In the south college football is valued more than anywhere else. Losing to a team develops strong negative emotions, especially when championships are involved.

In the south? I’d like to introduce you to Ohio State vs Michigan! Doesn’t get much better (or worse)!than that!!
The difference is teams in the south have multiple games with the intensity of Michigan OSU. There is no rivalry as intense as the iron bowl.

Only the directional schools will play Georgia. UCLA and Louisville canceled games so I end up with tickets to scrimmages. Maybe they are scared….

Those Michigan vs western Michigan games are intense. Storm the field after the refs steal one from a MAC opponent.
Truth is CFB landscape is/has changed due to transfer portal, NIL, and coaching changed. I believe long gone are the days of coaches being there for 10yrs building programs that have a rinse and repeat culture. Not arguing if that’s good or not but just a new truth IMO.
The SEC commissioner Greg Stanley’s change in comments reflect this as the SEC hasn’t been able to get it done in result years via results (nation champions or representation in final game)
This was Greg Sankey at Southeastern Conference media days in 2023: “As a conference we’ve won four straight College Football Playoff national championships, earned by three different teams, and over the past 17 years we’ve had five programs win 13 national college football titles.”
This year at SEC media days: “Our football programs draw an average of 80,000 fans per game. That’s our average number. This was the stat of my summer.”
Notice the drastic change in those messages. His pivot was necessitated by results on the field. When you no longer win the championships, tout the fan turnout. Those bragging rights belong to the SEC’s former punching bag and current nemesis, the Big Ten, which has had 3 different teams capture 3 straight national titles.
It’s one thing when you’re losing to bluebloods Michigan and Ohio State, which went a combined 3–0 in the playoff against SEC teams. When IU comes on and beats lordly Alabama into a pulp in the Rose Bowl, on its way to a 16–0 season, the 9–1–1 call from Dixie and the SEC is legit.
This has not just been a series of narrow misses for the SEC. The league hasn’t placed a team in the CFP title game since 2022, and its playoff record against outside competition over the past three seasons is 3–7—including absolute beatdowns for Alabama and Tennessee at the hands of the last two champions, Indiana and Ohio State. In bowls and playoff games last season, the SEC went 2–7.

Has to quote 2022. Last time SEC played in title games after assuming they would always be there. Current college rules for players allows movement and Big 10 seems to be popular piece everyone is joining. I personally like the big 10 / SEC rivalries this can bring on. Hope programs start scheduling more meaningful out of conf games to prove they are best.
Having lived in Alabama growing up. Before returning to IL (Midwest) I can say as someone with ZERO skin in this that the rivalry is on par. The states response is different given out of state OH and MI. When bama played auburn stores closed and hung their flag for who they backed. I remember being a kid and my mom like it’s Saturday why is this store closed at 10am. We quickly learned that the state pauses for this rivalry…
As someone who just likes college football and sports that was cool to see and 30+ yrs later I remember it like yesterday.
It’s not college football now. It’s a money grab for all involved. The big ten can leverage deep pockets to draw enough talent to win championships.
I have very similar memories growing up in Columbus, and then later going to OSU.
You could run naked down the street shooting a gun in the air that Saturday in November and nobody would know!
College football is pissing me off now, though. Kids leaving programs every year, 100 teams in the Big 10, with half of them on the west coast, recruits going to the highest bidder, etc.

I think they have over corrected. I didn’t like before coaches could leave but players couldn’t. But now it’s too far crazy. I agree.
