They're really not... You need to completely neglect them to have an issue. I pulled mine off to test the new style and my original links (without the set screws) are in perfect shape after 70K miles of use. I've greased them a couple times in that duration and, when i greased them, checked the caps to ensure they were tight. They're in perfect shape aside from being dirty.
I am not saying you're wrong, maybe some are more finicky than others, but I've only seen the issue once in person and it was on Sage Carli's truck. He completely neglected them and it took 50K for his to have an issue. All parts were there, so i cleaned them and reinstalled them and he's good 10K later.
