I did a basic search and realize there are several mounts to hold a tablet (specifically -- do not care about holding a cell phone) using the dashboard.
I also realize you tend to loose that cubby space when you bolt on the mount which I tend to use a lot -- bummer.
After this weekends trail run with some of the forum members, @TonyJ had the standard mount to hold his Android tablet which led us through the trail versus me having to look at my cell phone every 3 minutes to make sure we stayed on the main trail path. This I really liked this a lot.
On top of that, I know that I could benefit from having a tablet for work purposes if I need to look at one of our AutoCAD survey files when I am out in the field and don't necessarily want to open my laptop for 32 seconds to look at a coordinate point file or pull data sheets from Survey Data sites, etc. Or, at times it's just nice to be able to open the our survey drawing file in a bigger screen than the standard phone size, if I am walking a parcel of land that we previously surveyed and we have to perform some sort of an update survey on the land. Of course, I can always print or plot standard size maps for the field but then again, being able to look at a screen can sometimes be simply much more practical (don't get me started on if its windy and I am having to hold open a 24" x 36" sheet of paper to look at bearings and distances).
Which leads me to my next question:
Can you run/operate apps such as OnX from your phone to your infotainment center screen? If so, this *might* omit the detached tablet entirely.
Also, I'd be curious if you could project an AutoCAD file on the infotainment screen as well?
Ultimately, that would be ideal but I don't particularly like having my phone hooked up to my truck. As a matter of fact, I just don't have it synched up.
It's one thing if you're alone in your rig at all times but with other people or crew members in your truck, I don't always want the truck to display my text message, e-mails, phone calls in the center screen for everyone to look at reason why I have never synched my phone where I see that most members have it synched automatically to their rigs.
Also, I am in the out of the truck a lot and I would tend to think that would be a hassle having the phone connect when I am in or nearby the vehicle, then disconnect every 7 minutes as I am walking out and about.
Simply said, I would not want to have to resort to this which is why I am really resorting to the seperate tablet option, plus I can detach it and walk around with it as needed.
The tablet must be Android versus Apple for compatibility purposes with AutoCAD program.
I do have the 12" screen for the infotainment center, for whatever that's worth.
Please show off your mounts, perferably with a tablet of some sort so that I can start to pick what I want to go with.
