Drive Modes

He'll, its a 80 mile round trip to go to the grocery store for me. 90% of my driving is on 2 lane, no shoulder rural highways, very senic in the Texas Hill Country, extremely relaxing. I average 18.5 mpg. Put the Tremor in "D" and forget about it. Have Pusher intake, cold air intake (S&B), CCV reroute, Banks exhaust, pedal monster. Have no clue which if any are helping my MPG. 65 to 70 mph.

I hear ya. Rural Wyoming here and long scenic drives to get groceries / work. Cruise under 70 and get 16-17 mph and like someone said, if they want to pass go for it.

I was even one to roll with EB also until I was advised that the turbo vanes will only last so long from the open and shutter cycle and I'd be replacing a turbo at 100K+ so I resort now to the T/H only.
I was wondering if there’s negative side effects to using the Engine Brake all the time. My regular driving is twisty canyon roads, and I’ve been using it daily.
I’ve only been using TH for hauling loads, maybe I should use it instead of EB when empty?
With the price of diesel I’ve also experimented with Eco mode, and I think it does save on fuel, not a lot but some. I’m a grandpa driver anyways.

That is what I was told by an expert - I'm not one to sit and argue but rather intake the advice and proceed intelligently.

Fact of the matter is: do I need EB on 100% of my driving time? No. Can I still use it for specific applications? Absolutely. In short, use it when necessary, all other times, brakes are cheaper. Sold.

I run in normal mode most of the time, no EB. (Except when towing of course).
I have tried Eco mode, not a fan, and it didn’t make a difference to mpg, plus the skinny pedal felt sluggish.

Running in either mode empty, My22 6.7 gets 21 to 22 mpg going 70-75 mph on flat ground.
I am TOTALLY happy with that! 👍👍

Here's my $.02 after having my 2022 for a year trying Drive Modes. Not all inclusive report but what I can add at this time.
ECO : A tame driving mode, not giving you the real push off the line. Never really saw anything added to the MPG numbers. Never seemed to make sufficient gains at HWY speeds.
Normal : My daily use mode. It's just right for my needs when I want to chill. Best for my "in-town" speeds as well as the HWY driving.
Tow/Haul : If you want to tap every gear while driving...this is it. Transmission works well getting through the gears. For me it tends to stay out of 10th for my "in-town" speeds so it does take the MPGs down a bit.

Traction Control : Using the button to change the TC functioning tends to give me the best "driving". Changing to Sport Mode while in driving Normal Mode is the best feeling mode. MUCH better pedal input/response, it does tend to lead to a drop in MPGs.

Using EB ON or AUTO : EB on is awesome if you want a little "extra braking" when slowing down. SO nice to just come off the go pedal coasting to the stop line slowing down without much brake input. I'd go so far as to say I prefer EB use over using Tow/Haul due to how the TH forces the transmission to downshift when stopping.

I'd love to hear more about the reasons behind limiting EB use all the time. I ran my 2015 w/EB all the time. Never had any issues up till the time it went off to another owner with 225k. The turbo VGT is already working when you are driving around town. I guess I"ll put the PID on my CTS3, then try some of the TH or EB modes to see what happens.
I think the mindset might be a carry over from the 6.0L VGT issues that developed around the unison ring.

Nice breakdown, couldn’t have said it better myself.

I am a tow-haul type of guy.

With 78 gears to choose from, I like the tranny to try and hold one as much as it can.

That gear hunting, gear skipping, awkward gear selection drives me up a wall.

The days of 5 or 6 gears where you could really control your power and feel them at the pedal are truly missed by yours truly -- unless I jump in my 6.0L of course.

On long and flat road trips, I will toss it into ECO mode to see what over all MPG I can get but even with my simple set up - the most I've seen is high 17s. I'll gain 1 MPG at most.
This is how I feel most the time. I hate the gear hhunting and skipping.

I have never noticed a difference in eco mode that was enough I could say one way or another that it made a difference.

Secret sport mode?

I generally use eco with my 7.3L. I’ve noticed a couple MPG gain with it.

Tow/haul for when I’m…towing or hauling. Also when I want to be more aggressive with the throttle.

Normal pretty rarely?

Slippery sometimes when it’s slippery. I find it helps with throttle modulation on take-off.

Only thing I dislike about the modes other than tow/haul is the 1 to 3 skip shift. That is far too large of a ratio skip in most situations, but the transmission is determined to do it every. Single. Time. Makes for a huge drop in power for a solid second, right off the line.

I agree with the 1st - 3rd skip, can’t stand that!

Pressing the traction control button twice enters Sport Mode. Maybe it’s not a secret? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😂

Ahh, this is just for traction control though, not engine and tranny specs I believe, also, it doesn't work on the 23s :(

I use tow haul 99% of the time so I can get access to all the gears I paid for!! That said, I would like it to start in 2nd in regular mode. 1st gear is 4.70 combined with 4.30 rear gear is  steep (I get why) and 2nd is 3.00.

2 3 4 5 6 7 8 10 would be my preferred way.

Same.
