Help please with a weight distributing hitch? Local dealer pissed me off so I want to buy online.

Yes, I have the boss hitch.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m see what you mean - the 16k model has the sweet spot on the ideal tongue weight for the torsion to work (1000 to 1700 lbs). While I would like to just move to something with a 3” shank to get rid of the reducer, the torsion flex looks l like a strong contender for me.

I have the Gen-Y setup with the 14k equilizer hitch that was used for a 2017 Open Range 310BHS (1100-1200lb tongue) and ~11k lbs. This was a great setup, only thing was is it is the setup is on the heavy side. Haven't used it in a while as it's been sitting in storage since my 310 was totaled in the ice storm in 2021 and got replaced with a 5th wheel, but really helped the ride with a heavy tongue load.

Installed the hitch tonight, the tension can be a bitch. Here's how it looks:

I have this exact hitch. I don't use it anymore since I traded to a fifth wheel.

I used to use a 3/4" drive ratchet with a 1" socket to tighten and loosen the chains. Especially with loosening when you get over center with the ratchet it can just free spin instead of trying to break your arm.

The thing I like most was being able to adjust the tension on it depending on how heavy the trailer was loaded. If the load was heavier just take it up another link on the chains to keep the springs preloaded higher.

Is the trailer jack off the block? Hard to tell... If so, the truck attitude looks much better in the front. I think you'll notice an improvement.

Yeah, it is off the block. I agree, the angle of everything is MUCH better.

It does look much better. The trailer looks like you could raise the ball up a bit but that may just be the photo. Take it out to someplace level and take measurements to be sure.

Look forward to hearing your feedback once you take it for a tow!

Headed to Southwick MXGP in Massachusetts in 2 weeks! (10 hours round trip ) Then winterize immediately after cause it's getting cold!

I think you can get more preload and reduce the squat more. You should be able to go to the halfway point on the chain. If it is hard to tighten, raise the trailer with the jack to take the load off the chains.

Fast away e2 is great. That said our trailer must pull very well. 8k loaded lance 2185 and unless we are going on 70 mph+ highways I do not even put the bars on. Truck is 24 6.7.

Review after my first ~5 hour tow on the highway to Southwick, MA for dirtbike racing..

AWESOME! So much better! Almost completely eliminated my sway issues!! I am very happy with the setup. It is a little bit off a pain to hook and unhook the camper, but it is do-able.

One benefit of the 6.7 is the extra ~800lbs on the front end of the truck is beneficial for towing stability. :p

So glad to hear this! The hook/unhook process will get easier each time you do it...

What’s the rule of thumb wisdom on how much is acceptable (percentage?) of weight loss on the front axle if not using WDH to restore weight back to the front?

In my “do I really want to mess with the WDH anymore” journey I took my stuff across CAT scales this weekend. I see the front axle drop from about 4900 lbs to 4400 lbs - a 500 loss (round numbers). At first I was thinking no way that’s gonna work safety-wise, but then really looking at the numbers thats just ~10%. I measured the front end rise at only 1/8”, so the 500lb loss was surprising to me. I don’t feel like the front is floaty or anything in the drives I’ve taken so far.

The 1/8" is a bit surprising, but the springs for the 6.7 are stiffer. On my truck I lose about 600lbs on the front axle and it definitely comes up more than that (I'll have to look it up). Some info from my CAT scale visit here:

I am thinking a good target would be ending up with the same percentage of rated load on the front and rear axles. Here is a link to a spreadsheet I created that helps figure out how to do that. From that for example, it looks like at 1100 lb or above of tongue one should start looking at WD for a 6.7 Tremor. That is based on my Tremor and how I might be otherwise loaded. Different configurations will be different.
