Project Black Cherry

Little update as I'm all about transparency given a lot of you look to my truck for torture testing. I did experience a failure on the APEX steering at the year mark. Had a little shake in the wheel i was trying to track down and found it in the Passenger lower tie-rod end.

I called Chris and he did mention he's seen it and made improvements to the original design. The steering on my Ram (which has been on longer and get's run WAY harder) is still free of failures. Apex sent me a rebuild same day, free of charge. The steering is now rebuilt and realigned and tracking perfectly again.

Upper joints had play but less significant. I rebuilt all joints; only thing i reused was the drag link and tie-rod bar.
Hey, @BLACKCHERRY, does your apex kit make noises while driving on the road? Because mine does. I just had the tie rod bar replaced and I still a bunch of noise.

I guess I need to figure out which end mine is. I installed mine the same time as you (within a week or two), and I’m having the same issue. I just assumed I had worn them out and it was time to replace. I was a bit bummed though as it’s only been 10K miles. I had actual apple with Alex earlier this morning regarding ordering a full set, but wanted to make sure they were the correct parts. I didn’t mention the usage or how new they were though.

This is my issue. I’ve got the same play in the drag link that Dan does. I’m assuming it’s the lower joint though.

I was just under my truck now, and it's the drag link making all the noise. The tie rod bar has play, but does not make as much noise as the drag.
Everything looks good on the drag link. I re-torqued the jam nuts on the drag link, and it's still making noise.

Same. I gave it a good twist, and it was the culprit. The jam nuts hadnt backed out any either.

Yeah my APEX draglink is super loud as well, don't recall having this much noise on my other truck with PMF offroad Hiem on the Draglink. Thinking about ditching the apex and switch to the PMF. Just need to work out getting the Carli Upper stabilizer to work on the PMF Draglink.

Here's a quick update on this: The noise I was chasing turned out to be the bottom shock mount bolts. After asking for help on this annoying noise from my local dealer, local off-road shop, and others, I took it to the tire shop I've been using for years, and they put it on the alignment rack and started checking every bolt. The driver's and passenger's sides were loose and were moving up and down, making a clunking noise. Alignment guy tightened them, and we went on a drive, and the noise was gone. I was so happy! That, plus a new apex drag/tie rods, fixed it all.

We need more awareness on this topic.

Perhaps I need to create a thread simply on this subject since I am directly affected by this due to my line of work.

I am constantly going through my rig and making sure every nut and bolt is torqued to spec because of this same issue.

I spent weeks after weeks chasing this same symptom only to come to the same conclusion and if I could share my experience to everyone, I would.

Not sure how you use your rig or if its a common issue with our rigs but I cannot emphasize how important is it to do a routine check on the undercarriage and suspensions components at least once a year to ensure everything is torqued to spec.

See post #6 with my anecdote.

Dumb question, but is there a list for our rigs what the difference torque specs are?

From factory? I would be reluctant to say no.

However, due to the fact that 80% of the forum modifies their rig in terms of suspensions components, most if not all those new components do come with torque specs.

It would take one to put together a list of some sort, depending on your specific suspension modifications.

Just this last weekend I went through my radius arms bolts. They're stock radius arms with aftermarket drop brackets so I pulled the drop bracket torque specs from online and matched all bolts to that same spec. Thankfully, they were all to spec.

And since we're on the subject and this is Carli's thread (so to speak), here is another observation I picked up (as I haven't stressed enough aboug going through everything with a fine-tooth comb), sway bar end links:

I have the V.1 which have these sets screws on the joint ends to prevent them from unscrewing.

Guess what?

The set screws went missing. :sneaky:

I went to ACE Hardware and picked out some generic set screws, dabbed on some loctite and screwed them in place.

We'll see how long this lasts.

You pay the price when you use your rig.

The never-ending story....

Pretty much every torque spec will be in the FSM for your model year. They are not cheap from Helm but being able to get the proper disassembly/assembly procedure and torque values makes things much easier.

I was looking at the 7 light linkable in my future.....did you have a problem with the lights blocking the camera?
Others run this setup and should be able to comment on this as well. @Vermonster ??

I just didn't like it. I could see it in the camera, yes - but the light output was underwhelming and i didn't like the adjustments or bracketry. I went to the 40" on a light bar and it was great, but now I'm on (5) LP6 on a light bar. This is the best setup yet, but it does block the camera.

Too me....the linkable kit just looks better but as you said it might not pass enough light. Do you have any pics on how it looked in the camera? Also curious on the lenses you had in your lights. As you know....way to many variables for this.

Still love the look of your truck!
