Why a 5th wheel? Why not a Travel Trailer

Personally for me. Bumper pull I find all the way. You got the bed of the truck. And when you arrive at your destination the bed of the truck isn’t taken up by a fifth wheel. I also started a business doing RV repairs. And to get the campers back to the workshop it’s a pretty Windee driveway. Bumper pull is way easier to back up than the fifth wheel with curves. The pivot point on the back of the truck is much easier to maneuver than the pivot point over the axles inside the truck.

My payload is 2950 and the pin weight of my 5th wheel is 2700. However it's a toy hauler so with my golf cart in the back the pin drops down to 2150. The pin weight of toy haulers are calculated empty, as long as I have my golf cart I'm good to go on payload. I was amazed the first time I hooked it up dry, the truck only squatted 2.5 inches. It tows like a dream and is 42' long. I couldn't find a TT that fit what we wanted and I'm glad we didn't cause we love our fifth wheel.

Buying both the truck and trailer blind and not knowing how the 5th wheel we wanted would measure up in the bed, I was worried about scraping, especially since we do a lot of boondocking and the forrest roads here are not always the best maintained. We settled on the bumper pull as a safe bet, and have not had any regrets. Also, of all the people we know with trailers and 5th wheels, the only one to have an accident was with a 5th wheel. The 5th wheel flipped on the highway and flipped their tow vehicle with it. Someday a 5th wheel maybe, but not for how we camp now.

I have the B&W sliding 5th wheel hitch that goes into my gooseneck ball hole, so I can easily remove the 5th wheel hitch in 2 minutes. Slide it forward while traveling down the highway which make the trailer much more stable and take weight off the rear. Then slide it to the rear while parking the trailer which gives you better turning ! Best of both worlds ! ! !

My payload of 2717 totally counts out most 5ers. Even atcs unless there stated weights are wrong.
Toyhaulers are calculated empty, as soon as you put a four wheeler or golf cart in the back your gaining roughly 40% of that weight off the pin. My golf cart is around 1200 lbs so I get back 480lbs when it's loaded. If you add fire wood, the Grills and our typical luggage our pin is always lighter than stated.

I own a 38’ travel trailer toy hauler. The Travel trailer is a better fit for Us do To the amount of toys we needed to load up. The truck bed space is needed.

What made you choose a 5th wheel over a travel trailer?
Here’s a twist to the age old question
of if wheel versus travel trailer LOL
Once again .. personal preferences and priorities

I opted for the TT because I can store a lot in the bed but also carry the bicycles over the bed. We have four bikes and I never found a truly elegant solution for four bikes with a 5th wheel. Especially because we can arrive at a campground, disconnect and take our bikes wherever we want without additional hassle.

My TT is 37’. It is a bunk house, not a toy hauler. Our Hensley hitch eliminates sway so the ride is extremely comfortable. I have an F350 with the 7.3 and have towed this rig about 17K miles in 6 months (not a typo) ?. We have a YouTube channel about our road trip with this rig if you are interested. It’s called Home Sweet America.

Is it true you can have passengers ride/sleep in a fifth wheel legally while driving, but not a travel trailer?
No. Some states will allow people/pets in either but most don't allow in either. FW has no advantage there.

37 foot 5th wheel with a 22 foot garage...i can fit kid's ut and my 4 seater just fine...View attachment 20307
What is the dry pin weight listed for that vs. the actual pin weight when you have it loaded? I ask because I'm awaiting my '21 F250 7.3L and a lot of the listed pin weights wouldn't work for me as I'm typically adding a lot of payload via passengers (myself, wife, 65 pound dog, 4 month old, 13 year old step-daughter and usually 1 of her friends). That right there is usually around 750 pounds alone...

Great channel. What a fun adventure. I also have the 7.3l Lariat and pull a GD 311BHS 5er. With 2800lb pin weight when trailer is loaded, it pulls no problem in the western mountains being from Las Vegas. Looks like your GD has a similar floor plan on the TT. Wish you and your family the best on your exciting travels.

most of the attitude 5ers are 3000-3200# pin weight, again, its a toyhauler so loading the garage changes the pin weight on the truck. I personally would never go back to a TT. way too much room in a 5th wheel. i did love my ragen back in the day though.

Love love 5th wheel trailers - tow nicer, more space, etc. - but they drop like a rock with re-sale value. You must have the rig to pull it. Just compare 5th wheel trailers and bumper pulls on many of the used trailer websites. You can also pick up a "repo" 5th wheel for cheap. There's RV dealers that line up to buy them from the finance companies. Just FYI.

I took delivery of my 2021 Iconic Silver/Camel Leather F250 Lariat Tremor 6.7 L diesel and hauled a full load of firewood at the 1,000 mile mark for another 760 miles. I used the Eco mode for level ground and descents and engaged Tow/Haul mode for climbs, averaging 70 MPH most of the time. I actually hit 21.0 MPG at one point and the overall average on the truck now is 17.7 MPG. I am nearing the delivery date of a Black Series HQ19 off-grid trailer (ordered 9 months ago...) and will have the ultimate tow vehicle for it (especially off road). While my fuel range so far is over 600 miles at fill-ups, I know my towing MPG is going to be a lot less (12-13 MPG expected), so I am planning on installing an S&B 60 gallon fuel tank to bump my towing range up to an estimated 750 miles. BTW, my new Tremor is the first new truck I have bought since 1992 when I bought an F150 XLT, which still runs like a top after 260,000 miles.

Yes. We have a Grand Design 312BHTS. The floor plan was a big selling point for us because it’s similar to 5th wheels except for the ceiling height.

Thanks for the complement on the channel! It has been an amazing adventure
