Rough Country Hidden Winch Mount

Ended up taking the winch back and they exchanged it no issues. Got a new one and hooked it up, worked fine.

I have to say that I can’t recommend using the Badlands winch with the RC kit.
1) you have to remove the end cover of the gear side. That details removing all of the gear sets and planetaries, then using a wobble Allen key (4mm) to get four bolts from under the second planetary.
2) I had to cut a corner of the gear side cover, still. I also used a grinder on a corner of the mount on that side
3) you can’t use the clutch lever without cutting a pretty good portion of the lever itself and the weakest area of the fairlead mount. I cut it with a bandsaw and then reinforced by welding a piece behind the area I cut. I work in the hospital, so don’t make fun of my cuts and welding. I’m going to coat the handle end with Plastidip and painting the mount again. Not sure if my weld is enough to brace but we will see.
4) control relocation kit is unusable. It’s huge and not easy to mount. I ordered a relocation box off Amazon and will do that when it comes in.
I wonder if they make a longer clutch lever that would stick oat further beyond. Or modify it to be longer?

Sounds like you had your work cut out for you. Simply not fun but that's what happens when you're "piece-mealing" two things together.

Some swear by BADLANDS; I've never ran them personally but you would think that with the reputation they have, they would have their sheit well put together, no pun intended.

Glad you found a way around all those hiccups and perhaps the first in the '24MY?

It’s very intricately cut on the inside and seems to be some aluminum alloy. The only way to extend it would be to cut and weld. I can barely weld and my bandsaw is the portable type so I couldn’t think of a way of making it work. Just to see, I drilled and tapped the side of the handle that I cut. Too soft to use as the base of a bolt to turn.

If someone had a metal filament 3d printer, they could make this in a day and I would buy two lol

For sure. I knew it would be some work but not this many modifications that essentially make the winch unreturnable.

I bought the rough country mount first when I was looking at adding a winch. After getting it and seeing what would be needed to use the badlands winch I returned it and went with the Gorman Tech mount instead. I used an Amazon relay box to relocate the relay and wireless receiver behind the grille.

I got my Amazon relay box yesterday and mounted it. That part was easy besides none of the grommets fitting over the pre-installed leads. I don’t really want to redo them so I’ll just use grommets and RTV the holes.

Just like everything else, install of the fairlead bracket was kind of a pain. I couldn’t get it centered due to the location of the electrical leads. Could have notched out a bit of the mount again, but ended up drilling the holes on the passenger side a little wider so the mount is a hair offset.

Just curious, but why a Badlands winch over a Rough Country that was made to work with that specific bracket setup? I mean if like someone else posted above that they are ALL made in china now, INCLUDING WARN why pick the one that wasn't made for the bracket over the one that was? Is the Badlands rated more than 12K lbs?

I wanted the badlands because it included a wireless remote out of the box and has way more real world examples of working hard while also being at a price point that I was willing to pay. No doubt warn is a better winch but the truth is I'll maybe only use it a couple times a year so 3x the price just didn't work for me. The rough country is probably fine too. They even sell a 13K winch that looks very similar to the badlands 12K now and it comes with a wireless remote.

RC winch had quite a few complaints. Loud, slow, and no wireless option..for close to the same amount of money.

Honestly, I didn’t realize it was going to be so much work to make it fit. If I would have known, I would have done the RC.

I'm not that worried about the noise, as long as it works... it's not like I'm going to use it all that much I mostly want it for those just in case moments! LoL

Anyone know if the new 13k RC winch works with the hidden winch mount on the ‘22s?

I think it might. Their website doesn't say. Looks like it follows a similar footprint to their 12K winch though. The end with the clutch and gears looks shorter than the Badlands so it would probably clear the bracket. They control box on top has a crazy load sensing LED system built in to it though so might be a bit harder to relocate that compared to the nice square box of the 12K RC winch. maybe it can be taken apart and used with an Amazon relay box like we do with the Badlands.

Maybe @cfoster can let us know. He said he worked for RC.

Oof that would make me even sadder.

Yea, I would definitely go RC if that’s the case.

I reached out to RC and they said it wont fit
Any chance they mentioned specifically why it won’t fit? Or are they saying that because it wasn’t designed with the mount like the 12k is?

Would you go with the badlands apex again if you started all over? I thought the mount and the apex winch. Took the covers off and still hits the mount so either have to cut the edges of mount to make it fit. I didn’t know about cutting the clutch release handle. I heard the badlands is a superior winch to the RC though.

Nope. It’s just too many modifications to make it work, even if it is a little better than the RC winch.
You still have to cut the edge of the mount or planetary housing to fit the winch in.

Then you have to cut the fairlead mount to even turn a cut clutch handle. Also, it hits the power cables on the opposite side so the whole fairlead is canted a bit.

I did have an idea after the fact that might help you. Cut the clutch handle where it makes a 90 with a band saw. Drill, tap and thread both sides for a decently sized piece of thread all that is long enough to clear the bumper. Then put a lock nut on either side of the clutch handle pieces to keep it from turning. You wouldn’t have to alter the fairlead mount and would still be able to turn the handle easy rather than needing pliers

What box did you use for your relay?
