I am considering getting a 3rd key fob. From what I read, if you lose one, you cannot program a new one yourself. I found a few folks selling OEM fobs for under $70 so I thought I would get one to have a backup, since I seem to lose, drown, smash or somehow ruin things in my pockets.

Has anyone actually programmed a new, blank fob? I found the following instructions on one of the vendor's sites and wondering if I was going to have success with the process.

Step-By-Step How To Programming Instructions

Confirm First Programmed Smart Key – Step 1

PLACE the first programmed smart key in the backup slot in the center console.

The key ring MUST be at the top with the buttons facing toward the rear of the vehicle.

Confirm First Programmed Smart Key – Step 2

PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle.

Confirm First Programmed Smart Key – Step 3

WAIT 5 seconds and PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle AGAIN.

Confirm First Programmed Smart Key – Step 4

REMOVE the first programmed key from the center console.

Confirm Second Programmed Smart Key – Step 1

Within 10 seconds, PLACE the second programmed smart key in the backup slot in the center console.

Confirm Second Programmed Smart Key – Step 2

PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle.

Confirm Second Programmed Smart Key – Step 3

WAIT 5 seconds and PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle AGAIN.

Confirm Second Programmed Smart Key – Step 4

REMOVE the second programmed key from the center console.

Program New Smart Key – Step 1

WAIT 5 seconds and PLACE the NEW un-programmed smart key in the backup slot in the center console.

Program New Smart Key – Step 2

PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle.

Program New Smart Key – Step 3

WAIT 5 seconds and PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle AGAIN.

Test Remotes

TEST all remotes. Programming is complete.

Important:

Verify the following prior to following these instructions:

Your vehicle is equipped with keyless entry, and

You have a key fob remote that is compatible with your vehicle.

You MUST have 2 working smart keys (keys that start your vehicle) in order to perform this programming procedure without the assistance of a professional.

A MAXIMUM of 4 smart keys can be programmed to your vehicle. If you’ve had 4 programmed in the past, seek the assistance of a professional programmer.

Ensure that the vehicle is OFF prior to beginning this procedure. CLOSE all doors prior to beginning this procedure.

You MUST perform ALL steps within 30 seconds of starting the programming procedure.

You MUST wait 60 seconds before repeating the procedure after an unsuccessful attempt.

Note: If your vehicle cannot enter programming mode, then you cannot program any remote. This indicates either no keyless entry installed on the vehicle or a defective keyless entry receiver module.

I programmed a 3rd key and that looks like what I did. I can’t remember what the exact directions I followed but the last couple steps with the new key weren’t quite right. I think I had to hold the start button for 5 seconds or press it twice. I can’t remember exactly but it works.

You aren’t doing it right then. It worked with my 21. It’s the last step that I had to try different ways. Make sure you are using the correct slot too. It’s the slot on the left under the storage not the one on the right under the cup holder.

try this video it’s the one I followed
 
i have tried with with for the Tremor and 2018 Ford edge zero issue and its hard to make a 2nd key dealer has to but you can make a 3rd key so i also have a extra just in case if i lose one and need to make another key
 
Got back into town from Lubbock, TX today, and the fob was here. I followed this Youtube video and it worked perfectly on the first try!

Sounds like great insurance just in case. Think this will be one of my next items to tackle for the Tremor. ?

Edit: I found what I think is a great source on line. The description indicates these are brand new and manufactured by the Ford supplier which is STRATTEC. They have a very strong warranty as well. Item was cheapest I could find on line at $64.95 and that included shipping and they did not charge sales tax. You can also buy the pop out key blank by itself if you want an extra.

Got my OEM fob from Northcoast Keyless. It's identical to the fobs that came from the factory, with battery installed - $64.94 including shipping and no sales tax.

The instructions they provide have a slight error in steps 10 and 11 for the 2021 Super Duty. I have attached the instructions below with a modification for those steps in yellow print. When done according to this it works perfectly.

You will know your truck is in "key program mode" when the second fob is connected to the truck and your vehicle key code comes up on the instrument screen, step 7. At this point the new fob can be programmed which is step 9. You will know the new fob programs if the door locks cycle while you are holding the start button down.

Hope this helps anyone that decides to add an extra fob to their truck.

Note: If programming fails at end of process, wait at least 60 seconds to retry the program process.
You can only program a total of 4 key fobs to the system.

Key Fob Programming:

1 - Confirm First Programmed Smart Key

(Edit 07/29/23: I have programed key fobs successfully in all positions in the program slot. Just put the FOB in the program slot the way it is designed to fit. If it doesn't program, you probably messed up the timing of the sequence. Wait 5 minutes and try again. Some videos on YouTube say you must remove the Key blank before programming. This is not necessary.)

2 - Confirm First Programmed Smart Key

PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle.

3 - Confirm First Programmed Smart Key

WAIT 5 seconds and PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle AGAIN.

4 - Confirm First Programmed Smart Key

REMOVE the first programmed key from the center console.

5 - Confirm Second Programmed Smart Key

Within 10 seconds, PLACE the second programmed smart key in the backup slot in the center console.

6 - Confirm Second Programmed Smart Key

PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle.

7 - Confirm Second Programmed Smart Key

WAIT 5 seconds and PRESS the START/STOP button on the vehicle AGAIN.
Confirmation on the instrument screen when this step completes (key code on screen).

8 - Confirm Second Programmed Smart Key

REMOVE the second programmed key from the center console.

9 - Program New Smart Key

WAIT 5 seconds and PLACE the NEW un-programmed smart key in the backup slot in the center console.

10 - Program New Smart Key

PRESS the START/STOP button and HOLD till door locks cycle. Door locks cycle indicates fob has been added to the system.

TEST all remotes. Programming is complete.

And just did mine today. Instructions worked a charm! Thanks, @RedZilla!

Though obviously I was messing them up at first. Didn't work for the first few attempts, but guaranteed that was something I was doing wrong. :ROFLMAO:

Just programmed my 3rd key fob today. It took a few tries. Here is what was tripping me up...you have 30 seconds to accomplish the entire procedure! Once I did it a bit more quickly, it worked perfectly!
 
The updated sequence worked perfectly for me. The only tripping point was which way to put the key in the slot. It will only fit in one rotation, but is it buttons up or down? Buttons up worked for me.
 
Has anyone tried this with a 2022? Only saw 2021’s listed so far in the thread. Assume it would be compatible, but listing above shows 17-21 year models.

From above, I did! Though I just realized I never called out in my post that my truck is a 22MY. You're good to go. :)
