7.3L Exhaust Choices

I can't imagine that the Ford unit is anything different at all than the Borla part...wouldn't make any sense really and from pics they look identical.

The Ford part you're thinking of... check the price difference to the Borla S-Type complete stainless cat-back system.

The Ford part retains the use of the factory headpipes' collector/resonator clusterf***. The Borla, on the other hand, gives you a dreamy, aerodynamically (for exhaust gas airflow) superb Y-collector, THEN routes immediately through a smaller resonator.

Zero drone. Quiet operation at part throttle, nice bark on totally cold start up. Pulling a grade under heavy load and 3/4 throttle or more gives a sound that puts a smile on my face.

I may have posted these two photos earlier in the thread, so please forgive me but to illustrate the difference, the Ford/Borla part # exhaust system retains this:

Thanks Apples! I already have the Borla S on my bucket list once I get the truck. I'll have to look closer at the Ford part for giggles to see the differences. I have a great shop that did my exhausts in the past so this will cost me about $100 to put it on.

Interesting comments and, like most threads, they are all over the place. Did a CORSA on my Chevy (and several Denalis in the past) and love them because they are very high quality and ZERO drone. I want the same on the F250 and figured I'd go with the Borla S as they are a top shelf product in every way. I can't imagine that the Ford unit is anything different at all than the Borla part...wouldn't make any sense really and from pics they look identical. For those that have the MBRP...is there really ZERO drone? Had a droney system once and don't want to waste time with systems that have any type of drone while not towing.
The Borla is all new from cats back. The Ford is from OEM resonator back (as Apples posted above) . Best I can tell from my year of research and over analysis is this:

Fords is basically more of a xr1 style muffler with tips bolt on kit as it uses the large OEM resonator in the very front to help with noise/drone. Most report no to little drone. Does dual tip like the diesel super duty look.

Borlas full kit uses their own high flow resonator and then more of a pro XS muffler with larger tubing. 3.5” high quality SS tubing and then 5” single tip. In typical Borla fashion it’s drone free like your corsa.

The other great bolt on is Stainless Works. They have Legend (touring) and Redline (more aggressive although some report they wish it was louder). This is a cat back into their hi flow resonator dual pipes dual mufflers into dual tips out passenger side OEM spot. Great kit as well. Many report old school big block sound from this. Those who want to and do headers pair on of these with SW headers and the sound clips are in my opinion good enough to probably get Optimus outta the strip club to take a peak! 🤣

Good look in your journey down Pandora’s box. This is the equivalent of wheel/tire paradox.

15,000 miles on my Borla S-Type and love it. It’s never coming off the truck!

All this talk about the Borla system has me going back and forth. My two plans were either the S-type, or do a custom setup that leaves the stock system in place and has a vacuum actuated dump behind the cats that goes to a louder muffler and then a downturn. The actuator would be triggered by an upfitter wired to a solenoid.

I like peace and quiet when towing on longer trips…

Borla S-type and a Whipple. You can't go wrong!!!!!!
I still need to do something with those XR-1s you gave me. Might use them on the Bronco...

You guys have reignited the flame… I’m pissed I’ve had my tremor a year and it’s got stock exhaust still. My son also gives me hell. “Dad I wanna hear the motor more. It needs to roar like Godzilla would”. Then he goes on to say “Dad, I like everything about this truck more than your last (Ram 1500 Rebel) except the motor sound isn’t as good yet (Ram was muffler deleted with 5” tips). Once it’s better can I take this truck to college?” (He is 8 😂)

So I’ve gotten it down to 3 options after scouring the depths of Internet forums and YouTube:
Borla s type (man their ATAK release was a let down with how raspy and very non-Borla it sounded). I’ve always loved Borla. Always wanted full kit on a vehicle of mine. Just worried if it may be a little too quiet. But then again when doing family trips it may be nice to have when cruising.

SW redline. I’ve again always admired their products. Really like the sound and how deep. Feel has a little more grit/gravel/rawness to it over Borla in a good old school muscle car/hot rod truck way. You get a lot of product (new resonator, 2 mufflers, and tips). I don’t plan to do headers so I would go redline as really worried legend would be to mild for me.

Finally after months over summer of planning/mimicking a custom xr1 catback I’ve seen online I sourced the parts (y pipe off stock cats, into borla xr1 15” where OEm resonator is then where borla oem muffler is do borla xr1 mini resonator with all new 304ss 3.5” pipe between all of it into factory tailpipe leaving little oem resonator on there then doing 6” black tip out OEM location.)Approx 725 in parts and local exhaust shops wanted crazy many to install. Nearly equal the parts. So at that point why risk not loving it and just do bolt on I figure.

If I didn’t do kit I’ve stumbled upon a video recently of a FM outlaw (full disclosure I’m not an FM fan typically) and tip everything else stock and it sounds pretty darn good. Dunno if it drones or not… but it would be lower risk as I could cut and clamp myself compared to my custom Borla kit. But I’ve always wanted to get it right the first time kind of guy so….

The S-Type will give you this at cruise, and not much more until you have to work Godzilla. Our tires are louder. But at that point you've come out of the cruise coma and are up on the wheel, paying attention to temps (even though they're usually FINE), so any additional exhaust volume means, "We're working, here!".

And I say this as a guy that prefers to fly under the radar. Obnoxious* is never what I wish to be. So there's that.

*I can be an obnoxious bo0b here on the forum but it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye!

Borla S and call it a day. I played around with my Chevy ZR2 and ended up pulling that crap off and going with the Corsa. This time around, I'm just going with the Borla s and be done!

No muffler, resonator tip.... 😉 (I'd say no cat too but.... Pretty sure you live in a bad place for that 🤷😉)
No emissions BS where I'm at, just Portland and Medford I think. Most people from out of state are surprised by that since Oregon has officially gone full retard.

Going for sound like this?
That sounds great! Probably a little quieter. Word on the street is the Hooker Aero Chamber on a 351w Bronco sounds good with no drone.

I have a 3.5" in/out 20" long XR-1 ready to throw in there if I want it quieter.

Nice to see others' results in a vid posted in this thread. I don't know who was quoting who, or if that was the same rig before and after that resonator was added, but it only corroborates that neat "add a resonator" trick that has worked since the dawn of the automobile.

I would place that XR-1 where the system's mid-pipe is now.

If I need to. Or if I want to, after the honey-do list around here calms the f down.

😝

Quieter? I feel most say other than cold start until your under load the Borla kit is barely louder than stock at cruising but is a great sound and comes to life under throttle input with right foot. I’ve seen a few where guys said I was disappointed until a buddy did a WOT pull past me and I was outside. Lol

Context is everything.

I have said elsewhere in other Borla threads here, that "if" I were to ever want this system quieter for towing heavy, I have an option. Simple as that.

"If".

That may happen as the system's existing forward small resonator and it's large, main free-flow muffler have some of the sound packing eroded away with time and heat. Hey, it happens but it takes awhile.

Again, if. And, if so, then I have a solution. Currently, the system as it is designed and sold from Borla, is perfect as you have alluded to.

Cheers!
