Tremor & Four Wheel Camper

After 20k+ miles with the camper since last August I started to feel rear springs are not holding as much as before. Fully loaded it almost sits on the overload springs and going over bumps is pretty rough.

I ordered Hellwig's rear sway bar (PN7845) which I think will help over all ride, but I am trying to decide between Hellwig's helper spring kit LP-35 (PN3511) that replaces only the overload spring, or replacing rear springs all together with a custom leaf spring set from Alcan designed for the heavier load.

That’s…not great to hear for a truck that’s supposed to be used hard for years.

FWIW Carli also has a replacement spring pack option that’s designed for a constant 1000 pound load if you’re interested in going with a Carli kit. Could also try their add-a-pack that replaces the overload and rear block.

I'm sure the truck could handle this load for a long time, even when touching the overload springs it doesn't really squat, but I am looking for a better ride.

I did not consider the Carli option because dry weight on my camper is 1600 lbs so I would be looking for a higher constant load that AFAIK Carli does not provide. I also plan on adding aluminess rear bumper and storage boxes so I can move the gear I currently carry inside the cabin into the boxes in the back, that will put more strain on the rear suspension so might as well be ready for that too.

Makes sense, though worth noting that TFL had those Carli springs with a FWC and it worked really well for them. I believe they were the same springs, anyways. At the time of their video series they were doing early testing for Carli, so it's possible they changed, but I'm pretty sure they called out a 1000 pound constant load even though their camper definitely weighed more.

I have the Carli HD springs. My camper is 1k lbs dry including the fridge. This doesn't include bits and bobs like folding chairs and a first aid kit, so like, 50 more lbs of gear? I think I remember reading the HD leafs are good for 1000-1500lbs of constant load.

Mine is significantly heavier than the usual FWC at 1600 lbs because I added the 400 lbs toilet and indoor shower option. When fully loaded for a week long trip I carry 20 gallons of water in the main tank, plus 6 gallons in the water heater, plus extra 9 gallons of drinking water, close to 300 lbs just in water. When I get to the usual tools, chairs, tables, food, and people, I'm close to 2600-2800 lbs which is still under the max payload rating of 3050 lbs in my truck but certainly heavy, especially off-road.

Ok I thought I was the only one. My HAWK has been on my truck since oct20 and the rear leaf springs are definitely done. To the point it’s unbearable off-road. I am in the process of a warranty claim with Ford.

I am leaning towards Helwig rear helper springs after over phone discussion with my local truck equipment co., still have to take it in so they can look at it in detail. I weighed the truck and camper fully loaded it was 10280#, payload of 2780#. I think the added load capacity with helpers is what it needs and should take some of the sway out as well.

We ordered a Super Duty Lariat Tremor and are still waiting on it. Currently we have a new Fleet, fully loaded on a Tacoma. When we get the tremor, we will have to build a 6" booster seat for it to work in the Tremor. But, I will put a drawer in it for spare storage. I love the 4 wheel campers on the Tremors, I love your set up!

Thanks, good luck with the Tremor, I think you will really like once you get used to its size.

Please report how the claim go. I would be surprised if Ford warranty covers this but worth a try.

Good to hear helper springs may be the way to go, it is the simpler and cheaper of the options I've considered.

I'm sure custom leaf springs would be a much better ride when loaded, but since I may take the camper off a few times a year, I'm not sure how stiff that is going to be. If I had a flat bed like yours I'd definitely do the custom leaf pack and address the constant weight.

Have you looked at the rear sway bar? The guy that runs FWC Owners Tours has a Power Wagon with a Hawk and he highly recommends the sway bar, he also has Hellwig air bags but they don't make those any more, only the helper springs.

Fortunately I drive a 4x4 super duty daily at work

You are pretty close if not over considering you have to add your weight, your passenger’s weights and any accessories you may have installed like a winch to that 2600-2800 lbs.

Thanks, appreciate the informative feedback. I have not considered the sway bar as I'm more concerned about the constant weight right now. May end up getting both over time? We'll see.
