Tremors and Campers let's talk camping!!

Awesome!!! I sure am. I'm currently using an Equal-i-zer anti-sway hitch. It keeps the camper very stable and have had zero issues.

Here is the hitch i have: https://www.equalizerhitch.com/stor...y-control-hitch-with-pre-installed-hitch-ball.

I got these to quiet the creeking when towing: https://www.equalizerhitch.com/store/hitch-accessories/sway-bracket-jacket-pair.

Also your suppose to grease the weight distribution bar hinges and i got this grease from them: https://www.equalizerhitch.com/store/hitch-accessories/high-performance-lubricant

Lastly because i hate surprises and try to prepare for anything breaking or getting lost: https://www.equalizerhitch.com/store/pins-and-clips/double-spare-pin-pack
Perfect. Thanks for the links!

Thanks for the reply. I guess our last camping trip messed me up. We had a 40’ spot and our trailer is a 24’ Winnebago. It’s about 28’ overall. We took up all of the spot in my opinion… I suppose we could have been 6’ longer but just smashed in there.

I’ve had diesels and you haulers in the past so towing 12-14k has been doable. My concern is with a 33’11” overall am I no longer going to be finding spots at state campground? Almost why I want the Momentum and rear deck… try to dry camp because that opens up so many options at the states parks.

Our friends got an Eclipse Iconic (5er) and it’s OAL is 36’. So that seems easier to maneuver etc. When I started thinking about it our potentially new rig would be almost as large, and bumper pull.

There’s another thread going here on this forum about Grand Designs… debating 5er vs bumper pull. The thread is going in the direction that BP is just fine but I’m in CA where our state parks are limited in spaces due to size.

I was hoping that swapping back to a toy hauler would give us for more options to camp using BLM land and Boondock. Having a “park trailer” with small tanks and no generator is killing me.

For some reason I think the 25g model seems like I’d be able to rip around with way better, I’ve always liked smaller trailers that are manageable.

Even before the Rona Time we used our trailer about 40 nights annually… at minimum. 2020… we stayed in that thing for like 6 weeks straight about a mile from our house just to maintain our sanity. I can/do work remotely if needs be and also want the bigger rig for that. We do plan on the kids going back to normal school this year but we did a virtual academy this past year which was awesome… but we did 10 days in Morro Bay a few weeks ago and they had to do proctored standardized testing on Zoom, me with my own Zooms, wife there and 2 dogs.

Having a back deck patio… would have been NICE. Depending on trialed model… the garage would make a rad mobile command center.

Long ass way to ask… what’s are people’s experiences towing a 28-30’ “Box” with an Overall length of almost 34’?

I’ve towed 24-25’ (I guess 28’ overall with tongue) no problems. When I got the Tremor I was laughing at how easy it was to tow our Winnebago. Honestly the Winnebago was a HANDFUL behind my wife’s 2020 Expedition with HD Towing and well within the specs, with our Blue Ox WD hitch set up correctly.

I guess I’m tripping on whether or not bumper pull in the 28-30’ Box Length makes my Tremor turn into a white knuckle tow vehicle.

We’ve been RV’in for probably 15 years now. I’ve had great WD set ups and was shocked when my old 7.3 Excursion towed our 24’ Toy Hauler BETTER than my previous 2006 Duramax 3500.

Also the same trailer put my 2006 F-250 on the bump stops. Fixed that with a new WD Set up but didn’t make any sense since it had way more capacity than the Excursion.

I used to go on 3 week trips as a kid… visit the whole Western Coast, cut across Washington, Idaho, into Wyoming and Montana for Yellowstone, and returning back down visiting other cool stuff. We did it have a trailer in tow but a small RV. Those were the trips I remember.

My kids are 11 and 8… I always ask if they like the camping and RV stuff and they do. I think I have 3-4 more years of that left because now we all Mountain Bike together as they are older, we shoot and do other stuff. I figured a Toy Hauler with Generator would make camping so much easier because of BLM Land and we even own a couple plots of land which I figured maybe we could visit too. I think trailer park campers REALLY limit our options and I’d be opening them up to a whole new world.

But I just want to make sure that it will be a breeze towing bumper pull in the 34’ overall range and wasn’t going to make it all suck for me.

I guess just not knowing the “feel” of that size rig and what it’s like in cross wind and pulling through gas stations, some windy roads in Northern California.

I would say I’m a bad ass at towing… and if I had a choice I’d just work at Home Depot or be a truck driver. Lol. Just want to make sure I’m not wishing I got an F-350 or smaller trailer after pulling the trigger on something that’s like $65K plus.

Also… as a resident of Commiefornia I can see having to work/stay in this thing for extended time in the event we’re waiting on a house to close or be built out of state. I have plenty of friends that have ended up living in hotels because their home out of state was incomplete once they moved there and arrived “surprise the builder lied.” Whole other subject… but I guess I want to know to know how big of a bumper pull I can move up to comfortably behind my 6.7 Tremor with its 10,800 GVWR.

PS… I can see a side by side in our future. I think that also keeps the family more engaged camping. We’ve lost few friends to riding Bikes and Quads in the desert which is why my wife only allowed us to get a TT when we bought the last trailer. I think the lack of generator and coffee in the AM when Boondocking changed her mind a bit knowing that a push start generator was all we needed and hooking up the Honda EU’s is a mission which sucks.
Sorry for taking so long to answer, just got home from camping myself. I mean you have to do what's best for you. But I mean I have a Jayco Jayflight 33RLDS which is a bumper pull. Its a 33' box and prob around 36' with the tongue. Loaded with my junk its weighs 7820lbs. I have no issues towing it and have no issues finding sites at the state parks here in Texas. I book sites that are 35' or longer. I have no issues fitting the trailer in the spot then parking the truck at an angle in front of the trailer. I have a 250 and don't wish I had a 350 at all. I mean your practically getting a 350 in a 250 with the Tremor package anyway. It used to sway like crazy in the wind, but I just got some new tires and it pulled like a dream this last trip I just took. Wind is going to blow you around.. your driving around a wind catcher on wheels.. no avoiding that. I don't think you will have any issues with a longer trailer as long as you setup the WD hitch right and have air pressure in your tires good.

I saw you ask someone else if they were to get a new trailer would that get something smaller or different. I'm currently looking at getting a Rockwood 8337RL which is a bigger bumper pull trailer than what I have now. So it depends on what you want and what kind of camping your planning on doing. I personally like the extra space of the bigger campers, and if your gunna be boondocking, you'll need something with decent water tanks. And generally bigger rigs have bigger water tanks.

Pic of my rig for reference. Trailer is 40ft from ball to bumper and another 3+ft if I lower the carrier on the back. I use the Reese Straight line WD system. It works great at reducing sway, setup is a bit of a pain however. Truck pulls it like a dream. Some spots are a bit tight, but if you book online most campgrounds have pics of the sites or worst case we call ahead and ask if we'll fit. I'd say this, I wouldn't want any bigger!!

Thanks for that reply. So it sounds like wind will be an issue still, but I think with a 5er it’s like potatoes/potato’s right? I’d assume we have anti sway options still (Like I do today) and although a 5er has the weight over the axles they don’t have anti sway, have a taller profile and I risk even more challenges regarding space @ campgrounds (limited spots). I usually say I have 28-30 now just for the same reasons.

So here’s a question… if you bought a trailer all over again… would you buy a Bumper Pull that large, 5er, or a smaller trailer?

I’m looking at the Momentum 25g for the “ease of use” but if I go 28’, I should be looking at the 29’ model with Washer and Dryer hook ups.
I bought the trailer we wanted at this point in time lol. If buying a bumper pull I would stay 40’ or under. If/when I get a fifth wheel I will most likely be getting a dually to go with it. I only say that because I will most likely be getting a big 5’r , one too heavy for a srw.

After 9 months, finally got around to posting. "Sparkles the Truck" (F-350, 6.7 diesel Lariat with air bags) and "Miley Cirrus" (nuCamp Cirrus 720). The wet weight of the camper is 2400 lbs, allowing almost 1000 lbs of payload headroom. It's unfortunate that nuCamp gave up on the 720 so quickly.

Question on slide ins in general...is it common to drop them if you are going to be camping in one spot for a few days? Just thinking it might be a hassle if you also need the truck to drive around while camping.

I know many people do unload the camper - I don't. Can be a real PITA to reload if you're not on level ground. Pretty easy to button everything up to drive off, especially if you leave camp chairs, tables, etc at the site. I would unload only if serious 4x4 trails were in the plan.

Here are some pics of my new rig a 2021 Sabre 37FLH. It's 43' long, weighs 11,500# empty and has a 2500# hw. I'm using a 20k B&W Companion hitch and I have no complaints with the truck/trailer/hitch setup everything works together well.
I'm a happy camper?

Be careful out there campers! Wind gusts today driving through New Mexico in to Texas had my TT in the left lane and the truck was in the right lane getting drug over into the left lane. Good thing nobody was next to me. Pretty much came out of nowhere coming over a hill and ahead was nothing but dust. I had to slow down to 40-45 (speed limit was 75 and I was originally going 65) and the wind was blowing the camper all over the place. Had to drive in that wind for 75 miles. I’ve never seen so many tumble weeds in my life and had to pick them out from the front and underneath truck and camper. No type of weight distribution hitch or anti sway device would have helped. I would hate to think about what it would be like without my wdh/anti sway.

I love my sway bar it’s helped me with wind and passing truck it’s night and day with that sway controller

Well I sprung a surprise trip for my kids today. Thank God for the off-road goodies of the Tremor. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get into the site. I had to use my locker and “rock crawl” mode. I was able to get in without getting stuck. And yes. This is actually the site. Smack dab in the middle of black top
