Fuel Pump recalls - 2020-2022 Models

Oaky Alex I'll take "Let's monitor our Fuel Temp" for the next few days. I'd expect anyone with a OBD-II device to do the same. Cause it's why we are all here to share info, and experiences. If you don't you are just a strap hanger. So saddle up, and get with the program.


Not to mention my late build '22 falls outside the expected notice dates for the recall (at this date/time no notifications in app or by mail) . Which should mean the PCM and HPFP have been updated/improved. BTW If I'm lacking power I can't tell.

11/22 on the door sticker. (some parts stickers show a late November 2022 date).
 
12/9/21 for my 22. Will be interesting if I see anything.
 
I will submit my fuel temp info next time I drive a significant distance.

I will check my temp (via iDash) but what kind of info are we looking for specifically? Distance driven, time driven, ambient temp, type of traffic?

These trucks already have a fuel cooler installed. What's needed to understand is the impacts of fuel temperature on performance. But hey...who's going to spend the money to figure that out? Easy answer....no one here.


When was RP8 implemented?
From Ford :
On August 23, 2021, the RP7 pump was replaced in production with the RP8 variant, which implemented a design robustness action that increased the pump´s roller shoe and tappet body clearances for improved fuel flow to increase cooling in the tappet area.
 
Personally I am hoping that by the time my warranty runs out, we will have a better idea whether the RP8 variant is less likely to grenade then the RP7. That would help me make the final decision re a DPK. Currently, I am leaning towards the DPK.
 
@HeavyAssault i might be able to help a little with fuel temp from my 6.4L days. The truck was a daily 775rwhp setup with dual fuelers, fuel temp was important to watch and I constantly did. For low temps I have a fass high out heater that kicks on at 34F degrees and I believe shut off around the 45-50F degree mark. As far as cooling, that would kick on around 94-96F degrees. I think this gives you some insight to the optimal fuel temp being 50-90F degrees. I will say i had dealt with a tuning glitch as well that would kick on a depowered mode at 116F. The glitch was always super funny to watch as the K16 struggles to properly regulate fuel pressure at 116F and over 10K FRP. The "limp mode", slightly less power and limited to 2250rpms, would kick on. Fuel temp would continue to rise on high ambient temp days, 120+, and the pump had no issue controlling FRP above 10k psi all the way to the system max of 26K-29K psi(tune dependant). Clearly some sort of glitch at that one temp as it could perform fine above that temp. But cross the 116F mark and you'd get a P0088. General concensus back then was to stay below 120F for fuel and anything over 130F was concerning. High ambient temp days were the hardest for this system as the Delta between ambient and desired fuel temp shrinks.

I know a 6.4L isn't a direct comparison to our 6.7Ls, but hopefully this helps!

295k trucks at a failure rate of 4% says 11,800 trucks had a fate we don't want to speak of.:oops::oops:

If the 295k was over three production years, lets round up to 12k trucks with issues. So that's 4k trucks per production year. So round up 295k to 300k, that's out of 100k trucks produced in a year 4k were failing. :unsure::unsure:

4k trucks SPREAD OUT over just the lower 48 states says 83.333 (round up to 84) PER STATE average. 84 per production year times 3 production years says 252 trucks PER STATE (lower 48) will fail. :unsure::unsure:

252 trucks....PER state. If that math is right it's PRETTY low per state rate. BTW I'm no math genius so feel free to double check it. I won't have any personal anxiety over it. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
And don’t forget to add all the CP4 failures that were never reported to Ford because they were done by independent shops. I’ve talked to numerous shop owners who say they’ve replaced more CP4s than the rate Ford is reporting. The 4% number is reported by Ford. Those numbers are logged when taken into a dealership so there are far more failures than 4%. Is it significantly more? No one knows since they aren’t tracked but I assure you it happens more than 4%. Talk to any shop owner that replaces them.

What isn’t included in your numbers is the cause of the failures. Meaning how many of the failures were related to human error 🤔 vs wear and tear, or mechanical.

That might be true. Nobody knows. But the design of the pump is fragile in that sense. On the DCR for example, the parts internally are in separate chambers so if there’s a failure of the pump the pump just stops working - you don’t have metal fragments ruining your fuel system. It’s just a better pump design all around. If you run bad fuel, water, etc. on a CP4 then there’s a possibility maybe even a probability of disaster.
