Are you using a sway control/ distribution hitch with your set up? We're looking at an airstream international 28rb and based on trailer GVWR we've got tons of room as far as towing capacity but I was wondering if a distribution hitch might make life easier

We’ve got a 27FB on order and I’ve been struggling with the same dilemma. I’ve towed some pretty heavy livestock trailers and equipment trailers that should equal or surpass the weight of the TT and never had an issue but I see so many in the TT world get so passionate about the WD hitches.

My thoughts (for now) are to add some Sumo’s and then test out some loads to see how much squat I get. If I can mitigate it pretty well I’ll probably take delivery with my current setup (B&W Stow and Go) and see how everything works out.

The issue with TTs is they are essentially large but lightweight boxes, so they catch lots of wind load, especially side loads from wind and passing trucks. WD hitches help with these huge cardboard boxes.

Isn’t’ that more a function of an anti-sway device? The WD hitch is helping to better distribute weight between the front axels of the tow vehicle and the TT, correct? I get that a lot of WD hitches incorporate anti-sway measures, but I’m trying to keep them separate for the sake of my learning and sanity. Lol

Thank you, that’s an awesome rack! I also have an ATC toyhauler and race MTB’s and Motorcycles so I like the adaptability of this rack system, thanks for sharing.

You are correct, the primary function is to move some tongue weight onto the front TV axle and the trailer axle, but most some? are excellent sway reducers as well. With a relatively light TT and a 250/350 the weight distribution part is less important than the sway reduction. We tow a 34ft TT with the 350 - I would not bother with the hassle of the WD hitch for actual weight distribution, it is not an issue. The sway reduction is the only reason we use it. Some of the heavy TH TT have 1500-1600 lb or so tongue weight, so a WD hitch would be necessary in those cases.

Edit - the bar types like Equal-i-zer are good anti-sway. We use an 10k Equal-i-zer.

On the WDH issue I pulled my 9000 lb TT for a year with my F150 using an Equalizer. Put in quite a few miles on I-5 with the semis and a couple trips with some pretty good winds. Sway was never an issue despite the F150 not being enough truck. In the eastern Sierras and eastern Nevada got hit with some stout wind gusts and the Equalizer took the body shots and laughed! That said I still felt that the tail was very close to wagging the dog which is why I ditched it for the Tremor and its extra 3000 pounds. The massive added power and exhaust braking is icing on the cake.

As far as "making life easier" the WD is expensive, heavy, cumbersome, and takes a lot longer to hitch/unhitch. It also takes a while to get set up initially and dialed in to your specific rig. However, the towing experience will be improved enough to make all of it worthwhile. (assuming you have one wirh anti sway!)

Hooked our Sundowner up to the Tremor for the first time today. Tremor pulled it effortlessly, noticeable power improvement from our 18 F350 DRW 6.7. Wasn’t quite as stable as the DRW, but that is to be expected. Very happy with how the Tremor handled it, looking forward to some longer tows. Edit: Trailer is not as fancy as a lot of them but it is a quality built trailer. It’s about 13,000 #’s with approx 3,000 #’s pin weight, only had 5 pounds of air in the airbags.

How do you like the Sundowner. I have been looking at them. I pull a LQ Sundowner horse trailer and love it.
