Connected Navigation Subscription Required

I actually buy actual paper maps from USFS, USGS, BLM, state maps and forest maps along with the tech stuff. Guess I’m revealing my age here, but I have a cartographer wife who can find her way out of or to just about anywhere. She can also read a compass! I agree that we’re getting screwed by Ford on this. They can so they will.

Maybe it's just me, but the Ford nav is clunky at best, and I seem to have a hard time finding POIs, which I hardly ever do with Google, Waze or Apple Maps. I will definitely not be paying this subscription.

For those using RV GPSs, is it really worth the cost? I have traveled across the country and never got myself into an area I couldn't navigate. But maybe there are certain areas of the country where there are more issues for RVs than others?
Take a trip on I-10 to far West Texas and your phone maps will no longer work. The phone calls work on analog, but all digital apps lose connectivity. My RV GPS has never failed me.

EDIT: I never use the on board navigation, so I do not worry about their subscription fees.

What’s so special about west Texas & phones not working

In Colorado, Wyoming and Montana when away from population centers or in the mountains you loose cell signal as well as GPS signal being blocked by mountains and/or trees& overhead cover. We have hit the mountains & not had a GPS signal for days and had to hike to a opening with a good clear view of the sky to use a Sat phone a friend had

I’ve learned to never depend on GPS as when you do it fails just like any technology

Who said anything was special about Texas? He said he traveled across the country without ever losing a signal, so I suggested he ride through west Texas. Nothing special, just a data point.

I traveled from Texas to Yellowstone and back through all of the states you mentioned and I never once lost my GPS signal due to mountains or tree cover. Maybe I was lucky…

IMHO: This are extreme conditions which > 90% never will experience. In an width open area a GPS has a much better connections than a cell signal, in a big city with sky scrapers a cell signal is better than a GPS.... and and and...

And when you used the Sat phone from a friend, you rely on a satellite, as well. Technology at its best.

You are absolutely correct. The original comment asked if an RV GPS was worth it, and he mentions hiking up a mountain which caused him to lose Cell and GPS signal. The last time I checked, there are not many RVs which will allow you to get to a point on a mountain where a GPS signal is not possible and even fewer people who might go there with their Tremors.

I agree it's frustrating especially for the cost to buy the truck. Good thing it has android auto or car play. I'd say so but it as the features are not worth it and the only way to stop companies from these practices is not to buy in.
we prob shouldn't had bought the truck then.....

Yeah, but imagine having to pay for software updates on your phone.
Ford Sync software updates are free, so is the use of Nav GPS/maps.

You pay for live traffic/reroute options, live weather/radar, live POI based on location (food/fuel/etc.). Seems fair to me.

Again, imagine having to pay for these options that are available on your phone for with free updates.

For me, yes. I want travel across the states and will avoid freeways when ever I can because that's the reason for my journey.
My truck with TT will be around 20.000 lbs and it's over 11"6 and to avoid impassable streets I will use an RV GPS.
Boondocking whenever wherever is the goal.

I was pissed to find out the Navigation is a subscription. I don't use nav very often so I'm not going to pay for it. The couple times I used Goggle maps through car play it has screwed up. It works fine until I get a phone call or a text then it locks up. Have to unplug phone and restart maps then plug it back it for it to work. Pretty sad how with all of the electronic advances they can't seem to keep the simple crap working!

You pay with your private data.
If I remember correct there was a message like "if you want use the Navigation, you MUST activate Fordpass"?!?

But I also use Waze as well as Apple Maps depending.
I just downloaded Waze and it's already annoying because of messages.
So, I checked the settings and I am shocked about the huge possibilities on settings.
Email notifications... SMS notifications... Voice messages.... WOW.... OK... you can turn off all at once, IF you check the box on top and than scroll down... and scroll.. and scroll....
BUT than I saw this "info .. and ???" WOW WOW WOW..... you need a half day to scroll down.

I guess I will not use Waze, it's a little too much.

But the other apps still on my phone.

I love ford navigation, use it daily on my commutes. So much simpler and cleaner to use. Has been 100% accurate on local traffic, zero issues to date.

And what’s 80$ on an 80K truck - .01% convenience fee i’m happy to pay.
After one year daily commuting I knew the way to the company and home by myself
I would be more then surprised when the nav tells me after months driving suddenly another way o_O

You right, it's only .01% fee.

This remembers me on a rental car bill where I found 10 different fees. Even $0.25 per winter tire... in FLORIDA!!
Or on the invoice from my Ford dealer. Basic order price $88K... highest amount on my invoice (including loan interests) $120K
And THAN I started to became very suspicious, very...

Go a few miles off pavement away from the highway:)

Oh I could tell you stories about trucks and RV’s following gps directions & end up where they should not go

We had GPS in the 1st gulf war, but a map and compass was much more reliable even if it was a photo copy of a old old old outdated map lol

Peoples beliefs in theses devices are bizarre and they totally ignore DOT signs cuz the gps said so

I’ve used it for years and have notifications turned off all but a couple & had no idea they have added so much
