No one is saying that CB is what it was back in its hey-days of the '70's or even the '80s. With the proliferation of cell phones and cell-towers, ch.9/REACT is definitely obsolete. And there's no doubt that FRS/GMRS is the rising star now, especially since you can purchase the 'bubble-wrap radios' almost everywhere. While I don't know of any offroad area that actually bans CB use, I do know that most are now requiring FRS/GMRS. Although I haven't ever been to one, I have read Merus' policies because there was going to be a Tremor meet-up there. More people are getting HAM radios than ever before as well, they definitely beat the pants off CB for distance. But when you make absolute assertions that no one uses CB anymore, we can't possibly be hearing what we say we're hearing, or even to imply that they can't be useful, or beneficial to anyone, because of your vast knowledge and experience, we all just read your posts and laugh. Like the politicians that tell us: "Don't believe your lying eyes, believe what we're telling you. We're the experts!" A little humility would go a long way with those you interact with here.

Its not an absolute assertion. It doesnt mean zero. No one took it as that until people like you that wants to think that. But on a scale, no one is using them... thats a fact. Cb shops that were everywhere are gone and hard to find. Why? Cause everyone's still using one? NOPE!

Im in Phoenix, a major interstate, CBs on and its dead silent.. Nope, channel 26 has some spanish on it. this wasnt possible 10 years ago. Ill be in Houston tonight and you can hear the night stalker who is rumored to be in dallas/ft worth area in a base station and Im not sure he ever sleeps. I cannot remember the guy in Vegas and his super powerful radio. But people here him on the east coast at times.

Do you need CB to chat with people in your network with CB? Most I think have moved to GMRS for a lot of benefits. Everyone has their own unique needs, but figured it was worth sharing.

Yes, indeed. I gave up because in the 2 or so years since I’ve joined he’s the most arrogant and offensive individual on this site. Actually, he is the only one. He obviously likes to big note himself and that’s something the rest of us can see.

He clearly is ignorant of what we have here in Oz and what we use. just as I am ignorant of what is in Canada or the US. I do know that decades ago we moved away from the 27Mhz frequency, even though it’s still available. He says we are behind the times despite making the switch away from 27Mhz to UHF when we did. The switch to UHF allowed the use of repeater stations. We then went from 40 channel to 80 channels. The use of ctcss further opened up the airwaves with another 50 or so sub channels per main channel. This is an analogue system, a digital system opens up a further 40 or so sub channels per channel. All of this on UHF CB radio.

So rather than being behind the times, we have a great UHF CB radio scene here. That’s not to say there aren’t idiots out there. But by using the ctcss, you practically eliminate them from being a problem. While I use the CB mainly on the highway when travelling with friends, when you do come into a town or city you don’t hear anyone else except the people you are travelling with. It only becomes a problem when you switch to the truckies channels in built up areas.

Taking the photo did make me realize that it is close to touching the fender so ill need to twist it back clockwise a bit to give it more space. But it's not currently touching.

@DIG I was able to twist the mount and have lots of space again.

I did a bit of reading on the GRMS radios. They are similar to the UHF radios that I first started using in the 1980’s. There are some differences-ours are 80 channel compared to 22. We don’t require a license for our UHF radios. It seems on some frequencies you are allowed up to 50 watts, which is interesting given the characteristics of UHF. It seems programming is also required whereas with ours this isn’t the case.

But to Mr 800 trucks, your assertion that Australia is behind the US on this is clearly wrong. We made the switch decades before you.

I also thank you for starting this thread, it’s the first time I’ve looked for the animated eating popcorn thingy. These folks went off!

To answer your question I’ve been using fender mounts for various trucks and an NMO antenna. If you don’t know it’s the commercial style antenna. I think they are cleaner and maybe work better than a short fiberglass antenna. Mounting is all a trade off. Radio signals need a ground plane for efficient and effective radiation. Middle of the roof is best, but me as a nerd don’t want to do that to my truck. So the next best thing for me is a fender mount.

The more metal around the antenna the better it will work. Example of its the middle of the roof it will broadcast the best in all directions.

A third brake light mount will favor to the front.

A left fender mount will favor to the right.

I have both HAM vhf and uhf plus CB and GMRS

There’s uses for it all, I’ve remote mounted it all behind the right rear seat on a Built Right bracket. That was in my 2018 F150.

Waiting for my wife to look the other way before I buy stuff for the new truck
