Data and analysis to find the best oil for the 6.7

I did my first oil change at 3100 on my 6.7 about a month and a half ago. Used Rotella T6. Almost immediately I started to notice the “typewriter” sound that’s well known in the newer 6.7s.

I’ll be switching to another oil (going to try Triax Fleet Supreme) at the next oil change to see if the noise stays or goes.

Typically happened to a lot of us at first oil change, mine did it and Ford did my first OC.

It will come and go, mine occasionally does it with Triax.

Still have the typewriter ticking??

Given the video results : Rot T6 for all, Schaffer's for those wanting to spend more money. 😜 😜 :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
Did you notice he failed to mention two oils are not API rated??? If he pays for all this himself...why not mention it??:unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure:

Here's the real world answers : Run what YOU want!! No oil test, no oil comparison, no marketing hype will tell you more than your own motor. I've been on this road long enough to know what's hype, what's junk, and what works.

Really don’t feel like rewatching it lol what 2 oils are not api rated ? I didn’t pick up on that

Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Have been running Schaeffers since day one here in Texas. Just confirmed I will continue to use it.
I too use and will continue to use Schaeffers 5w40 full synthetic.

Amzoil and Hot Shots....not that either one are worth buying. Just CLEARLY avoids to mention API rating for those two oils as he specifically mentioned API on the other oils. I mean you are making a comparison of various products, mentioning various elements of the products.

Rotella 5w40 ALL YEAR LONG is ALL you need -54*F pour point. ... As an Amsoil dealer, I use Rotella 5W40. (y);)
I use amsoil 5w-40 for the past 20 years. I know Rotella is good, I use that in our trucks at work. Being a dealer, you get a discount on Amsoil, why do you use Rotello over Amsoil? Honest question?

Back for another update.

Here's a recent update:
Big change here was swapped the filter on my S&B from the K&N style filter to the non-serviceable dry unit. Previously and currently, I still ran a filter sock. Soot load was at 0.5% again and well below the 1% loading they would worry. Still using FoMoCo Filters (older one, not revised part number). I do plan to send them a clean sample of Triax for records after speaking to them on the phone. I asked about the Iron and they said it's nothing they would worry about, some trucks just run heavier in that PPM. They said it could also be from the longer intervals as their universal averages are based on a 7k mi sample.

TBN actually improved and they recommend I could go 12k mi, especially based on the soot report but honestly I have no need to go longer. 10k is plenty but I like seeing where TBN remains from an acidic standpoint.

@JTredway : Damn that's some good oil. Are you going to go to 12k??

Naw. I'm probably just run it out on the oil life meter like I have been doing. 10k mi is good enough. I don't want to keep paying extra for soot load testing. At 10k miles + you need to know what TBN and Soot loading is doing. While it seems like the filter is keeping it (soot) manageable I don't feel there's enough reward out of the Risk vs Reward index lol.

The 57k mile change will still be on the old style filters. I need to order another pack of four but will probably use the revised filter number and get a soot load on that test around 67k mile. So this time next year probably.

So this time next year probably.

Damn it man. Making people wait huh? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: 😜😜 Side note : I hope ATL is a safe passage, going to be coming that way.

We are honestly open and rocking. The Chlorine cloud has a lot of people fkd up from the BioLab fire. Our project is currently shutdown. Waiting on air monitoring results.

Just got the UOA for my 25,000-mile oil change and figured I’d keep this going. Had been exclusively using Rotella T6 5w-40 (and more recently T6 15w-40) in a variety of engines for a decade. Based on UOAs it looks like the CK-4 T6 5w-40 was reformulated at some point to match the add pack of the T6 15w-40 (no moly, reduced zinc and phosphorus). My 6.7 seemed to like the T6 15w-40 (virtually no typewriter noise, generally seemed to “like” the oil better than T6 5w-40 or Motorcraft 10w-30), but had mixed results with the newer formulations on other engines.

On the attached lab report for my 6.7 the most recent UOA was with T6 15w-40 (and 10oz of Archoil 9100, hence the boron). Previous UOA was Motorcraft 10W-30 (the dealer put this in while investigating shavings I found at 15k, hence the low miles on oil). Typewriter noise was virtually nonexistent with T6 15w-40/ AR9100, wear metals were also better. Not sure what to think about the fuel dilution, though.

Switched to Schaeffer’s Durability Advantage 15w-40 at this last oil change. Typewriter noise with the Schaeffer’s is louder than with any other oil but it instantly bumped up my mileage by about 1.5 mpg (I had been averaging an underwhelming 16 with a 75/25 mix of highway and towing and am now getting about 17.5). I plan to stick with the Schaeffer’s for now, will follow up with those UOAs.

Looks like half my previous silicon reading is probably related to an additive in the Triax

I’m not a chemist so is the silicon in the triax a possible issue for any reason ?
In this instant it's not a cause for concern but will artificially increase your Silicon content in the UOA. In this instance, it is probably just one of many additives used as an anti-foaming agent. Found an older thread where someone actually emailed Triax about silicon and this was their response.

My latest analysis and nothing to exciting. I've been trying Amsoil HD 5w40 with pretty good results. The additive package resembles Rotella T6.

Trying Triax 5w40 supreme next. May switch to 15w40 at some point due to how badly the 6.7 PS shears the oil down.

Probably No need unless you just want to. Ran Triax in a 6.0 powerstroke for years and nothing sheers oils as bad as a heui HPO system and still got 6-7k miles out of it consistently there.

However I'm always down for the science experiment.
