I saw a Marshall in the chow line the other day who was carrying a 1911. My favorite handgun for sure but 10 rounds at best with a Wilson Combat magazine, versus what 17-19 rounds in a 19x or G45 or similar duty carry? Ballsy, potentially fatal move in move in my opinion.I always hated false bravado commentary like this. It’s a cute notion that one’s skills are so good that they only need one or two bullets, but as Mike Tyson once said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” Goes right with the spirit of the Helmuth Von Molke quote, “No plan survives first contact with the enemy.” Point being, most gunfights aren’t a simple game of draw, point, shoot and stationary bad guy goes away. Statistically speaking, the good guy is the one on his back foot, possibly already shot, stabbed, clubbed over the head, hands slick with sweat, eyes stinging with blood and now you need to fight for your life agains hopefully just one assailant.. I know I’m good with pistol. I would never be so bold as to make the claim that I only need a few rounds to handle business. In fact I never met anyone, military or LE who was in a gunfight that thought during or after the fact, “Gosh, I have way too many bullets for this party.” In my OIS, I was moving through a house during a dope warrant and came to room with an open door. As I approached the threshold, I saw the muzzle of a rifle protruding a quarter inch past the door jam. I began putting rounds through the wall and he reciprocated in kind. 17 rounds from a Glock 17 went real damn fast shooting at a guy I couldn’t even see. Not sure which three of the 17 rounds hit him, but I suspect it was toward the end of the mag because that’s when he stopped shooting back. That was luck because six didn’t penetrate the wall at all and eight missed entirely. This is a scenario that could easily play out in any one of your homes during a break in. I want all the beers, all the HP, all the girlies and damn sure all the bullets.
Unrelated - I recently transitioned from a 19x to a 509 tactical. The grip angle and my natural point of aim is a lot better. I shot the glock for years, albeit only as a secondary and would always have to make that split second adjustment on sight. I'm tempted to grab the G45 COA blue label just to stay current on them and see if I do any better. I just was not as fast as I could be on the 19x / RMR.
