Tremor Reserve: The Pheasant Edition

A few of you have asked whether we'd ever go after the really rare stuff — the bottles that run $200 to $600 and come from stocks old enough to vote. The answer is yes, and it now has a name.

I'd originally kicked around calling it The Platinum Edition, partly because Ford doesn't offer the Tremor package on the Limited trim and partly because I liked the idea of mirroring how Four Roses does their annual Limited Edition. Then @mattagc suggested The Pheasant Edition — "they're the ones smart enough to spend the money on the good stuff." For anyone who hasn't run across it, "pheasant" is forum shorthand for someone who couldn't spring for the fancier trim. So naming our most expensive whiskey program after being whiskey poor was too good to pass up. Sold. 🐦

Why we get access

Tim at The Whiskey Blendery has been a genuine supporter of what we're building here. He works with several groups that buy barrels six to eight times a year, but he likes that we're getting Blendery whiskey into hands all over the country rather than just around DFW / OK. So he's extending us something special: a heads-up on the rare, highly limited releases before they hit the floor.

How it works

When Tim has something that falls into the ultra-premium category, he'll give me advance notice. I'll then survey the group to find out who's interested and how many bottles each person wants. That response is a soft commitment to purchase — these releases often sell out in minutes, so there isn't room for anyone to sit on the fence. I'll generally need answers within 48 hours.

To be very clear: there is no expectation that you buy anything. You only commit when you tell me you want a specific release, and that's purely so Tim knows how many bottles to set aside for us. Sit out ten in a row and jump in on the eleventh — that's how this is designed to work.

All of this will be handled by PM rather than in the open thread. Two reasons: it makes sure the alert actually gets your attention when the clock is ticking, and it keeps Tim out of an awkward spot with customers who don't have the access we're being offered. I'd ask everyone to be mindful of that second one.

What "ultra-premium" actually means

Sometime in October we're expecting a 22-year American Light Whiskey. Further out, a 35-year-old Single Malt Scotch. These aren't casual pours. They're for folks who understand what they're getting at that price and are excited about the chance to try something that genuinely doesn't come around often.

As with our other releases, bottles are purchased directly from The Blendery — I'm just handling logistics. Shipping is additional for anyone who needs it.

What I need from you

If you want to be on the list, reply to this thread and I'll add you. Being on the list costs you nothing and obligates you to nothing; it just means you'll get the PM when something lands.

Cheers,
Michael
please add me to the pheasant list

Pheasant Club — Closing the List

We're approaching 50 members on the Pheasant Club list, which is more interest than I expected and a good problem to have. It's also forced a decision I want to be upfront about.

The math doesn't work. The first release we're likely to see is a barrel holding fewer than 30 bottles. With 50 people on the list, most of you would come away empty-handed on our very first offer — and the same will be true for a lot of these releases. A list that large stops being a group with access and starts being a lottery.

So I'm making two changes.

First, the list is closed to new signups as of today.

Second, going forward, Pheasant Club access requires active participation in the core Tremor Reserve program.

Let me explain the reasoning on that second one, because it matters. The reason our group is getting early access to their rarest barrels is the success of Tremor Reserve. That program is what put Blendery whiskey in hands all over the country, and that's what earned us a seat at the table for the good stuff. The two aren't separate — one exists because of the other.

Right now we have about 60 bottles left of Tremor Reserve IV — a 13-year 5-month 95/5 rye at $150. It's excellent whiskey and it hasn't sold out. If you're on the Pheasant list but haven't supported a Reserve release, this is the straightforward way to qualify, and it's open now.

I'll finalize the list on September 12. If you've supported any Reserve release, past or current, you're in. If not, you'll come off the list — and I want to be clear that isn't a judgment about anyone. It just means the group reflects who's actually building this thing with us.

Reinstatement is always available. Support a future Reserve release and message me, and you're back on.

I know some of you will disagree with this and I'm open to hearing it. But with sub-30-bottle allocations, I'd rather have a group where a "yes" actually means a bottle.

Cheers,
Michael

Micheal- you run an amazing organization. I think (hope) everyone understands and agrees. Our group is fortunate to have you and the relationship you created with the Blendery.

Having access to some amazing opportunities including tastings, blendings, and now rare opportunities has been truly amazing.

Thank you for all you do.

Add me to the list, thanks

Mike, finally had time to sit down and page through the forum. I'm in if there's room and totally get the process your working with (y)

I would like to be in as well. If not no problem. I was late to the party.

I believe this is an appropriate way to keep it going and strong. I would imagine that if someone passes there is going to be a queue for the next up person, making the cap at 50 a solid number with some room for the “pass”
