Wrist Watch Porn

And that's just getting started! This particular Parmigiani is about $26k.

You should see his UN Freak. @RoM357 shows us the Freak! Let's go freaking-A 🤪!
Alright, here you go. I sorta stopped replying in the thread because the numbers talk has nothing to do with my interests. I stumbled across this topic after I joined the community and thought I would share a little. Honestly, with the word PORN in the title, I assumed you started it!! :ROFLMAO:

Haha! Nope, someone beat me to it.

This watch is probably my favorite in your collection. It's very unique, modern and well, it's freaky!

I can’t recall ever taking all the watches out for a picture before. Seeing them in aggregate makes me feel sorta stupid. Lots of evidence of impulse-purchasing. I’m attached to a few of them, which is kinda stupid in itself. That money could have been better spent. All but three of these watches were less than $800, and most were less than $350. Still, if my wife saw this I’d never be able to tease her about shoes again.

Edit: Yesterday I called the local Rolex dealer to see what it would cost to get my Submariner serviced. The “annual” service is now $800. That’s ridiculous, of course, but it’s the inevitable result of having a useful piece of equipment turn into a popular yuppie status symbol. In the 70s I saw this watch on divers and the occasional sailor/sportsman, and nobody else. Today, everybody and their dog is wearing them, whether they can swim or not. It’s like all the people driving jeeps that have literally never been put in four-wheel-drive. The world sure has changed a lot. I don’t get it.
I was 20 years old in 2000, my friends dad collected, repaired and sold Rolex watches out of his house. He had a ton of them. I remember seeing a 5 gallon bucket full of Rolex’s. He would buy them at auctions, in bulk, etc. he would fix them up and sell them and made decent money at it for a side job. Everyone in his family wore some kind of Rolex, his son, my friend had an old plain military Rolex he even wore. So one day he told me that I needed to get a Rolex, he sold me a gmt master, I made monthly payments to him, he wrote them on a piece of paper and when the whopping some of $3500 was paid in full he gave it to me. He told me not to sell it even if I’m broke. I wore it a couple times, it’s been in my gun safe in the box it came in for years. Last year I had it appraised, I was offered $14,500. Not for sale, but I would say that was a good investment.

Very cool story. That would probably be harder to pull off today. Rolex is much more strict and controlling about many aspects of their business model. For example, in the 70s, 80s, and 90s you used to be able to buy extra watch faces, so you could mix and match. We did that with my wife’s Datejust. Now Rolex has firm control of the parts and strict rules about who can buy what and why. Also, the counterfeit market has gotten extremely sophisticated. Fakes used to be easy to spot. Not so anymore. Some counterfeiters have learned to match the weight, feel, and oyster sweep, so even Rolex-certified repair personnel can be fooled until they have the back off the watch and can see the innards.

In 1986 my dad gave me a GMT. (The only other gift I remember my dad ever giving me was my first shotgun when I was 8.) By that time I knew better than to dive with my Rolex, and I figured that I didn’t need two, so I sold my submariner to the jeweler for $1000. I figured that was about 50% more than I’d paid for it, so I let it go. That decision makes my top 100 list of dumb decisions, and that’s saying a LOT. A few years after that my wife gave birth to twin boys, and I knew I’d eventually want to give them each an equivalent watch, so I bought a new submariner for $2500. I don’t know what my Rolexes are worth now, but whatever the number, it’s probably substantially less than my original sub from the early 70s.

Edit: My boys acquired my love of diving. Both were on scuba by ten and certified as soon as they were old enough, but neither has any interest in watches, jeeps, or trucks. Both are practical and frugal (cheap). They dive, ski, sky-dive, rock-climb, and surf, so they buy boring Subaru wagons with racks all over the place, and drive them until the wheels fall off… (I know what you’re thinking… No, they’re are both engaged to marry women this summer… sheesh. 🤣 )

Yes! I'll take this one over a Rolex any day. Clean, subtle and super classy. Congrats my friend!

Awesome! I am a big Glashutte Original fan. I owned the 25 piece edition of the WG Senator Chronometer. I sold it to a friend when I bought the Parmigiani, and I still see it on a regular basis. Another brand overlooked by most!

It was split from another thread and originally titled 'Watch Porn' but some members got confused so 'Wrist' was added shortly after.

Yep, you are correct!

Here’s my daily as of basically the new year. Ticks all of my boxes: durable, automatic, crown guard, date complication, lightweight, and slightly different. I’m technically a lefty (well I eat, brush my teeth, write, and throw a frisbee lefty at least) so the destro’s are “made” for me, but I started wearing a watch on my left side so that became irrelevant, however I find that I prefer having the crown on the left side because I’m active and I rarely take my watch off before engaging in any task. Right hand crowns tend to press into my hand/wrist when bending certain ways, but the destro’s have a beautiful smooth side towards my hand that never gets in the way.

That day date slaps!
Yeah it was a nice one. Ended up selling it and buying a GT350 instead, its a bit more fun than a watch that ended up sitting mostly (work from home).

I guess I'll join in. The Breitling was a gift from my wife, the Gruen is from my grandfather, the Omega is my wedding gift from 2010 (swapped out the titanium band for a nato strap in 2023), and the pocket watch is from the same grandfather as the Gruen. He used to own beauty salons back in the 50's and would barter a lot for services.
