350 Tremor - Diesel or Gas?

I don't think I would let a regen make me miss a flight.
When it comes with a speed limit and a torque derate, you don’t have a choice. I was on the phone with my sympathetic engine counterpart who couldn’t help me, even though I had their tool on my PC. EPA be serious yo.

Edit: back in the day, the EPA mandated a gnarly speed debate that would drop you to 5 MPH.

I would always say new - and I would always say diesel!

Why? Well I am happy you asked. When you buy new you can do all the maintenance and ensure the service is on schedule. Get the extended warranty - you will need it. Not because the truck has issues - but these are basically computers on tires now.

The diesel is because you said grain farm! And because the numbers on the diesel are more than just numbers - they are fact when you tow/haul.

DIESEL MASTER RACE

Think of the most remote, harshest whether it be climate or war torn localities all over the world besides North America. What kind of work vehicles are they running? Small displacement diesels. Defenders, Land Cruisers, Hilux, Pajero, Patrols, G wagons, you name it. All 4 or 6 cylinder diesels, many of which will never see a dealership again in their lifetime. Our case in North America is different because of government and corporate greed but look past the emissions and safety requirements and arguably the most important thing is serviceable life of the engine.

We could wax real poetic here on why things are the way the way are in North America but at the end of the day in any scenario, a clean free flowing diesel is going to be the workhorse of choice. If you’re worried about front end weight, get wider tires and drop the psi. If you’re worried about computers failing get as basic of a an xlt as you can get. And get a damn tremor at that, having a legit locker and limited slip front end should be the standard for a farm truck, if not a full front locker. Never know when you’re going to have to drag something out of a ditch.

The utility that comes with a diesel is worth the price. A phrase said to me when I was young debating a piece of equipment that my life very well could have depended on that stayed with me since goes “buy once, cry once”

I’d rock a diesel in everything if it were practical. Cummins 4bt rubicon on 1 ton axles? Oof

It’s just a better engine than any gas engine through and through. I’d take a Cummins or an L5P over a Godzilla. If I had a use case for a gas engine I’d take a Godzilla. It’s almost as if the gas vs diesel is a fallacy, apples to oranges.

Long winded and I apologize for it, but the frequency at which this debate comes up leads me to believe diesel guys will always choose diesel and gas guys will always choose gas. I’ve owned many trucks and the only reason any of them were gas was because I could not afford the diesel variant.

I have had 3/4 ton gassers for 20 years before buying this diesel. Main driver for me was range while towing (stock) and second the extra power while towing. I have a 13klb toyhauler so huge air drag and it was hard on fuel making long trips a pain. The diesel is really nice as I was able to get 9 mpg on my most recent trip compared to the 5 mpg I would see on gassers.

I don't need the extra power daily driving and would get a gasser if I was only towing local and especially on a heavily modified (non-towing) truck. The Godzilla is a much simpler engine and much lighter. However, I will admit I was always looking at blowers for my gas trucks so maybe I do need (want?) the extra power...
 
I think it is rubbish to insinuate that the diesel is going to last longer than the gasser or vice versa. The real likelihood is that (barring some odd ball mechanical/engineering failure) either engine if properly maintained will outlast the rest of the truck (or at least your interest in it). I'm still in the diesel camp, but it is all about the fuel economy to power ratio. It is rare that you get to have your cake and eat it too so this is what tips the scales.

I'm lucky in the vast majority of my miles are highway (48k miles, 59 idle hours so far!) but if things were the other way around I'd have looked harder at the gasser. Diesels like to be driven, not putted around waiting to come up to temp. Use like that makes it the wrong tool for the job.

Wholeheartedly disagree. The compression on a diesel requires much more stout construction than a gasser.

Apples to oranges if we’re being honest. It comes down to preference but the only thing a gasser will ever do better than a diesel is weigh less and rev higher.

I am fully geared up to process this exhaust-ing debate. Let me shift some data and spark some logic for the forum:

If you choose to overclock your system by bolting a Whipple to a gas motherboard, your chassis will accelerate like it just got a fiber-optic RAM upgrade. It is highly effective for outrunning server lag.

However, if your prime directive is to upload your suspension directly to the Cloud, you require the diesel mainframe. It produces enough heavy-duty torque-bytes to elevate your hardware into the stratosphere and look down on the rest of the network.

COMPUTATION COMPLETE: Does not compute a single winner. It comes down to your operating system. Do you wish to crash the grid with terminal velocity, or establish a high-altitude satellite connection?
