Connected Navigation Subscription Required

Once my 3 months period expires on my lariat i will purchase the navigation subscription. Yeah, it’s that good, i’ve been running it along waze and gmaps, it’s about as accurate as those apps for me. I don’t see it as a big deal, not sure why everyone is so upset about paying for it annually. You pay for cable, phone, internet and this somehow is different? The same folks who shell out $$,$$$ on other mods, this one is a problem. OK.
Honestly, the money isn't the issue for me as you said, it's peanuts in the grand scheme of things... I guess the engineer in me wants consistency and this is the first vehicle for which I have encountered the pay-for-nav feature so my initial reaction was to revolt. 2nd encounter was with our Bronco and I am already getting used to the idea. :p

That being said I have been using Google maps and it works fine through Android Auto. I also purchased a Garmin RV890 and don't see the "why buy" of continuing the Ford system since I have other options.

Can’t you just plug your phone in and display a map on the screen?

Automakers will never compete with open source, or at least publicly available, dedicated navigation apps

You can still use the factory map as map even with an expired subscription - you just can't use it for nav/turn-by-turn directions. You can use your phone via Android Auto or Apple Carplay on the factory screen and then the navigation app of your choice - Google Maps, Waze

It was easy to subscribe at the end of trial period, don’t remember exact (online) process, but simple. Think it was $70-80/yr., not a major purchase for a Tremor owner. Don’t let a perception of “principle” get in the way of a good service, it’s a moderate dinner for two for a year. Just my opinion, may not be shared by all so don’t shoot!

I never used it when I had the free trial, but got several reminder emails from Ford letting me know it expired and asking me to renew it. I am just comfortable with G maps, it s linked to my G account, and it is free. Plus, I look at the map before I leave home and basically memorize my route in most cases. If the connected nav offered something above and beyond what is free, then I might consider it. I at for Sirius radio because I travel a lot in the boondocks and don’t get good radio or phone reception.

I’m with @Alpoba and @NitroTremor. I’ve experimented with google, Apple and Ford sync maps over the past month on the road. My personal experiences proved the native navigation to be superior to the other two for my needs. The turn by turn voice can be a bit intrusive at times, but it’s a simple mute when I don’t want it. I’ll pay for it when the time comes, as I’m after the best navigation experience and find the cost to be a moot point.

Several other parts of the service I use regularly are the live weather radar overly of your location, gas stations and food along your route (uses current location for nearby options). Nothing you can’t do with other platforms, but nice to have right there on the big screen.

I called the number given on the expiration notice and asked about any available discounts or the possibility of a lifetime subscription. Unfortunately the answer was no to both. Will probably just stick to carplay and google maps.

The messed up part of this entire thing is if you build a truck online and submit it the online builder says nothing about it being a trial. It just states one of the features if the lariat ultimate package as "Voice-activated Navigation System with HD and SiriusXM Satellite Radio".

Exactly, I had no idea until I read this thread.

My connected nav system randomly started working again this morning, fully featured - I also noticed it included the trailer routing feature that appears to be hit or miss whether it is present on Superduties. I didn't subscribe after my trial ended. Shhh don't tell Ford.

Mine has happened to work randomly here and there. Times that when my android auto gives me fits I switch to this and it seems to be working more often then not.

But no trailer routing on the super duty.

Yeah, it worked on my drive to work but was back to not working on the way home. When it worked it did have the trailer routing option but I don't have a trailer so I wasn't able to mess around with it to see if it would actually function. I'm not sure if I subscribed if that feature would reappear but it did appear as shown in my screenshot.

Everyone from Adobe photoshop to BMW heated to now my onboard map! Are you kidding me, I have to pay to put a waypoint in my truck! This is just wrong, unless I am wrong, that really pisses me off.
Please someone tell me I am wrong,
Thanks

Nope, that's the way it is now unfortunately... The map is still usable as a map, no more, no less.

Some have chosen to pay the $80/yr. I bought a standalone Garmin RV GPS, which I wanted anyway for when we get a TT. For non towing usage I just use Google Maps via Android Auto when necessary. I really don't use Nav that often so it wasn't a big deal to me. The idea of it bothered me more than the actual impact.

I agree it's frustrating especially for the cost to buy the truck. Good thing it has android auto or car play. I'd say so but it as the features are not worth it and the only way to stop companies from these practices is not to buy in.

Unfortunately you are not wrong. I paid for it - Carplay can duplicate the built in nav system functionality but for Carplay to work you have to enable Siri and location services on your phone, 2 features I prefer to leave turned off. I also prefer the Ford nav interface. I wish they'd come out with a lifetime subscription option - fundamentally I just don't like having to subscribe to features and would pay a couple more bucks just to have it work permanently.
