A few of you have asked whether we'd ever go after the really rare stuff — the bottles that run $200 to $600 and come from stocks old enough to vote. The answer is yes, and it now has a name.
I'd originally kicked around calling it The Platinum Edition, partly because Ford doesn't offer the Tremor package on the Limited trim and partly because I liked the idea of mirroring how Four Roses does their annual Limited Edition. Then @mattagc suggested The Pheasant Edition — "they're the ones smart enough to spend the money on the good stuff." For anyone who hasn't run across it, "pheasant" is forum shorthand for someone who couldn't spring for the fancier trim. So naming our most expensive whiskey program after being whiskey poor was too good to pass up. Sold.
Why we get access
Tim at The Whiskey Blendery has been a genuine supporter of what we're building here. He works with several groups that buy barrels six to eight times a year, but he likes that we're getting Blendery whiskey into hands all over the country rather than just around DFW / OK. So he's extending us something special: a heads-up on the rare, highly limited releases before they hit the floor.
How it works
When Tim has something that falls into the ultra-premium category, he'll give me advance notice. I'll then survey the group to find out who's interested and how many bottles each person wants. That response is a soft commitment to purchase — these releases often sell out in minutes, so there isn't room for anyone to sit on the fence. I'll generally need answers within 48 hours.
To be very clear: there is no expectation that you buy anything. You only commit when you tell me you want a specific release, and that's purely so Tim knows how many bottles to set aside for us. Sit out ten in a row and jump in on the eleventh — that's how this is designed to work.
All of this will be handled by PM rather than in the open thread. Two reasons: it makes sure the alert actually gets your attention when the clock is ticking, and it keeps Tim out of an awkward spot with customers who don't have the access we're being offered. I'd ask everyone to be mindful of that second one.
What "ultra-premium" actually means
Sometime in October we're expecting a 22-year American Light Whiskey. Further out, a 35-year-old Single Malt Scotch. These aren't casual pours. They're for folks who understand what they're getting at that price and are excited about the chance to try something that genuinely doesn't come around often.
As with our other releases, bottles are purchased directly from The Blendery — I'm just handling logistics. Shipping is additional for anyone who needs it.
What I need from you
If you want to be on the list, reply to this thread and I'll add you. Being on the list costs you nothing and obligates you to nothing; it just means you'll get the PM when something lands.
