DEF jug vs pump

I get DEF Blue Platinum jugs from HD. Maybe a waste of money for "premium" DEF but the extra $5-6 a jug every few thousand miles isn't a big deal. I rather fill up with jugs at home so I never have my DEF cap and diesel cap off at the same time. Jugs also have serial numbers that you can decode and see when it was manufactured. The two that I just bought was made six weeks ago.
Actually that has an additive that stops allot of crystallization. A few people on YouTube have done tests on it. I run it and decode the numbers to get the freshest I can, plus Menards runs 11% rebate.

I use the box DEF with the Ford nozzle that prevents over filling. I want to know what the date code is and do not want to deal with filling DEF while fueling.

I agree, and good choice on that motocraft def nozzle, well designed product. I know a guy that sells and delivers def, it’s in a large trailer that sits outside. I know a few people that got bad def from him (heat kills the shelf life).

IF the following is true :
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) storage tanks at fuel stations can vary in size, but can range from 205 gallons to 2,100 gallons.

Then...one must consider the potential of containments, poor quality of storage, cross-contamination at some point .....right?? But then how would you know if your recent trip to the DEF pump was the problem or the jug you used (for those who use both). I'd think most people when traveling would use a pump, while at home they use a box.

1) DEF pumps really aren't a common thing at the local stations where I am.
2) I'll just use jugs every 5k miles (or so).

Jugs for me....maybe not for thee.....but then thee can do what thee do....I'll do jugs. 😜😜🍻🍻

Pump. About $15 to fill the DEF all the way up here. Can fill the Diesel at the same time. I only buy a box when towing the camper cross country for emergency use. I pass 2 stations with DEF on the way home every day. I can understand people using the box if there is not a close station. Otherwise, it would not make any sense to me.

Be careful with the “premium” blue def. I have had a few diesel mechanics that tell me to NEVER use it. Mainly because when they have newer trucks come to the shop a lot of them are using the “premium” def. There is some sort of additive in it that seems to cause problems….just what I have been told.

I also use the pump as much as I can when I’m on the road. If I am anywheee near 50% on my def gauge and cross a truck stop I pull off and fill up with Def. It’s cheaper and easier in my opinion

When I had a diesel, I would use the pump whenever I could, but kept a jug in the truck bed in case I ever needed it.

I always use the pump. I’m fortunate to have a station nearby that takes the open road fleet card and has def at the pump. When traveling I stop at truck stops which always have def at the pump. The box option is a great backup.

I’ve got about 5k miles on using platinum def and no issues. There are lots of threads on this forum and others of people saying it does work in preventing crystal buildup.

Just relaying some info I have received in the past. You do you….i drive 3-4000k miles a month so I go through a lot of DEF and fuel and don’t worry about buildup because I’m constantly driving

Unless you are leaving your truck sit for extended periods of time with the def cap off and the tank already nearly empty the def in the tank isn't going to crystallize. Whatever small amount of def crystals that do form on the walls of the tank will dissolve as soon as you refill the tank. If I was going to leave my truck sit for like 6+ months I would just top it off before parking and maybe go try to fill it again when I got back to be sure just in case.

I go through probably 5-10 gallons a day in my work truck and have purchased thousands if not 10s of thousands of gallons of def at this point. The majority of large commercial trucks use def from a pump. If crystallization was such a huge issue it would be known.

Premium def is special only because some marketing guy figured out they could charge more if they wrote "Premium" on the box.

No way...
25 Gallon tank and I put 10-15 gallons in every 2 days. Only get like 2-3 mpg when trying to drag 130K+ lbs down the highway.

My F250 lasts about 3K miles when towing and 7K miles otherwise. Last fillup for the F250 was end of June and it's still at about 65% with 3500 miles to go but I've done some towing since then. Haven't driven my F250 in almost a month though since I have been working.

The DEF tank is like 8 gallons...
