Safety Chain Hook-ups - Piling On

41,250 pound break strength has me very interested. How wide is the opening and do they go through the opening? fairly easy to put on?

Working load is 9,500#. Same as the harbor freight model.

I like shackles. Luckily I have access high quality and highly rated shackles and straps at work. We run a 400MT crane.

Whatever you go with, if it doesn't come with a load rating certificate from a reputable source, it is just a paperweight.

If you're going with shackles you can't go wrong with Crosby. They make all sorts of rigging gear and they send a certificate with every shackle. see a prior post of mine for a picture of the cert

Indeed.

Damn! Crosby is legit, but $$$...seems like more for rigging. I know shackles are mainly used for rigging but man...are people going to be willing to buy those? I figure people would likely go with hammer locks vs paying for that. I saw 222$ per shackle.

I've always purchased Crosby shackles and have never paid that much. They do have massive ones for industrial use that are pricey but i recently got a 7/8" screw pin shackle for 40 bucks. 6 1/2 ton WLL. I use that one with my hitchlink 3.0 from factor 55. Factor 55 sells crosby shackles and has the smaller more traditional 3/4" versions. worth the extra money since it's a life and death item. Forget the 5 dollar harbor freight crap.

100% agree, i wouldn't buy harbor freight, but like others have said most of the stuff anyway is made in china. Crosby sounds legit, just didn't know where to buy them. Factor 55, gotcha.

EDIT: whoa they have some good stuff...

you can also find them at times on amazon. especially if you want the larger 7/8 shackle with a 1" pin but since we're talking trailer safety chain use, the standard 3/4 one will be perfect

Yea. Safety isn't cheap. We pay thousands for individual shackles.

Buy once, cry once. Haha

I get it when the company buys it after all we have cranes and lifting equipment where I work as well, but will people here be willing to pay. The ones on Factor 55 are quite affordable albeit still 5x the price of harbor freight, but we're talking 33$ per shackle so...

Yep, buy once, cry once...doing that now on my commuter focus ST with fun parts and bits.

I posted earlier but I buy the CM shackles from Fastenal. Maybe a tad more expensive than Crosby but their safety factors I believe are higher 6:1 and their WLL is higher for comparative sizes. I haven't looked at all the Crosby stuff I just know this list is pretty complete and nice:

I hear ya. Sucks to pay those prices as an individual. I try to find the best compromise, so I use them whenever I can. Lifted out a few tractors from ditches, etc. Crosby 1" rated for 12T are my choice. About $100 each.

I look at it as 2 nights at a restaurant for years and years of not worrying about that 1 tiny aspect of my setup.

I spend more on whiskey and cigars. Haha

*edit to add: crosby shackles qre 6:1 design factor

3/4" with 7/8" screw pin @ $38.49.

6.5t WLL and 6:1 design factor so breaking strength is 78,000 lbs. That'll do!
