7.3L Exhaust Choices

If I tow 10K at 65-70 I can get very slight drone but that’s only on uphills and when I’m below 2,000RPM.

Yep. Very slight, but more than that is the additional volume that puts a smile on my face. This is an excellent system!

If I’m unloaded there isn’t any drone on the highway.

Yep! My OEM Goodyears are more noticeable, yet I can hear what the engine is doing whereas before I had to guess if I did not look at the tach.

Exhaust noise has never bothered my wife or toddler when we take my truck places. The exhaust doesn’t get really noticeable unless you tip into the throttle a good bit. It’s definitely louder than stock but nothing like some of the 5.0 Mustangs and clapped out GM 1500s with no cats I see driving around. My Mickey Thompson Baja Boss ATs with ~20K miles on them are louder than the exhaust on the highway. It’s the perfect gentleman’s/daily driver exhaust IMO.

I agree 100% with this review.

Now, remember this: There is a mid-pipe in the S-Type Borla, a 22" piece of 3.5" diameter stainless that slips between the first resonator and the main muffler... if, as time goes by I find I would like an even-more-quiet system I have a 3.5 Borla XR-1 racing muffler (a resonator, really), that is 20" long. I will have a few inches welded onto the XR-1 and then install that before the main muffler. This is not yet needed, and it may never be, but since I like to faff about with stuff like this I'll get to it eventually and it will be removable as well. win/win.

I know you said no drone, but is there really no drone/annoying noise at highway speeds? Been debating getting this exhaust but don't want to annoy passengers on road trips.
I was prepared for a little and I would have been fine with it. In my opinion, there is none. Like I said, everything in my cab is the same as before (volume levels). When you hit it, you hear it - but I want to hear that. Cruising - no more than stock.

I haven't towed with it yet (obviously) but I agree with the rest of it. My wife has ridden in it twice, today on the freeway, and she has no idea anything is different (nor am I planning to tell her).

It will break in some and get a little louder over time. Takes a couple thousand miles for the resonator & muffler packing to wear in. Mine is worn in nicely and sounds perfect 👌

Is anyone running the magnaflow cat back? I'm asking because me and friends have liked our magnaflow cat backs in the past. Or has magnaflow gone down hill in the 5 years since I had a V8?

I highly recommend the MBRP system if you’re not looking for a full replacement. I did this to my21’ about six months back. It’s solid, easy install. Sounds fucking awesome.!.
I noticed shift pattern changes for the better and noticeable power increase.
Got the stainless and painted it. The harsh winter and salt here is the test. and even at -13* it’s still turning heads 👍🤘⚡️

What did you paint with?

I second the MBRP system!

High heat grill paint. It is not holding up to the weather but I really didn’t expect it to. I ll continue to “ touch” it up in nice weather once a year. It’s more for the hidden look. I don’t think paint sticks very well to the Armor coat stainless. But the black tip still cleans up.

Guess if I went with their stainless (in IL for salt protection) I could just order black tip. Or call and see if they can put custom pieces together so I don’t have to pay for two tips…. 🤔

They might work with you on the tip with a phone call.

All this "tip" talk reminds me of a candid camera skit that prankster comedian Tom Mabe did in a Hooter's restaurant (way back whenever).

The catch was he was wearing the skin tight high-cut short shorts and the low-cut, tight tops the girls wore. It was awkward to look at and it was hilarious.

He told a table of guys, "Yeah, I'm not getting as many tips as the girls do. I try really hard."

One of the dudes at the table said, "I've got a tip for you. PUT SOME DAMN CLOTHES ON."

:ROFLMAO:

I put the AFE rebel exhaust, side exit behind cab. Could not have been happier. Stainless steel, super easy to install by myself, and it sounded awesome. No drone. Plus it left the back tailpipe from getting caught on stuff off road. I would recommend looking into that. Price went up like $400 since. Bought mine, but really an eye grabber with dual tip side exit behind cab and sound makes you smile every time you drive and still quiet enough on road to make phone calls and talk with no issues. Been on there for 5 years no issues in ny winters.

I have this setup and it drones like crazy from 1800-2000 rpm’s on my 24’. I wonder what’s different?

Maybe preference of sound, maybe trim level, I don’t know. But I was pleased with it around town and the highway. ?

I have had my AFE rebel 2 years now and love it. I have some drone but not enough to be bothered by it.

Interesting comments and, like most threads, they are all over the place. Did a CORSA on my Chevy (and several Denalis in the past) and love them because they are very high quality and ZERO drone. I want the same on the F250 and figured I'd go with the Borla S as they are a top shelf product in every way. I can't imagine that the Ford unit is anything different at all than the Borla part...wouldn't make any sense really and from pics they look identical. For those that have the MBRP...is there really ZERO drone? Had a droney system once and don't want to waste time with systems that have any type of drone while not towing.
