Fuel Pump recalls - 2020-2022 Models

So am I understanding this correctly? If you have a 22' (or late production '21) we already have the new pump revision, just old PCM software?

Thankfully I can do the update myself and don't need to hassle with the dealership.

@Vermonster @BullmansF250 : Thanks fior sharing the additional info. I believe if we learn more about issue in whole, we learn more about how to combat the potential problems.

@pkrexer : My thoughts are along with yours; yes the chances are the new pump is already installed so only the PCM programming will be needed. Now the effects of the new PCM programming will need to be watched as well. We all hope there's no ill effects long term to any power or MPGs.

...The process of removing sulfur to meet the ULSD standards removes other compounds that used to naturally help diesel fuel repel water.

Read this recently.......
Unfortunately diesel owners often get screwed by shortsighted environmental policies. If government is going to pass legislation that reduces the sulfur content of diesel they also need to include follow-on legislation that requires auto manufacturers to ensure their diesel engines and components are able to function reliably running the new modified fuel. The CP4 is designed for higher sulfur European diesel fuel.

Here is my take, I have the DPK installed. If my cp4 goes out I will then go with DCR. With the DPK no collateral damage to the fuel system. My cp4 may never fail.
I think you have the right idea here.

One of the main reason we are ripping the CP4 out is because we travel in this truck for month, and if the CP4 blows while we are traveling, the hotel/flight/rental car costs will be higher than what it costs to put the DCR in. Other than that, I know that we will at some point find shit diesel overseas and the CP4 just cant handle it.

I know many Super Duty owners with high mileage CP4s still going. I also know a few that had theirs shit the bed before even 40k and naturally they were either towing a 40ft trailer somewhere out of town, or it was one of their trucks required for their business to continue to run and having a truck go down for weeks was a disaster.

To each their own, but if you have other cars and dont rely on the truck daily for work or lifestyle, throw in a DPK and take the chance.

The way we hyperfixate on CP4 disasters, you'd think this happens to members on the daily. When I read these threads I feel like I am waiting to be stuck by lightening. I sure hope nothing happens to my truck, and I am not running anything beyond stock set-up. I am basically doing what @HeavyAssault outlined. Though, I do not run fuel additive often - only during cold snaps. I feel like receiving fuel from high volume places is cheap insurance. It's when you get stupid and use the heavy equipment aux tank that's been sitting for three seasons in the yard. :P
I totally agree, you would think cp4 on this forum were failing daily. I have rarely heard of forum member cp4 failures. Install a DPF, if the cp4 fails then Install a DCR. There are hundreds of thousands of cp4 with 100,000 + miles with no failures.

Does anyone know or it is documented by the fabricator how much will the filter collect in the case of a catastrophic failure?

Is it 100% or are there still particles that can flow into the fuel system?

S&S, the company who designed the DCR and the DPK actually intentionally set up a cp4 to fail while pulling a heavy trailer on the road to a show. The truck was equipped with a DPK. All this was done on purpose to test the effectiveness of the DPK. When the cp4 failed while pulling the trailer the performance was diminished but did not cause catastrophic failure. They simply disconnected the trailer and continued another 200 miles with the comprised cp4. While at the show thier techs replaced the failed cp4 and installed the DCR, engine started up functioned normally, no damage downstream from the failed cp4. So to answer your question the filter was 100% effective in this instance. What puts you on the side of the road with a cp4 failure is the damage downstream when you don't have a DPK. There is a video produced by S&S documenting all i have shared.

I do have a recall for this. My truck, is an early 21', ordered 1/2021, took delivery 3/21. Makes no sense as my truck never sat in a railyard nor was affected by any COVID delay nonsense. Seems fishy to me!
Very interesting.

I’ve watched a couple videos on that, pretty cool. I have a few friends with the DPK and know some very high mileage CP4’S and know of a couple early failures. It really comes down to keeping clean fuel and draining the water separator. My friend installed his DPK, he told me that since everything is coming off just do the DCR. I’m on the fence. I may just do the DCR…

FYI for the thread - I now have the recall showing up on FordPasss app and confirmed by the dealer - 2021 6.7, April 21 2021 build date and sat the the speedway until mid-August when I took delivery. As others have mentioned- interesting to see where this goes.

The DCR was available when I did my DPK, my diesel shop mentioned the exact thing. This was my reasoning 🤔, my cp4 may never fail, but if it does based on history, the DPK will save everything downstream and at that time I will install a DCR. If you do timely routine maintenance, clean fuel, an additive regularly, the overwhelming odds are your cp4 will not fail.

The only reason I am highly considering the DCR at this moment is because I am tearing everything out for a full MPD piping kit that I have had on the shelf for a year now.

Just took my 22 6.7 Tremor with only 23,900 miles on it ( I have a company car for daily use) in for an oil change and service. Figured I’d wait for 2 hours at dealer.

They tried to update multiple things, and this is what I got after they sent me home with a loaner….

HERE WE GO, THIS IS DIRECTLY FROM THE TECHNICIAN: "UPDATED THE APIM MODULE SOFTWARE UPDATE

Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) is an essential component in modern vehicles that controls and communicates various vehicle accessories and features

UPDATED THE GATEWAY MODULE SOFTWARE UPDATE

module ensures communications between the controller area network (CAN) bus and devices and tools that utilize the onboard diagnostic port.

UPDATED DDM (DRIVER DOOR MODULE) SOFTWARE UPDATE

UPDATED DSM (DRIVER FRONT SEAT MODULE) SOFTWARE UPDATE

ALSO TRIED POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE CONFIGURATION AND MODULE INSTALLATION, ALSO DID NOT WORK"

They still have truck, and are revisiting Monday….anyone else experience this?

Im considering ordering a bunch of DCRs. Let me know if S&S DPK or DCRs would be something youd order.

Sounds like your truck had a bunch of updates that needed done, which is not abnormal. All the modules you listed are ones I've updated on my 22', myself.

The update that this thread is talking about (related to the fuel pump) hasn't been released yet, as far as I'm aware.

I would pull it out of there as quick as possible.

They're "fixing" what's not broken!

Do the DCR if you think it's worth it. Your cost is going to be a minor addition to labor for the additional work. After the fact it's doing double work.

DCR is going to be the diesel bitcoin for 2025. No one is going to want to stay with the CP4. Ford is going to hang people out to dry on CP4 failures w/DPK. Likely to say the DPK is the problem. Then you got the crowd that's going to try (or retry) the whole class-action lawsuit route. It's going to be on the owners 100%.
