DEF jug vs pump

Then why are you talking about it on a superduty thread?
Oh shit are we only allowed to talk about super duty trucks here and nothing else to add context to our opinions?

Dude read the whole thread. The conversation was about premium def and its value or harm. I was just adding my experience and trying to give some context about what it was based on.

So far I've only used jugs and I'm very careful about the mfg date. I like the cheap Super Tech stuff from Wal-Mart because not only do they sell craploads of it which means the stock on hand is always fresh, just days or a few weeks old, but the mfg date is printed right on the back in plain English, no cryptic codes like Blue DEF. It's also $8.88 for a 2.5 gallon jug, cheapest I've ever seen anywhere.

I found out there's one station with a DEF pump in town and I need to recheck the price because when I saw they had a pump and drove by to check it out, I swear I recall DEF being $6.99/gallon there. At that price, I'll just keep using Super Tech.

When I do some longer distance traveling, I'll be filling from pumps out of practical concerns but I'll fill where I get fuel; at the busiest, newest most populated truck stops I can find on the interstate which should also have the freshest product..

Something to consider when traveling: The big 3 nation wide truckstop chains jack up their prices, especially on fuel. Regional chains and smaller local places will almost always have better prices.

It isn't uncommon to see a big chain and a local station across the street from each other with a $0.80/Gal price difference on diesel. Saw some in Georgia today where a pilot was $3.75 and then found a QuikTrip at the next exit for $2.99. Both had truck pumps with DEF though.

$8.88 is a pretty good price. Most truck stops are going to be around $4-4.5 these days.

Thanks, this is helpful. I'll be looking into the merits of getting an Open Roads card and maybe using a price tracking website or two before I set out on any trips next year.

I only wish I had gotten my open roads card when I got the truck. I got it at the beginning of this year and so far I've saved over $400 on about 1000 gallons of fuel. It's pretty much free money since I would be paying with my debit card anyways and they just ACH off the same account.

The big decider was when I saw they support Kwik Trip in WI since they are pretty much everywhere and a large number of them have truck pumps.

Most of the jugs I'm around are pumped up to the fullest and are very expensive 🤪.

I go to the pump. It's less hassle than buying and storing jugs. I also make sure to wipe the nozzle clean with a cleaning wipe because I don't want to risk contamination.

I get mine from one of the local truck stops at the pump.

Just relaying some info I have received in the past. You do you….i drive 3-4000k miles a month so I go through a lot of DEF and fuel and don’t worry about buildup because I’m constantly driving
I appreciate the info. I will keep an eye on it. Do you know what problems they were seeing and what brand/age/mileage of the trucks?

The pump at the truckstop is cheaper, fresher, way less likely to spill, & easier to measure DEF consumption.
This. DEF at the pump is fine -- just make sure it's a high volume station (i.e. Truck Stop, Travel Center, Buc-ees)

I can usually put in 5gals of DEF for the same price of one 2.5gal box and not worry about spilling that highly corrosive crap all over the place.

Hey everyone just wanted to get everybody's thoughts on whether you use DEF out of a jug or from the pump at the gas station pros and cons and what have you. My thoughts are maybe better from the pump because if for some reason something happens and it's caused by Def and your warranty doesn't cover it you may be able to get the station to cover it where you bought the stuff if you can prove that you bought it there . Thanks
If you are worried about quality at the pumps, and how long it’s been sitting in the heat at the store, just buy it from Ford parts, or stop at the shop. Then you have the receipts and they’ll even pour it in for you. Keep them responsible for the maintenance, if you ever have a claim you have worked with them exclusively.

I’ve been cautious of buying at the pump due to risk of contamination. I haven’t studied DEF enough to know saturation point etc… I was worried about too much crystallization at the nozzle end and then adding to the tank and not all of it going back into solution. I might be overthinking it a bit. But the new pumps looks like they are a bit more sanitary than the older ones.

Yeah, Im a truck driver that uses DEF at the pump in my rig and I know what you mean. There is a build-up of crystalized DEF on the tip of the nozzle a lot of times. I have yet to have to put DEF in my pickup, but if I do, I will make sure to wipe all that off before dispensing.

I’m on Team Juggs.

None of the local fuel stations have DEF at the pump.

I also only drive my Tremor to my daughter’s dance studio and to lululemon, so I don’t burn much DEF 🤣🤣

What happened!?
What do you mean by "what happened?"

Haha, you may be actually generating def fluid as you drive and park in those locales. Wonder if you could sell the extra to the others in this thread? ;)

Haha, not a thing at all - just messing around.

On a serious note, I do buy the 2.5gal DEF cans, mainly out of necessity given my local fuel joints don’t have DEF at the pump.

And my Tremor is my daily driver, and I use it like a truck should be used anytime it’s needed.

Daughter just turned 16 last week so I have now made my last commute to the studio and/or mall!!

🍻 to that!

Now to the added expense of another vehicle, insurance, the constant food/drink/entertainment purchases, and waiting up along with worrying for her to get home safely. Ask me how I know. Better schedule another crown or two.
