Building new home.....garage door size

to add.....we are going with 8' high garage doors.
Wife wants them all the same size.....she likes them being symmetrical.
We are also building a barn on the property that will be big enough to fit a 5th wheel/motorhome/45'center console offshore boat.

I'm mostly concerned with the width of the door. Will 10' be wide enough to get in without pulling in mirrors everytime I go in or out of the garage?

Also with only going 10' will there be enough space in between cars when the garage is full to easily get in/out of the cars? Think open doors. There will be 2' between each bay.

Gotcha, go 8' x 12' if you can and pulling it will be a breeze
Agreed.

Center it in the 12' opening and with that extra 2' between bays, you will only wonder why you ever thought 10' was even an option.

When I was putting in garage doors. The 8ft high ones were double the price of 7ft ones.
Didn't make sense to me. But they charge a premium for non standard stuff.

With 4 8x12 door that garage will be over 55 ft wide.
If you've got the money and space, that is the way I'd go.

45'center console offshore boat.
Hey....I can bait a hook. Just sayin'.... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I sort of went through this...10x10 was my call. 12' wide is even better.
Given your requirements, convince your better half "symmetry" is better with 10' doors for all users. 😜😜

12’ wide for sure. That would be very future proof. I’d consider 9’ height also, but only because I had a mid roof transit van and it was 8’4”. Would love to have been able to pull that inside.
Exciting news to build a house though. Hoping to engage in that process over the next few years myself.

The 8x12 doors will make life easier and bring more peace of mind, 100% get the bigger doors.

I would do 100 x 100 with 15 foot ceilings. Don't ask, just trust me.

Building a new house here shortly and working on final changes to the house plans…..let’s talk garage door sizes. The height will be 8' and the depth of the garage will be fine, already got that figured out. We are doing a 4 car garage with a separate garage door for each “bay”. 1 for her, 1 for me, 1 for the kids car/ranger/mower, 1 for the jeep

Wife drives a Yukon XL and I drive a 2023 F250 Tremor that is stock other than the ranch hand replacement bumper. I won't ever drive anything bigger....no DRW or major lift kits.
Thinking of going with 12’ wide garage doors. What say you? Is that too wide.....do we only need 10' wide doors?

Currently I park the F250 in the portcache and she parks in garage but it has an 18' wide door. F250 is too long to fit at the current house. I'm really excited about being able to park in the garage!!!!!
When we built ours a few years back, I went with a larger 4 car garage 25' Deep X 45' Wide (inside dimensions) w/ two (2) 18' wide X 8' high garage doors. Now that we have had it for a few years, I am very happy with the 25' (inside) depth but wish I had made it 50' wide (inside) so that we had more room between cars (& one ski boat on one end). We both like the 2 - 18' wide doors over 4 individual garage doors because it is easier to get inside with mirrors and all. We actually drive one vehicle in at a slight angle next to the boat to allow my van door to open more easily and give more room to step out. Happy but NOT ideal!

I think you need more than 2' between cars anyway. Next time you park in a Home Depot parking lot, take a measure tape along with you and measure the distance between your truck and the car next to your drivers door and see what's comfortable for you to get out of. It is usually 3' - 3'-6".

Also, our City Building & Safety Dept. Plan-Check required 3'-6" of shear wall at each end of the double 18' doors w/ 3' of wall between these two (2) 18' garage doors. Thus, 3' + 18' + 3' + 18' + 3' = 45' total inside dimension. (NOTE: the two (2) 3'-6" shear wall panels at each end included the overlap of the shear wall plywood which covered & include the 2X6 studs on each end of the garage). I built the ceilings to be 10' high to accommodate the garage door operators' clearances above the 8' doors.

Being a contractor, building it myself and having the room on our almost 2 acre lot, it would have been easy to for us to have it a little bigger but that's how we built it so, we're living with it! One thing I definitely wanted, and am soooo glad we have, is that we put a 9' wide covered breezeway between our house and garage. This breezeway not only always has a "breeze" of some kind running through it but it gives us, the gardener & pool man access to the back yard from the front driveway/street. We use it ourselves almost every day when we park in the driveway to run into the house or back yard from the store or errands. Our kids and friends all access our house through the breezeway into our back door. When our kids and friends had parties under the back patio and used the pool, it was great to have that easy breezeway access too. I actually DON'T know why (or the science behind it) a "breeze" always runs through a breezeway but it sure does. Our previous house was a tract house built with a breezeway and we sure grew to love it. Our dogs always lay in the breezeway when it's hot because they enjoy the air movement too. I'm hoping this helps some with your design. Good luck to you and have fun doing your own thing, Lance

Thanks for the input. Garage will be 27'6" x 58" interior dimensions so plenty big. 10' ceilings as well. We are doing a breezeway as well. Have one on our current home and love it. Good access for yard guys/pool guy/friends entrance.

Funny note our architects name is Lance. LOL,

10' wide by 8' height works and no mirror folding. When I built my house, we have an 18" x 8' and I park my F 350 and my Wifes Jeep Wrangler with no problem.

That is a funny note about your architects name and know he'll be great for you. Yes! You are doing it RIGHT! That's a wonderful size and plenty wide for 4 vehicles. We use our garage JUST for parking vehicles in (plus a little other stuff) but no benches, etc. I built a separate 25' X 45' work shop attached to the other side of the garage for all of that. That shop has a sink/toilet/hot water heater bathroom notched into it w/ both an inside door and an outside door. We use this not only for my shop but we use it for all the horse people to use when it's necessary. It is also great when we have workmen do minor house or yard repairs so no one has to go marching into our home. It has worked out great.

It sound like you know exactly what you want and how to accomplish your individual goals with your build. That's a good thing because, as I'm sure you already know, pre-planning and thinking things over prior to building is the VERY BEST WAY and most cost effective, in the end. It seems like that preparation is rare many times or that some folks don't want to challenge a design by their architect so they just roll with the punches and are not totally happy, when it done. With your great preparations and good questions, you'll be fine. Plus you and your family are going to be HAPPY! Thanks for the reply, Lance

I have 8X11' with no width issues. But I cannot bring it in with a FWC pop-up, stock height.(8' 4") It would be nice to have 9', very expensive to go back and change it.

I was at the ranch this past weekend and started measuring the garage up there. At the ranch garage doors are 8' tall x 10' wide. I pulled out one of the rangers and backed my truck into one of the bays....we are definatley gong with 12' wide doors on the new build. LOL.

thanks to all for the input.

As stated above, 10' wide works, but if you have the room and money, wouldn't think twice about doing 12' wide.

Oy. I cannot fit my truck into my current garage. I may have to move for work and get another home while keeping the other one. Do they make new homes anymore that will allow for a lifted truck? Probably need an 8 or 9ft tall door? Seems like they are all for sedans and suvs.

I have an 8ft door plenty of room. Leveled on 37s. Wont fit in 7ft door

You should be good with a 8’ door but good luck finding one unless it’s more of a custom house.
