I had no idea about this on the lugnuts. That's pretty insane. I recall using an impact socket and a BFH to get the locking style lugnuts off for a few people when they had lost their keys and had flat tires on the trail but never thought you would need to do it on stock lugnuts because they're "swollen."

Gorilla it is. My Ram had cheap lugnuts too but they just deformed the threads (likely when the factory torqued them) so replaced them with shiny black ones too and never had another problem.
