of instances where certain modules won't update using J2534 (which is what the VXDIAG and mongoose uses) Its what a Ford tech at a dealership would likely be using.

The risk is that it's a clone and not guaranteed to be as good quality wise. A real VCM cost around $1500 if not more.

I bought this one:

That's odd. I have a Samsung Galaxy s20FE; I place my phone on the capacitance charger and use it for Nav and streaming music and I have a full charge when I finish my road trip.
Not all Android phones are created equal in this regard. I have a Pixel 6 Pro and if I try to use wireless Android Auto and the wireless charging pad at the same time, the phone will heat up until it finally drops its wireless charging connection (after about 20 minutes). If I leave it disconnected from wireless Android Auto, (so it's basically doing nothing" then it will charge fine. I just can't handle the thermal load of all that activity all at once, unfortunately.

I received the first OTA update about a week ago. Who knows when the next one will show up.

How did it work out

How did it work out
Unfortunately no dice. It would connect and then immediately disconnect after opening FDRS and stop responding.

After further research, sounds like Ford is keeping tight wraps on these clone units and have blacklisted their serial numbers.

There are ways around it, but the amount of time and energy involved in making it work just isn't worth it IMO. I'm going to be returning it and getting a refund.

I'll likely get a Mongoose Cable at some point and call it a day.

Is anyone else's truck trying to switch to carplay audio every time it starts up regardless of the audio source on shutdown?

I've been listening to sirius mostly and each time my truck starts and connects carplay it tries to boot up spotify or something on my phone and I have to switch audio source back to sirius (or whatever). Kinda annoying.

Not sure if this started before the update or after, I do have the update.
