Receiver hitches?

Why steel instead of aluminum? Really like my aluminum weigh safe due to its weight and because it won't rust.

Aluminum Weigh Safe hitch receivers DO NOT allow the use of a pintle attachment in their aluminum hitches and only in there steel hitches. Based on youtube videos of people that use aluminum hitches a lot over time the holes seem to wallow out a bit. This might be why Weigh Safe says the pintle attachment is only good on their steel hitch receiver. Even though I've never used a pintle trailer before, I like the ability to be able use a trailer of this type if I need to without dropping hundreds more on another hitch receiver.

I'm looking to hear what most guys are running and if there's a reason why they went with the hitch receiver they chose. I'm not planning to lift my Tremor at all as it will remain most likely stock suspension. I want a heavy duty hitch for a stock 7.3l gas Tremor and while I have no plans to bumper pull 15k, I may in the future so I want to make sure the hitch is rated at a minimum to that amount. I also would prefer a 2.5" receiver that has a decent safety margin above that rating as I may use that in the future for another heavy duty truck. It would be nice if the hitch can handle a pintle attachment and for that reason I'm leaning towards a steel hitch. Unfortunately the B&W hitch in 2.5" doesn't have a 15k or more weight limit so that's off the table for now. If there was a 2.5" hitch that had great adjustability and safe for 20k or so that would be great.

Right now the 3 contenders that I can think of are:

Bullet Proof
Weight Safe Steel hitch
Gen-Y hitch (one thing I dont' like with this one is the limited amount of drop as it goes in 2.5" increments or so)

Any other quality hitch receivers you know of?
Really lovin my all steel WeighSafe 6" drop. Really love the weigh scale built in. Saves all the guess work of getting the tongue weight right every time.

That hitch looks great, I know weigh Safe is out of stock on that hitch the few times I checked their website this past month. I see Amazon still has a few so hopefully they are legit and not a knockoff.

How's the 6 inch drop, is it enough?

It ain’t cheap, but consider a Pelican storage case for it! :D

Got mine through Amazon and no problems.
Regarding the 6" drop, I pulled this for a friend last Saturday, no WD used and a totally stock suspension. I adjusted the WeighSafe to level the trailer and ended up with the ball mount at the second position from the top. The truck was maybe an inch below level in the rear and the hitch said I had 1000 lb of tongue weight on a 8750 lb trailer. Pulled like a dream no sway, very little bounce. I don't think you could ask for a better setup for a stock suspension.

Great idea, I ordered the aluminum version of what you have right there.

I can understand that, makes sense.

Can you give us more info on the case itself (size and where you bought it) and the foam (where you got it and how you gave them the info to have it pre-cut).

This weekend a new toy showed up for Shadowfax: Weigh Safe hitch! Purchased through none other than @Nick@ApolloOptics here on the forum, of course. :D

I've been doing some miscellaneous towing recently and had to borrow a hitch from a friend, so I knew I needed to get a permanent solution for Shadowfax. Here's what I went with:
  • Weigh Safe 2.5" shank
  • 8" drop
  • Steel - purely to be able to run the pintle adapter. I would have far preferred the weight savings of aluminum, but the pintle adapter isn't compatible.
  • All three ball sizes: 2 5/16", 2", and 1 7/8".
  • Pintle adapter.
  • Keyed-alike locking pins.
This thing is a beast. It weighs an absolute ton, but seems extremely well built.

So I have somewhere to store it, I've now ordered a Pelican case with custom foam. That will keep all the bits together. Specifically I've ordered the 1550 protector case.

The custom foam site is really cool, though a bit tedious. Probably took me an hour to get everything dialed in. Also pro-tip: purchase the case on the main Pelican site, not with the foam. If you purchase it with the foam it skyrockets the shipping cost, but on the main site shipping for the case is free.

Pelican case for my Weigh Safe hitch is fully assembled. And it. Is. Awesome.

Case weighs 57 pounds with everything in it. This is the reason I went Pelican. Don’t trust other cases to have a handle that holds up to the weight.

If you do the same, here’s what I recommend when designing your foam:
  • Add finger cut-outs for the balls. Even though they have the narrow neck, there’s surprisingly little room to get your finger in there. I’ll end up using the pin hole to get them out.
  • Err on the side of making the holes too shallow. The balls in particular are set farther in than they should be. If the hole is a bit too shallow it will just compress the foam in the lid, which is fine.
  • Leave a bit of extra room around the dust cap for the locking pins. I thought I had it drawn out well, but it’s tight. And because the cap is rubber it grabs the foam more than metal on its way in/out. Going to need to cut back the foam a bit there.

Yep! Like I said in the post, probably took me an hour. At most two. Used a tape measure and calipers for the various measurements.

All of the simpler objects I used combinations of basic shapes. Balls are a cylinder combined with a rectangle, for example.

For the scale and pintle adapter, because of their complexity, I used the built-in tool that lets you take a photograph of something and have it generate a shape. I put a blank piece of printer paper under the item before taking the picture.

Pro-tip: once you have your picture, I personally found it much easier to edit the picture in an editing program like Paint.NET before giving it to the foam website. I made the background pure white and the object pure black. Guaranteed the website processed it directly.

Still tedious, but less tedious than adjusting the outline in the website tool.

You did a great job designing it.

I bought Kaizen foam inserts for my Milwaukee packout tool boxes and cut them myself for some tools. I’m thinking about possibly buying some foam for one of my packout boxes and giving it a try myself before I spend that much money on the pelican case.

Very cool! Ya, the Pelican site is definitely not the only option and, of course, it’s also possible to cut the Pelican foam yourself.

I also reached out to Weigh Safe to give them the idea of selling pre-made cases and they have one in the works, though no idea about timeline for it to go on sale.

The thing I’ll emphasize since I’m not personally familiar with the Milwaukee boxes: make sure they can handle the weight. The case is heavy when it’s all together and it would suck to have the handle rip off.

This is exactly the reason I went for the steel weigh safe.

Pelican makes some great cases as most 2nd amendment loving people know. While pricey they handle extreme abuse and you did a great job measuring/laying out that setup and getting that foam cut to fit that hitch setup... 👏

I just emailed Weigh Safe and they told me in July hopefully they'll have steel hitches back in stock. I had emailed them a 1-2 months ago looking to set up a group buy and was told 15% they'd offer. Hopefully when those hitches are back in stock I can see about getting a group buy started.

Just ordered this guy, Hopefully it works well.

Nice, I saw last evening 2 of these in stock and it just went down to 1 so I pulled the trigger. It's an 8" drop and if I need to I'll just chop off the 1-2 inches if it's to long. I know the B&W hitch is 7" and seems to be pretty popular so I'll probably chop 1" off if it is indeed to long.

I'll buy the pintle attachment and extra keyed lock from Weigh Safe once I receive my hitch receiver. As much as I wanted to order directly from weigh safe, I don't want to wait months for a replacement hitch receiver if something comes up on there end or supplier side.

You may want to confirm the pintle compatibility before you order. As @ccw stated earlier the pintle is only compatible with the steel version of the WeighSafe.

This case is next level organization! Looks great - but for something that is down and dirty I am sticking with a platic bin in the garage!

6" is perfect you can mount up or down - so a lot a adjustment flexibility and no issues in up position clearning tailgate.
