This baby runs on rails!

I saw one of these on a flat bed going down I91 two weeks ago. Not sure there was if there was a railroad show around or something - but the trucks were from NY.

That was most likely someone returning from the Vermont Rail System excursion. It was a 200 mile round trip along the Connecticut River to the Canadian border and back. Next weekend we’re on the Snowflake run - a 140 mile run starting in Concord, NH.

It is a total blast running these motorcars. If anyone‘s interested you can find out more about them and the national organization that coordinates these excursions here:

That’s super cool! Don’t they call those “Putt Putt’s”? People take those all over the country for organized rail rides. They used to cone to Virginia City NV when I worked there to ride the V&T rails. I think that would be great fun!

Getting track authority is all arranged through NARCOA or is affiliated organizations such as NEREX. It’s brilliantly coordinated and excursions have full safety briefings every morning before we set off Including updates from the railroad on current rail conditions. As you know it can be very dangerous running on active rail so they take it very seriously. That said the organization‘s safety record is excellent.

It’s an amazing experience to run these cars - one I highly recommend trying especially if you have even a passing interest in trains. Compared to our trucks, it’s not terribly expensive to get in to. There are cars listed for sale all the time on the NARCOA site.

There are cars from every decade from the 40’s to the late 80’s. “Putt putts” as they are affectionately known, refer to the older single cylinder 2-stroke cars made by a company called Fairmont. You can guess what kind of sound they make when running.

The mud truck, code named “the calico” by the wife. 1986 F-250, Dana 60 king pin high pinion front axle, 10.25” semi floating Lincoln locked rear axle, 40” interco boggers, 513ci BB (started life out as a 1972 429ci), aluminum heads, stainless steel full roller rockers, probe forged flat top pistons, eagle forged stroker crank, eagle forged H-beam rods, crower beast stage 3 cam, Edelbrock 850 carb, 4-speed manual, Mad-dog full length fender well exit headers, glass packs, 5” stacks, 2-meter ham radio, 40,000 lb PTO winch in bed. Way to much time and money for how it looks…. But performs really well when I get to use it.

How’s that new NSX? I’m looking at it and the supra as my next daily.

NSX is fantastic. Performance is beyond anything short of a Ferrari/Lambo/911 Turbo, but still every-day drivable. The dynamic drive modes range from boring sedan to holy shit. The main sacrifice is cargo space - it’s not made for Costco runs. 2022 will be the last year of production - don’t miss out

So far (12k mikes) it’s been rock solid with oil changes being the only maintenance. We did change the tires from the factory Continentals to Michelins.

2009 Volvo XC70 T6 Polestar, 1951 Chevy 3100, 1987 Dodge W150, and a 1974 CB750 K4 that just resurfaced after wrecking it 20 years ago. None are stock 'cept the Honda.

...and the Tremor will complete the Big Three truck trifecta for me.
