Fuel Pump recalls - 2020-2022 Models

To me it's a "fear of god" level of failure - and that helps people justify spending coin on the prevention kit. I know it's discussed to exhaustion all over the interwebs, but I think I have only seen a few who have actually had an unplanned failure. I feel like one member here has? Am I remembering that correctly?

No doubt it CAN happen, and when it does, it's painful. You'd almost think there would be a service interval to replace it anyway. So far I have not been able to convince myself to pull the trigger on 2K in parts and then install it - and I likely would have a tech do it because I am not sure I trust my lifetime education of shade tree mechanic.

If the 295k was over three production years, lets round up to 12k trucks with issues. So that's 4k trucks per production year. So round up 295k to 300k, that's out of 100k trucks produced in a year 4k were failing. :unsure::unsure:

Combine that with known operator error, introducing DEF into the fuel, bad fuel from supplier, etc....root cause analysis would point to some design flaw that seems to be exacerbated by certain conditions often introduced outside the design considerations IMO

We can suggest that's what Ford has done. Removing the operator, DEF, and bad fuel from those numbers. Which anyone would say those elements ARE NOT part of the design parameters/considerations.

Wow, that's a lot to digest. May l ask why your even a part of this forum if you don't value and or have the ability to value its content. Trust me if you had done your due diligence on the cp4 vs DCR, it is very clear the design flaws that cp4 has and has been documented by numerous 3rd party sources. Just do some research on your own since you don't seem to trust forum content.
Like I said, I have no problem being wrong about this, but where’s the data? If what you say is true, that there’s so much out there…where is it? Can you link me to a study beyond isolated Internet forum truck owner examples? Something with an ACTUAL sample size greater than could be within the margin of error?

For instance, in post #124 I linked a video where a couple guys were lab testing diesel additives. Sure, on the bottle they all say the same kind of stuff, and on the internet you’ll find plenty of guys who swear by each one even though they don’t know why. Does their truck run any better than mine?

These guys whose video I linked gets down to it. Which ones raise cetane the most, have the best lubricity, cost per gallon treated against the other properties etc. That’s REAL data, by a third party lab as they’re testing the chemical signatures of the products.

Where is this with CP4 vs DCR? How about RP7 vs RP8 CP4?

😆, why should I do the work? It's out there, go for it. I'm satisfied, I have done my research. Had you approached this a bit more diplomatically possibly more folks would be offering what your looking for.

Have you watched their video? Again, if someone points to anything like that about CP4 vs DCR, or RP7 vs RP8, I'll stand corrected. The crickets are deafening though.

Look, I'm not saying on it's surface the S&S design doesn't look simpler and more robust. However, shiny things aside, have there been any actual studies. The internet is FULL of conjecture about this, guys showing the internals, talking trash on CP4 etc, but that's it.

@adrummingdude : The real answer is NO. NO ONE will have the "actual" data you want cause it's not going to be cheap to get it. Then why not get it....well the internet takes it and uses it for themselves. DO you REALLY think a guy paid $4000 out of his own pocket for testing??? NAH.....he's got money from some other source paying his way. Don't be fooled.

Anyway....the data IS NEVER going to be out in the open as you think.
 
In the end, if you want to spend your money on what might happen, and could happen, but not very likely considering the numbers, go for it. Kind of like life insurance, isn’t it? It doesn’t work until you die. But until then, I’ll add my additive and my extended warranty will cover my expenses if I’m one of those unlucky owners whose Tremor is chosen for fuel pump failure that day!

I wonder if they are rolling out announcements. Seems like it would be all at once - I too still have no recall shown, but I was hoping it was a 2022 thing. Sounds like it's not.

According to TFL

The automaker will mail notices out to affected truck owners between January 13 and 17, 2025. Dealers are already aware of the recall campaign, as of Thursday, January 2.

They are talking pre covid when they mention 2019

Between October 18, 2019 and November 12, 2024, Ford says it received 3,070 warranty claims, 498 field reports and 58 customer service reports associated with failing Bosch CP4 RP7 fuel pumps. The company decided to formally issue a recall to address the problem on December 13, 2024.

Which trucks are affected and what’s the fix?

Ford’s language covering the defect notes that, “Over time, aged biodiesel deposits can form on internal high-pressure fuel pump components, which may lead to failure of the pump and can result in a loss of motive power.”

According to the NHTSA recall report (number 24V-957, Ford recall number 24S78), the campaign covers these specific 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel-equipped trucks:

  • 2020-2022 F-Series Super Duty (F-250 to F-600) built between Feburary 19, 2019 and August 23, 2021:
    • 2020 model year: 149,180 units
    • 2021 model year: 120,597 units
    • 2022 model year: 16,361 units
  • 2021-2022 Ford F-650 and F-750 built between May 14, 2019 and August 23, 2021:
    • 2021 model year: 5,361 units
    • 2022 model year: 3,950 units

 
All the people I know that have 6.7l powerstrokes, only one had a CP4 failure (2015) and he bought his fuel from questionable souce. Some of these trucks are work trucks that are abused and driven by multiple employees. Not saying that the part is not problematic or as robust as needed (personally feel it should be able to handle a little bit of bad fuel without destroying it), but how many of these trucks with failures are maintained correctly. I change my fuel filter every 10,000 miles and drain the water separator with every oil change. Unfortunately you just can't ignore maintenance on these modern diesels, like you could with the old 7.3l powerstroke.

Personally I am not going to allow them to do this recall unless they can explain to me how a program update is going fix possible pump deposits.

This sounds like the fuel injector recall on the 2.0l ecoboost motors, known faulty injector design that can cause a fire and Ford's answer is a program update to detect fuel pressure loss and stop the vehicle from running and gutters to allow fuel to drain around hot components, I had to laugh when I read that. At least the NHTSA said that the repair was not adequate.

It was being said they want to control the temp of the fuel. So however that's to be managed by PCM and sensors it's what they can do.

Now....NO. I suspect we will NEVER REALLY know how or what is happening with the PCM magic. SO let's stop asking the question as if somehow on the 1,000th time of asking we get a 100% verifiable answer. Stop expecting to get an answer, let's be happy IF we actually get an honest answer.
 
This is why I do not want it, so if the fuel heats up do to deposits, you are going to get less power, no thank you (when really you need a new CP4). Below is the is explanation of how ECM adjusts do to fuel temp, very interesting. And what about all the 2011-19 trucks, oh that's right they aren't under warranty anymore, won't hurt Ford's bottom line.

Yes, the ECM (Engine Control Module) on a 6.7L Powerstroke engine does control fuel temperature by monitoring the integrated fuel pressure and temperature sensor within the fuel system, allowing it to adjust fuel injection parameters to maintain optimal fuel temperature levels; effectively managing the heat of the fuel throughout the engine operation.

Key points about how the ECM manages fuel temperature:
  • Sensor input:
    The ECM receives data from the fuel temperature sensor, which is integrated with the fuel pressure sensor in the high-pressure fuel system.

  • Injection adjustments:
    Based on the fuel temperature reading, the ECM can adjust fuel injection timing and duration to either cool down the fuel by injecting smaller amounts or heat it up by injecting larger amounts as needed.

  • Overall engine management:
    This fuel temperature control is part of the ECM's larger responsibility to optimize engine performance, including power delivery, emissions, and fuel efficiency
