You formatted it to exFAT, but left it as GPT. Right-clicking and hitting 'Format' in Windows isn't enough. Modern Windows defaults to a GPT (GUID Partition Table) scheme for newer, larger drives. SYNC cannot read GPT; it strictly requires MBR (Master Boot Record). If the drive is GPT, SYNC can't see the data partition at all, so it just defaults to treating it like a dumb charging device. You need to open Windows Disk Management, delete the volume, convert the disk to MBR, and then format it as exFAT.OK. Brand new 3.2 gen 2 drive formatted in exFat. Survey says....
"USB Charge Only" when I plug it into the truck.
Any other genius ides?
Another problem is you're probably plugging it into plugged into a charge-only port. Only the front USB ports in the media bin (under the radio) have data lines wired to the APIM (the SYNC computer). If you are plugging that drive into the center console or the rear seat ports, they will physically only ever provide power.
And then there's the the 3.2 Gen 2 power draw. A high-performance 3.2 Gen 2 drive pulls more milliamps than older tech. The Ford USB hubs are notoriously sensitive to voltage drops. If the drive demands more power than the hub is rated to deliver, the module protects itself by dropping the data handshake and defaulting to 'charge only.'
Convert the partition table to MBR, make sure you are in the front media bin, and you'll be good to go. The truck will read the drive, index it once, and you'll have your FLAC audio.
